prepare themselves lor an
outbreak of rabies that will
most likely re carried by
rabid raccoons over Ihe
Delaware River, perhaps as
early as this summer
The^iBease of rabies is
approaching New Jersey
fro'n several Pennsylvania
counties. It will probably
enter New Jersey from one
or more of the counties
bordering the Delaware
R.ver within the next 12
moi.'hs Over time, it is
expected to spread
throughout the State
Wijd anima',, s-ich as
raccoons, foxes, skunks,
groundhogs and bats are the
animals most likely to carry
rabies. These wild animals
with rabies don't always
display signs of illness and
,sometimes appear perfectly
healthy All bites and
scratches from wild animals
should receive prompt
medical attention If
possible, the wild animals
should be captured and
tested for rabies
According ti» the Stiite
Public Health Veterinarian,
Dr Faye K Sorhage. a
recent case of animal rabies
reported in New Jersey
involved a horse transported
from Montgomery County.
Pennslyvania. to New
Jersey on April 14 The horse
if believed to have been
exposed to a rabid raccoon. :n
Pennsylvania, although it
didn't show rabies
symptoms until 15 days after
its arrival in New Jersey < )n

positive for rabies
That horse was destroyed
and four other horses in .

Over the past five years,
about 5,000 of the more than
7,000 animals diagnosed with
rabies in the mid-Atlantic
states were raccoons The
other rabid animals include
684 skunks, 259 foxes, K;;
cats, 75 groundhogs. 40 cows.
