Despite the 12-19 recordlast season, Union headmen’s basketball coach KellyCombs is optimistic aboutthe 2007-08 version of theBulldogs with a young squadthat is fi lled with experienceand talent.Combs returns threeseniors, Ryne Bretz (Carlisle,Ky.), Chris Stunson (Richmond,Ky.) and Kevin Jones (Radcliff,Ky.) along with All-AppalachianAthletic ConferenceFreshman Team selection,Aaron Dunaway (Lexington,Ky.) from last year’s squadthat fi nished with a 4-3record to end the regularseason.Dunaway, a 6-foot-3 guard,averaged 14 points pergame last season and is theteam’s top returning scorer.He poured in a career-high30 points against Pikeville(Ky.) College, which includedsix three pointers, and had29 points versus conferencefoe Bluefi eld (Va.) College.Dunaway also averaged 1.8three-point baskets percontest en route to a 38.4percentage behind thethree-point line.Combs commented onhow Dunaway worked overthe summer on his defenseand going to the basket.Dunaway should bring more2007-08 BULLDOG PREVIEWversatility to his scoring abilitythis season.The next three top returningscorers is the trio ofseniors. Stunson averaged 9.1points over 30 games whileBretz and Jones averaged8.2 and 6.2 points per game,respectively.Stunson also made hispresence known on thedefensive side of the ballas he earned a spot on theAll-AAC defensive teamfrom his guard position forthe second year in a row. The6-foot-2 Stunson collected27 steals over the year andaveraged 2.9 rebounds ineach game. He also dishedout a total of 74 assists tolead the team.“He is our defensive stopper,”Combs said. The Bulldogcoach added that Stunsonwill be counted on heavilythis season for his leadershipgiven that he has startednearly every game he hasplayed in.Bretz, another 6-foot-3guard, scored in doubledigits in 14 games includinga stretch of seven in a rowwith a season-high 20 pointsversus Montreat (N.C.) College.“He has started off and onin his fi rst three seasons and isa versatile player that playsbigger because of his athleticability,” Combs said of Bretz.Jones, the 6-foot-5 forward,ranked second onlast year’s team with 4.24rebounds per game whileonly playing in 16 minutesper game. 2007-08 BULLDOG PREVIEWshooting performance whichincluded a perfect two-oftwofrom behind the threepointline.“Jones had a great summerand his game has blossomed,”Combs said. “He has a tremendousamount of confi -dence in his skills and ability.”Brian Kirk (Augusta, Ga.)also will see time in theUnion backcourt at the pointguard position. He accountedfor 30 steals to lead the Bulldogswith 1.1 per game. Kirkalso averaged 5.7 points pergame, scoring a season-high15 points against King (Tenn.)College.“Kirk is a hard nose andtough player,” Combs said,“and he has worked hard tobecome our point guard.”The frontcourt will beyoung as four sophomoreswill battle for starting spotsthis season.Jeff Hughes (Jeffersontown,Ky.) averaged 4.7 points andfi nished strong last seasonwhich included a 20-pointoutburst against Montreatin the AAC Tournament. Healso poured in 17 points versusBryan (Tenn.) College.Anthony Coote (Georgetown,Ky.) is the leadingscorer out of the group. Heaveraged 4.97 points pergame with 2.9 rebounds in 31games. Hubertus von Heydenwww.ucbulldogs.com(Neulengbach, Austria) added1.6 points and two reboundsper game last season.Combs is expecting bothCoote and von Heyden toprovide a strong presencein the post as they gainedstrength and confi dence duringthe offseason.Brett Miller (Carrolton,Ky.) grabbed 2.9 reboundsand averaged 2.7 pointsper game. However, Millersuffered a knee injury againstUVa-Wise in the fi nal regularseasoncontest.Combs is excited aboutthe newcomers at the postposition with Josh Hurd (Independence,Ky.), Bill Davis(Harrodsburg, Ky.) and JamesJohnson (Lexington, Ky.).He looks for an immediateimpact from the trio.Mike Hester (Independence,Ky.) will also providedepth at the point guardposition. Combs expects himto bring a scoring threat andquick passes to the Bulldogs.The AAC coaches predictedthat Union will fi nish sixththis season, the same placethe team fi nished in 2006-07.Last season, Union completedconference play witha 6-12 record and suffered afi rst-round tournament lossagainst Montreat.The season starts againstAlice Lloyd (Ky.) Collegeinside Robsion Arena on Nov.6 and is scheduled for a 7:30p.m. tipoff. The Bulldogs willplay their fi rst AAC conteston Nov. 27 versus the visitorsfrom King, the pre-seasonfavorite for the conferencetitle.The season runs throughFebruary with the AACTournament scheduled to beginon Feb. 27 in Bristol, Tenn.5
