THIS IS UNION!In 1879 a group of progressivecitizens followed the prompting ofAbraham H. Harritt, a salesman ofschool desks, and James T. Gibson, the owner of a general-merchandisestore, to establish a college in theBarbourville community. W.W.Sawyers and James D. Black met inthe offi ce of Judge J.H. Tinsley andformed a stock company to launchUnion College.Black, who later served aspresident of Union from 1910-12 and later served as governorof Kentucky, is given credit forhaving named the school “Union.”The institution it would serveCentennial Hallas a unifying infl uence for thecommunity regardless of churchaffi liation or political differences. The Articles of Incorporation were drawn up on Oct. 18, 1879,and provided for the issuance of $20,000 worth of capital stock. The London Echo of Dec. 12,1879, carrying its fi rst announcement of Union, listed the corporation as being “designed to fi ll along-felt want in eastern Kentucky, eastern Tennessee and western Virginia.”Union was operated under local leadership for the fi rst few years, but began to experiencesevere fi nancial struggles. On Oct. 25, 1886, the property was “cried off” to Green Elliott, whopurchased it for Dr. Daniel Stevenson for the sum of $4,425 with Mrs. Mahala Dowis furnishing thefunds. The renowned Kentucky educator had been authorized to attend the sale by the Board ofEducation of the Kentucky Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church.Union’s athletic mascot, the English Bulldog, was introduced during the fall of 1925. The breed, whose ancestors were developed in Britain before the 13th century from the British mastiff andother breeds, was used for bullbaiting and dogfi ghting until these sports were outlawed in the19th century. In 1967, the Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity of Union College purchased the fi rst livingmascot named Mack. He was presented at the Homecoming basketball game that same year. Aregistered English Bulldog, Mack died in 1971. His remains are buried in an area adjacent to Union’scurrent baseball complex.During the past seven years, Union College began a major campus renovation and buildingproject. Plans included the creation of new student housing, expanded academic and athleticcenters, and the upgrade of existing facilities. Projects completed were the construction of theStewart-Lyttle Apartments, Sharp Academic Center, Black Technology Center and the renovationof Speed Hall. Union’s athletic facilities have also received facelifts as well. A new brick backstoperected in 2001 at Sanders Field at Jerry W. Carey Baseball Stadium, while a new outfi eld fencewas installed in 2007. Robsion Arena recently had the fl oor repainted, new scoreboards installedas well as new lights, roof and gutters. Two new tennis courts were constructed, while theexisting four were resurfaced, and a new press box was constructed at Burch/Nau Field (football)in 2003. Recently, new locker rooms were built for the football team, while the locker rooms forvolleyball and women’s basketball have been expanded and refurbished. In 2007, synthetic sportsturf was installed at Burch/Nau Field, allowing the complex to now host football and soccergames.Union offers 26 majors in the undergraduate curriculum, which lead to a bachelor’s degree.Minors are also available in many of these programs. The 2006-07 season was a rollercoasteraffair for Union College men’sbasketball team.Last season was one where the Bulldogswere trying to fi nd their grooveand could not exactly get the right fi tas the team had to rely on youth duringmuch of the season as the team fi nished12-19 overall and 6-14 in the AppalachianAthletic Conference.Twenty-one different players sawtime on the court with 14 getting tostart at least one game during the year.Of those 21 who played, 13 weresophomores or freshmen, six werejuniors and two were seniors. The Bulldogs reeled off three consecutivevictories to start the season 3-0and owned a 5-2 record heading intoAppalachian Athletic Conference play. But then, things took a turn for theworse.Union dropped its fi rst six conferencegames, including a 91-85 overtime, heartbreaker to Tennessee WesleyanCollege. Overall, the Bulldogs lost 10 of11 games during that stretch to fall to6-12 overall and 0-6 in the conference.Behind the play of freshman AaronDunaway and junior Chris Stunson, Unionpicked up back-to-back AAC victories.Dunaway posted game-highs in points(26) and rebounds (six) in a 78-72 homewin over Milligan (Tenn.) But asthe regular-season came to a close,2006-07 SEASON IN REVIEWUnion rallied by winning three of itsfi nal four contests, securing the sixthseed for the Appalachian AthleticConference Tournament. In the conference tournament, No. 3Montreat (N.C.) College proved to betoo much for Union as it recorded an87-70 decision. The 17-point defeatmarks the third time this season Unionsuffered a double-digit to Montreat. OnDec. 2, the Cavaliers won 80-66 in Barbourvillebefore defeating the Bulldogs85-66 at home on Jan. 23. Freshman JeffHughes paced the Bulldogs with 20points.Eight different players led Unionin scoring during the year, while ninedifferent players paced the team inrebounding.Although the Bulldogs did not haveanyone make the All-Conference Team,Dunaway was tabbed for the All-FreshmanTeam and Stunson made the All-Defensive Team for the second seasonin a row.Dunaway led the team with a 14.0point-per-game average to go alongwith his 59 assists and 18 steals. The NAIA: A Proud Past, A Dynamic FutureIn searching for the NAIA’s placein the history of sports and highereducation, several consistencies arerevealed. Among them is the dedicationto academic achievement aboveathletic excellence. Also apparent isthe organization’s role as a trailblazerin providing equal opportunities forall student-athletes. Above all, thereis an expectation of ethical behaviorand a commitment to scholarship, sportsmanship and leadership. It is paradoxical that such a lasting, dynamic contribution to collegiatesports began with a mundane notein the fi rst recorded history of theAssociation: “The fi rst general sessionof the ‘Organizing Convention’ of theNational Association of IntercollegiateBasketball (NAIB) was held in thePhillips Hotel, Kansas City, Missouri, at10 a.m., Sunday, March 10, 1940.”But the seed from which the NAIBsprouted was planted two blocksaway at Municipal Auditorium. It was there in1937 that a men’s basketball tournament tippedoff which has become the longest continuousnational collegiate tournament in any sport.Further, out of that small-college basketballtournament, and the NAIB, grew an Associationthat now includes more than 360 colleges anduniversi ties and conducts two dozen nationalchampionship events. The tournament was the brainchild of EmilS. Liston, Dr. James Naismith, Frank Cramer, anda group of Kansas City business leaders whowanted to provide Kansas City-area fans withexciting amateur competition and to provide aframework for small colleges and universities todetermine a national basketball champion. The original eight-team tournament expandedto 32 teams in 1938 and suspended play onlyfor World War II in 1944 before 16 teamswere invited the following year and the fi eldgot back to full strength by 1946. Qualifyingtournaments became mandatory at the districtlevel in 1951.In 1948, the NAIB affi rmed its commitmentto equality by becoming the fi rst national organizationto offer intercollegiate postseasonopportunities to black student-athletes. Unprecedentedaction was taken in 1953 whenhistorically black institutions were voted intomembership.THE NAIAOne year previous to the inclusion of historicallyblack institutions, another form of expansionoccurred. In 1952, as a result of the expresseddesires of the member institutions, appropriatesteps were taken by which the NAIB wastransformed into the National Association ofIntercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), and the fi rstall-encompassing set of rules and standards wasadopted. With the Association’s new name came the additionof national championships in golf, tennis andoutdoor track and fi eld. Football, cross country, baseball and swimming and diving were addedto the championships calendar in 1956. Wrestling(1958), soccer (1959), bowling (1962-78), gymnastics(1964-84), indoor track and fi eld (1966) andmen’s volleyball (1969-80) were added later.Another significant step occurred in 1957when the Association’s headquarters movedfrom the campus of George Pepperdine Collegein Los Angeles to Kansas City to better serve themembership from a centralized location. Two major changes were made during the1970s. An extensive study was completed in1970 which paved the way for two divisionsof football. In 1997, football was consolidatedto one division again as the Football CoachesAssociation cited a narrowing gap betweenenrollment size and philosophy of the two divisions. In 1976, the men’s basketball tournamentwas moved from the confi nes of the MunicipalAuditorium to Crosby Kemper Arena, also in Kansas City, marking the fi rst timesince 1937 that the tournament hadbeen held in a different arena. The NAIA revolutionized nationalcollegiate athletics with the establishmentof athletics programs for womenon August 1, 1980. Offi cial notice onthat date followed a mail vote by themembership on May 1 that supportedbecoming the fi rst organization to offercollegiate athletics to both men andwomen. Championships for womenbegan that year with basketball, crosscountry, gymnastics, indoor and outdoortrack and fi eld, softball, tennis andvolleyball. Soccer was added in 1984,and golf was included in 1995.Another important chapter in thehistory of the NAIA unfolded in 1992when the Association voted to moveits headquarters from Kansas City toTulsa. On August 1, 1993, the NAIAopened its doors in Tulsa and began anew era. Moving with the national offi ce was theDivision I Men’s Basketball National Championshipwhich had been held in Kansas City for 56 years.During the 1993 NAIA National Convention inAtlanta, the waves of change once again washedover the Association. The membership votedto institute affi liated conference and regionalgroupings and discontinue the use of districtplay as a means of qualification for nationalchampionships.Since 1937, the NAIA has administered programsand championships in proper balance withthe overall educational experience. In 2000, theNAIA reaffirmed its purpose to enhance thecharacter-building aspects of sport. ThroughChampions of Character, the NAIA seeks tocreate an environment in which every studentathlete, coach, offi cial and spectator is committedto the true spirit of competition through fi vetenets: respect, integrity, responsibility, servantleadership and sportsmanship.Everything has come full circle. The NAIArelocated its National Offi ce in July of 2001 toOlathe, Kansas, just miles from Gardner where theidea for the small-college basketball tournamentgave rise to the NAIA. Now, nearly 65 years afterthat initial tournament, the NAIA Division I Men’sBasketball National Championship returned toMunicipal Auditorium, the arena that was hometo so many memories from 1937-74.www.ucbulldogs.com21
