Despite the 12-19 recordlast season, Union headmen’s basketball coach KellyCombs is optimistic aboutthe 2007-08 version <strong>of</strong> theBulldogs with a young squadthat is fi lled with experienceand talent.Combs returns threeseniors, Ryne Bretz (Carlisle,Ky.), Chris Stunson (Richmond,Ky.) and Kevin Jones (Radcliff,Ky.) along with All-AppalachianAthletic ConferenceFreshman Team selection,Aaron Dunaway (Lexington,Ky.) from last year’s squadthat fi nished with a 4-3record to end the regularseason.Dunaway, a 6-foot-3 guard,averaged 14 points pergame last season and is theteam’s top returning scorer.He poured in a career-high30 points against Pikeville(Ky.) College, which includedsix three pointers, and had29 points versus conferencefoe Bluefi eld (Va.) College.Dunaway also averaged 1.8three-point baskets percontest en route to a 38.4percentage behind thethree-point line.Combs commented onhow Dunaway worked overthe summer on his defenseand going to the basket.Dunaway should bring more2007-08 BULLDOG PREVIEWversatility to his scoring abilitythis season.The next three top returningscorers is the trio <strong>of</strong>seniors. Stunson averaged 9.1points over 30 games whileBretz and Jones averaged8.2 and 6.2 points per game,respectively.Stunson also made hispresence known on thedefensive side <strong>of</strong> the ballas he earned a spot on theAll-AAC defensive teamfrom his guard position forthe second year in a row. The6-foot-2 Stunson collected27 steals over the year andaveraged 2.9 rebounds ineach game. He also dishedout a total <strong>of</strong> 74 assists tolead the team.“He is our defensive stopper,”Combs said. The Bulldogcoach added that Stunsonwill be counted on heavilythis season for his leadershipgiven that he has startednearly every game he hasplayed in.Bretz, another 6-foot-3guard, scored in doubledigits in 14 games includinga stretch <strong>of</strong> seven in a rowwith a season-high 20 pointsversus Montreat (N.C.) College.“He has started <strong>of</strong>f and onin his fi rst three seasons and isa versatile player that playsbigger because <strong>of</strong> his athleticability,” Combs said <strong>of</strong> Bretz.Jones, the 6-foot-5 forward,ranked second onlast year’s team with 4.24rebounds per game whileonly playing in 16 minutesper game.
