The 2006-07 season was a rollercoasteraffair for Union College men’sbasketball team.Last season was one where the Bulldogswere trying to fi nd their grooveand could not exactly get the right fi tas the team had to rely on youth duringmuch of the season as the team fi nished12-19 overall and 6-14 in the AppalachianAthletic Conference.Twenty-one different players sawtime on the court with 14 getting tostart at least one game during the year.Of those 21 who played, 13 weresophomores or freshmen, six werejuniors and two were seniors.The Bulldogs reeled off three consecutivevictories to start the season 3-0and owned a 5-2 record heading intoAppalachian Athletic Conference play.But then, things took a turn for theworse.Union dropped its fi rst six conferencegames, including a 91-85 overtime,heartbreaker to Tennessee WesleyanCollege. Overall, the Bulldogs lost 10 of11 games during that stretch to fall to6-12 overall and 0-6 in the conference.Behind the play of freshman AaronDunaway and junior Chris Stunson, Unionpicked up back-to-back AAC victories.Dunaway posted game-highs in points(26) and rebounds (six) in a 78-72 homewin over Milligan (Tenn.) College on Jan.9, while Stunson scored 23 points andgrabbed six boards in leading Union toan 87-79 win at Bryan (Tenn.) College onJan. 13.However, the inconsistency returnedas the Bulldogs dropped fi ve of theirnext six games, an 81-74 home winover Covenant (Ga.) serving as the lonebright spot during the stretch. But asthe regular-season came to a close,2006-07 SEASON IN REVIEWUnion rallied by winning three of itsfi nal four contests, securing the sixthseed for the Appalachian AthleticConference Tournament.In the conference tournament, No. 3Montreat (N.C.) College proved to betoo much for Union as it recorded an87-70 decision. The 17-point defeatmarks the third time this season Unionsuffered a double-digit to Montreat. OnDec. 2, the Cavaliers won 80-66 in Barbourvillebefore defeating the Bulldogs85-66 at home on Jan. 23. Freshman JeffHughes paced the Bulldogs with 20points.Eight different players led Unionin scoring during the year, while ninedifferent players paced the team inrebounding.Although the Bulldogs did not haveanyone make the All-Conference Team,Dunaway was tabbed for the All-FreshmanTeam and Stunson made the All-Defensive Team for the second seasonin a row.Dunaway led the team with a 14.0point-per-game average to go alongwith his 59 assists and 18 steals. Healso averaged 3.65 rebounds per game.Stunson, meanwhile, posted 9.13 pointsand 2.87 rebounds per game and ledthe team with 74 assists and 27 steals.Junior Ryne Bretz had his best seasonto date as he posted 8.19 points and3.45 rebounds per game to go alongwith his 39 assists, team-high 25 blocksand 22 steals.
