every Saturday from 9:00 p.m. to l :0Q p.m. Vegetables and
fruit* are harvested directly from area farms.
Opening day activities will include drawings for free
produce and a petting no for the kids.
August 2 marks the anniversary of the actual signing of
the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Although July 4,
1771, appears on the document and 5s generally held to be
the date of the signing, members of the Continental
Congress did rot actually sign the Declaration of
Independence until a month later. Even then, some
members were unavailable and had to sign at a later date.
Only John Hancock, president of the Continental
Congrejs, signed a copy of the Declaration of Independence
on behalf of the entire Congress on July 4.
This month Councilman Jack Hulsart is celebrating 30
years of service at DuPont.
Also celebrating 90 years service are Jim Grover of South
Amboy, and Lawrence Kalicki of Parlin.
In a casual conversation recently a few graduates of St.
Mary's High School discussed events that occurred in the
latelMO's.
One of the topics that was brought up was the late Msgr.
Edward Griffith's Pearce-Arrow.
At the time St. Cecelia's parish in Iselin and St. James'
parish in Jamesburg were mission churches under the
jurisdiction of Msgr. Griffith
It was the obligation < ' St. Mary's Church to prepare the
children of these two mission churches for First Holy
Communion and Confirmation, a chore delegated to the
teaching Sisters of Mercy
The task of transporting these nuns to these mission
churches, using the Monsignor's Pearce-Arrow fell to high
school students Jim Harrigan, now of Martha Boulevard,
and Walter Walczak, now of South Feltus St., who were
among the very few who held drivers' licenses at the time.

This is just a reminder that all New Jersey Motor Vehicle
Inspection Stations that are normally open on Saturdays
will close at 1 pm rather than 4 pm beginning Saturday,

of a heart attack as: Uncomfortable pressure, fullness,
uqutectatg or pain in the center of 'he chest lasting for two
minutes or more; Pain spreading to the shoulders, neck,
jaw, arms, or back; Dizziness, fainting, sweating, nausea
and/or shortness of breath.

Here's how South Amboy voters cast ballots in the June 6
primary election.
In the Governor s race: Democrats—Alan Karcher, 189;
James Florio, 245; and Barbara Slgmund, 99.
Republicans-Jim Courier, 17; Chuck Hardwick, 21, Bill
Oormley, 12; Carey Edwards, 12; Gerald Cardinale, 10,
James Kolyer, 9; Lois Rand, 8; and Tom Blumqulst, S.
In the Assembly, Democrat-James McGreevey, 803;
George Otlowski, 460; and Joseph Bodnar. 128 Republicans

The city of Perth Amboy kicked off its celebration of the
200th anniversary of the signing of the Bill of Rights wi'h a
10K foot race through the city on June 11.
Among the participants in the race were South Amboy's
Jake Defort and Rich Tanchyk. Defort and Tanchyk
finished 64th and 65th out of 230 runners with times of 44:27
and 44:28, respectively.
In other foot race-related news, South Amboy's colleen
McCarthy finished 8th among all female runners in
Sayreville's 5K Race with the Stars June 14. Ms. McCarthy
also finished third of jll runners in the 20-29 age group in the
5-mlle Frog Hollow Independence Run July 1. Defort
finished 16th overall out of some 120 runners in the race.
Al Jankola, our Senior Citizen with the largest amount of
medals and plaques in the area, added five more during the
month of June At the Colonial Invitation Masters Swim
Meet in Freehold, Al won silver for 2nd place 100 yard
Freestyle and Bronze for 3rd place in 50 yd. breaststroke.
