When a vis tor enters the
South Am boy Elementary
School, an array of brightly
painted murals immediately
catches bin eye "Welcome
to a great place to learn" is
among the slogans which
adorn the walls in the
vestrbule of the building,
setting the tone for the entire
school
According to Principal
Joanne Lane-Frank, the
purpose of the murals is to
incite a positive self image in
her students about their

Edmonds, the Principal
says, "When you walk intr* a
building, within 12 feet of it,
you know whether you are in
a good place or in a place of
chaos '
Keeping both the South
Amboy Elementary School
and its surrounding
community a "good place
has been the objective of
Lane-Frank over the past
five years "My main goal is
to influence kids to have both
confidence and respect in
order for them to e.,joy
school and their lives," she
says. "I feel I am a part of
thi? immunity and 1 take
v«»ry seriously the
responsibility of managing
alt those in my charge."
fcane-Frank was born in
New York and then moved to
South Plainfield, New Jersey
as a child According to the
Principal, her close
relationship with her
parents, two sisters and
Brother served as the
"launch" for her success in
life. "My parents built our
family unit on valuing
important things such us
caring, working hard and
striving she says. Lar.e
Frank attributes the fact
that her childhood was in a
"nurturing, supportive and
pro-education" setting to her
later choice of careers
In order to pursue a
profession in education.
L. ne-Frank attended Seton
Hall University for both a
Bachelors and Masters
Degree in the field of study
Currently, she returns to
Seton. Hall to earn her
Doctorate Degree She
believes the experience is an
opportunity to demonstrate
to her students that
"education is a life long
process."
The Principals first
experience in the classroom
was as a writing teacher for
a high school gifted and
talented program in
Canfield, Ohio After five
years m Ohio, she returned
to New Jersey and worked
for the State Department of
Education as a writing
consultant
While working in the
Department of Education,
Lane-Frank provided
training sessions and
technical assistance for both
school administrators and
teachers She specialized in
the research arid application
of writing skills while
educating students One of
her accomplishments was
the establishment of the
mandatory HSPT wr ting
test for New Jersey students
Although she enjoyed her
work, she did not like the
constant moving from school

the opfx>rtunity of "getting
close' with the people whom
she had met She says: "1

Board of Education for
providing me with the
opportunity to do just that
From her experiences as a
consultant. Lane-Frank
notained the philosophy that
writing is an integral part of
the educational process
There is such a power in the
written word as the heart
and mind engages." she
says
Over the past five years,
Lane-Frank has appjied this
philosophy into ' the
curriculum at South Amboy
Elementary School She
instituted at the school the
Young Authors Program, m
which every student wrote
and bound their own nooks
These books were then
placed on the library shelves
for other students to read
"Writing is the highest
form of a reading skill," the
Principal says She cites the
fact that her students' scores
are in the ninetieth
percentile on standardized
reading tests as proof of her
theory
According to Lane-Frank,
all students have the
capacity to learn. "I believe
that the Wizard gave the
tinman nothing that he did.
not already have," she says.
However, the Principal
believes that a thriving
community is a necessity in
order to produce "wellrounded"
and "caring"
children. It is for this, reason
that she is deyotei to
contributing to society
Some of her involvements
include the Middlesex
County Principal's
Association. NECEL and
volunteer work for a
women's support group She
is also a co-chairperson for
SWAT, ihe group which
organized the drug-free D-
Day in South Amboy
"We all should-commit to
dedicating all that is in our
human spirit to rectifying
problems in order to make it
a better South Amboy. New-
Jersey and the.- world,' she
says

lives with her husband,
William, in Woodbridge She
believes sne is the mother of
300 children—her students
