3 Accounting policies and systemsThe MoF is currently revising the chart of accounts for the LGAs to make them moreadaptable and to harmonise them with the central government. The new chart ofaccounts for the LGAs will therefore comprise of four segments and 28 digits. Thischange has been necessitated due to the fact that from 1 July 2006, all LGAsbudgets will need to be prepared and presented in line with the MKUKUTAformat.However, until the above change has been effected, LGAs continue to use theexisting chart of accounts which is illustrated in Figure 3.2 below, comprising foursegments and 19 digits.This document will need to be updated to reflect approved amendments to the LGAsnew chart of account. IFMS Operators must capture timely, accurateand complete transactions onto the system and must ensure that:• All transaction data is entered onto the system on a daily basis. Nobacklogs should be allowed to build up. Accounts should be balanced daily• Bank reconciliations are undertaken, at the very least, on a monthly basisGovernment of the United Republic of Tanzania21
