Daily NewsofTorinoOlympiadMay 28/2006.A day full of surprizesArmenia new leaderTicketssold out!It seems that the rest day was veryusefull, at least for all the teamsfrom the top. If You rememberthat in round five first 5 matchesended in 2:2, today there was nosuch a result in first 14 matches! The heroes of the day were Dutch players. They defeated Russia with 2,5:1,5. It couldhave been even worse for leaders, since Grischukwas a pawn down for a long time, butfinally managed to escape in a rook endgame. The only decided game was on bordfour, where Nijboer outplayed Rublevsky ina highly tactical game. With such a resultNetherlands is now second with 17,5 points, while Russia dropped behind with half apoint less. After yesterday’s round we have a newleader! It is Armenia, who defeated Uzbekistanwith 2,5:1,5, thanks to the victory ofAkopian against Barsov, while all other gamesended in a draw.Another surprise in top matches wascreated by Belarus. They won 3:1 againsthigher rated team of Spain. Especially importantwas Aleksandrov’s win against Shirovon board number 1. They are now on 17points, together with Russia.Four other winners in top matches arehalf a point behind: Ukraine, USA, Swedenand India. While USA, Sweden and especiallyIndia are certainly very satisfied with theirresult, we are sure that Ukraine expectedmore from their match against Iran, whocontinues to surprize. Actual championsmanaged to win just one game and it was Elyanovon board three. Sweden and USA wonwith the same small result against Bulgariaand China, while India managed to casheven 3 points against Germany. After theirdisastrous start they are now sharing fifthplace already.Italian «A» team lost to Lithuania with1,5:2,5, «C» team lost with the same resultagainst Chile, while only «B» team managedto give some joy to italian fans by scoring 3,5points against Faroe Islands. The situation on the top is now: Armenia18,0 points, Netherlands 17,5, Russiaand Belarus 17,0 followed by Ukraine, USA,Sweden and India with 16,5 points. One more interesting detail is that onlytwo teams won all their matches and theseare Belarus and USA!Top pairings for round seven are: Netherlands-Armenia,Russia-Belarus, India-Ukraine and USA-Sweden.We feel somehow that today it will be areal firework on boards!More or less the same scenario was seenby women as well – 11 decided matchesfrom first 12! Two leading teams, Russia andUkraine, won with the same result 2:1. Theirvictims were Hungary and Spain. Ukrainemissed a chance at least to equalize theirnumber of points with Russia. They are nowon 14,5 and respectively 14,0 points.A surprizingly high victory (3.0) of Slovakiaagainst Lithuania brought them to thethird place with 13,5 points. It seems thatLithuanians collapsed after their short momentsof glory a couple of rounds ago.Four teams are on 13,0 points: USA, Romania,India and Bulgaria. They all wontheir matches with the same 2:1 result. Theirvictims were Mongolia, Armenia, Sloveniaand Kazakhstan. Three teams follow withhalf a point less: Hungary, China and Estonia. The only team who won all the matchesis Ukraine.Top pairings for round seven are: Slovakia-Russia,Ukraine-Romania, USA-India,Bulgaria-China and Estonia-Hungary.Today we step into the second half of thistournament and the suspense is growing up!(M.Cebalo)After the success of thewebsite, the stands atthe Chess Olympiadstart filling up Ticketsfor the parterre soldout and reprintedThe 37th edition of the Chess Olympiadis harvesting new successes everyday. With the media spotlight trained onthe event and press coverage at exceptionallevels, crowds of chess freaks butalso a public of the simply curious arepouring into the Oval. While the official site of the OrganisingCommittee continues to record anincredible number of contacts (two millionagain today, many connected live tothe games), today the stands and aboveall the parterre (gold tickets) have clockedup a record: in just a few hours thetickets available for the playing arenawere sold out.The 300 tickets made available by theorganisation to protect the silence and concentrationof the players, were not enoughto satisfy the demands of visitors.RukyToday the 37th Chess Olympiad sees the visitof the mascot Ruky to the Oval. He will betouring the various areas and will be availablefor photographs.

Interview withMichele GodenaMonRoi wirelessa big hit!Michele Godena, age 39, GM and present national champion, is the italianplayer with the highest Elo rating (2537). After today’s hard foughtgame he gave us this short interview. How many Olympiads did you take part in?I attended the last 10 Olympiads, Turin included, starting in Thessaloniki in 1988, andsince Moscow 1994 I have played in the first board. Actually today’s game has been the 100thin my Olympiads. Are Olympiads different from normal tournaments?Definitely yes. The number of participantsis extraordinarily higher, and you meet peoplefrom all over the world. You really understandwhat “Gens una sumus” means. And what about the training for this kind oftournament? This should be different too. Ideally youshould have a number of training stages with allthe team players, in order not only to work on the technical aspects, but also to improve theteam spirit. But unfortunately this has been possible only once before the event. How is the Olympiad going so far?We could have scored better, even if we have met strong teams. Personally I can be satisfiedat the moment: in the first board I have played four games, winning one and drawing three. And against Smirin (Israel, 2662) and Rozentalis (Lthuania, 2596) I probably had a betterposition with black, though their rating is higher is mine. But I am sorry for Garcia Palermo, who lost two games that were likely won. He just needs a good result to recover confidenceand shape, so to show what is his actual skill.(M. Settis)Three womenamongst the menOne of the curiosities of the Turin Chess Olympiad is the presence of womenplayers in men’s teams (men, on the other hand, may not play inwomen’s teams). Three men’s teams (Hong Kong, Bermuda and MonteCarlo) are playing women players, and in two cases the woman in questionis actually on top board. The Hong Kong team has the fifteen-year-old Anya Corke (born September 1990) on topboard. Anya is one of the strongest under-16s in the world and was overall champion (i.e.including both men and women) of Hong Kong at just 14, so becoming the second youngestnational champion of all time (the absolute youngest was none other than Capablanca whobecame champion of Cuba at the ageof just 12).On the Bermuda team we have Zuzana Kovacova on top board who in the first five gameshas clocked up 3 and half points (3 wins, a draw and a loss).Fourth board on the Monte Carlo (Monaco) team is Julia Lebel-Arias.The Open A Tournament istaking place in Turin May22-29 2006, as part of the37th Chess Olympiad Festival. The tournamentattracted the participation of 110 players. The championship is organized by the ChessOlympiad Organizing Committee, theGruppo Scacchi Torino 2006, and the ItalianChess Federation under the aegis of FIDE.Participants are using electronic PersonalChess Managers (PCM) to record gamescores. These PCMs are linked to the ProfessionalTournament Manager in order tolive broadcast tournament. The games areviewable in real time at the MonRoi WorldDatabank of Chess (WDC). Players, arbitersand spectators love it!Highly experienced tournament arbitersMichele Cordara, Domenico Fasano andGiovani D’Ingiullo implemented the leadingedge wireless technology and the verdict isunanimous: “The MonRoi system is easy toset-up and use. Spectators are thrilled withthe top quality live broadcast. The games areprojected on the white board as well.” Don’tmiss the opportunity to take part in theirBlitz tournament which will be held on June1st starting at 6pm.FM Ljubomir Ilic from Macedonia is enthusiastic:“I wrote my games for 30 yearson paper and it took just one day to switchfrom paper to an electronic scoresheet. TheMonRoi device is so easy to use and I haveaccurate and clean records of my games. After the match I can replay my game rightaway on the device. No more messy paperscoresheets!”Jianjun Zhou, MonRoi engineer said:“Our team becomes a part of the organizerteam assisting arbiters to make their tournamentsmodern and prestigious, whileproviding spectators wonderful experience. With affordable and easy to use MonRoi technologyorganizer can broadcast corporatesponsor logos, thus increasing profits andchess player prize funds.” Zeljka Malobabic,MonRoi Customer Support continued:“PCMs are trendy. Electronic records helpplayers in preparations. They can analyzetheir opponent matches on the spot. Playerphoto broadcast is a real hit. We truly enjoyworking in beautiful Torino with a fantasticteam of arbiters!”MonRoi systemThe PersonalChess Manager is theonly patented FIDEapprovedPersonalChess Manager in the world. It records movesin a universal pictorial notation, recordstime spent on each move, wirelessly broadcastsgames, receives pairing information, storesgames, replays databank of chess games, views games in real-time, has SD card capabilities, easily transfers games to a computerand more! If Whitegoes now 8.c3 he allows Black to enter inMarshall Attack, one of the sharpest linesin Spanish game. The most funny thing isthat very often in such a case Black choosesto transpose to the main line with 8...d6instead of 8...d5. On the other hand a lot ofplayers with White prefer to avoid this linewith some “antimarshall” moves which willhappen in our game as well. The conclusionmight be that it is not so easy to say who ismore afraid to enter this line! 8.h3 One of theways to avoid Marshall Gambit (or MarshallAttack).
