The market will run from July 8 through Thanksgiving,
August 2 marks the anniversary of the actual signing of
the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Although July 4,
1771, appears on the document and 5s generally held to be
the date of the signing, members of the Continental
Congress did rot actually sign the Declaration of
Independence until a month later. Even then, some
members were unavailable and had to sign at a later date.
Only John Hancock, president of the Continental
Congrejs, signed a copy of the Declaration of Independence
on behalf of the entire Congress on July 4.
This month Councilman Jack Hulsart is celebrating 30
years of service at DuPont.
Also celebrating 90 years service are Jim Grover of South
Amboy, and Lawrence Kalicki of Parlin.
In a casual conversation recently a few graduates of St.
Mary's High School discussed events that occurred in the
latelMO's.
One of the topics that was brought up was the late Msgr.
Edward Griffith's Pearce-Arrow.
At the time St. Cecelia's parish in Iselin and St. James'
parish in Jamesburg were mission churches under the
jurisdiction of Msgr. Griffith
It was the obligation < ' St. Mary's Church to prepare the
children of these two mission churches for First Holy
Communion and Confirmation, a chore delegated to the
teaching Sisters of Mercy
The task of transporting these nuns to these mission
churches, using the Monsignor's Pearce-Arrow fell to high
school students Jim Harrigan, now of Martha Boulevard,
and Walter Walczak, now of South Feltus St., who were
among the very few who held drivers' licenses at the time.
Jim, Walt, and the late Joe Szarejko of John St. were of the
cla,«o of 1930
Affiliate. "Research shows the chances of recovering from
a heart attack are much greater if the patient acts
The American Heart Association lists the warning signs
of a heart attack as: Uncomfortable pressure, fullness,
Joanne Lane-Frank, Educator;
On Target With the Future .*..
by iMbeli C Leshko
When a vis tor enters the
South Am boy Elementary
School, an array of brightly
painted murals immediately
catches bin eye "Welcome
to a great place to learn" is
among the slogans which
adorn the walls in the
vestrbule of the building,
setting the tone for the entire
school
According to Principal
Joanne Lane-Frank, the
purpose of the murals is to
incite a positive self image in
her students about their
school Calling jpon fhtideas
Of educator Ron
Edmonds, the Principal
says, "When you walk intr* a
building, within 12 feet of it,
you know whether you are in
a good place or in a place of
chaos '
Keeping both the South
Amboy Elementary School
and its surrounding
community a "good place
has been the objective of
Lane-Frank over the past
five years "My main goal is
to influence kids to have both
confidence and respect in
order for them to e.,joy
school and their lives," she
says. "I feel I am a part of
thi? immunity and 1 take
v«»ry seriously the
responsibility of managing
alt those in my charge."
fcane-Frank was born in
New York and then moved to
South Plainfield, New Jersey
as a child According to the
Principal, her close
relationship with her
parents, two sisters and
Brother served as the
"launch" for her success in
life. "My parents built our
family unit on valuing
important things such us
caring, working hard and
striving she says. Lar.e
Frank attributes the fact
that her childhood was in a
"nurturing, supportive and
pro-education" setting to her
later choice of careers
In order to pursue a
profession in education.
L. ne-Frank attended Seton
Hall University for both a
Bachelors and Masters
Degree in the field of study
Currently, she returns to
Seton. Hall to earn her
Doctorate Degree She
believes the experience is an
opportunity to demonstrate
to her students that
"education is a life long
process."
The Principals first
experience in the classroom
was as a writing teacher for
a high school gifted and
talented program in
Canfield, Ohio After five
years m Ohio, she returned
to New Jersey and worked
for the State Department of
Education as a writing
consultant
While working in the
Department of Education,
Lane-Frank provided
training sessions and
technical assistance for both
school administrators and
teachers She specialized in
the research arid application
of writing skills while
educating students One of
her accomplishments was
the establishment of the
mandatory HSPT wr ting
test for New Jersey students
Although she enjoyed her
work, she did not like the
constant moving from school
tc school each week without
the opfx>rtunity of "getting
close' with the people whom
she had met She says: "1
•was re'Jtly to apply imyi
skills in ont setting and in a
concentrated way. I am
most grateful to Mr John
Olexa and the South Ambjy
Board of Education for
providing me with the
opportunity to do just that
From her experiences as a
consultant. Lane-Frank
notained the philosophy that
writing is an integral part of
the educational process
There is such a power in the
written word as the heart
and mind engages." she
says
Over the past five years,
Lane-Frank has appjied this
philosophy into ' the
curriculum at South Amboy
Elementary School She
instituted at the school the
Young Authors Program, m
which every student wrote
and bound their own nooks
These books were then
placed on the library shelves
for other students to read
"Writing is the highest
form of a reading skill," the
Principal says She cites the
fact that her students' scores
are in the ninetieth
percentile on standardized
reading tests as proof of her
theory
According to Lane-Frank,
all students have the
capacity to learn. "I believe
that the Wizard gave the
tinman nothing that he did.
not already have," she says.
However, the Principal
believes that a thriving
community is a necessity in
order to produce "wellrounded"
and "caring"
children. It is for this, reason
that she is deyotei to
contributing to society
Some of her involvements
include the Middlesex
County Principal's
Association. NECEL and
volunteer work for a
women's support group She
is also a co-chairperson for
SWAT, ihe group which
organized the drug-free D-
Day in South Amboy
"We all should-commit to
dedicating all that is in our
human spirit to rectifying
problems in order to make it
a better South Amboy. New-
Jersey and the.- world,' she
says
Currently . Lane-Frank
lives with her husband,
William, in Woodbridge She
believes sne is the mother of
300 children—her students
What's Going On?
An Essay
v
You have to wonder what
is on the mind of the
members of the Supreme
Court who have said burning
theQag b covered under the
BUI of Rights under free
Th» Supreme Court is the
body that it supposed to
uphold the laws crt this land
but this very ferny has said
that it Is okty to burn the
very symbol of the ltw»,
ideals and principles of thU
natisn. Beyond Belief
There are a number of
reaaaaa that burning the flag
should be illegal The first
reason, perhaps the main
reason, is respect. Some can
argue that the flag is just a
colorful tablecloth but that is
so far from the issue. The
American Flag has endured
for centuries (back to Betsy
Ross days) as the symbol of
the nation. The flag has
flown in war (Star-
Spangled Banner") and
peace. The National
Anthem, based on the flag
still waving in a battle
during the War of 1812. takes
great pride in this symbol of
what our nation is
In the words of Little
Steven: "I am a patriot and I
love my country, because
my country is all I know."
Little Steven, like many
socially-conscious activists,
has been critical of the
policies of this nation.
Criticising the president or
the government as a whole is
one thing. Burning the
Amer icanflag is desecration
of all that this nation stands
on. People can be critical and
still respectful.
A few years ago, it was
trendy for thuse dissatisfied
with the government to stay
seated during the National
Anthem. That practice was
making a statement
although it was never clear
about what.
The same can be said for
flag burning. The burning of
the flag is a statement of
anti-US, sentiment but the
reasons why are unclear.
The respect for the fl»g, of
its meaning, of its history
and tradition should be
protected. It is, after all, our
history.
Ever since the beginning
of schoul you Jire pledging
allegiance to the flag. After
praying to God, it was the
hand on your heart for the
flag.
You have to wonder, if
someone is so unhappy with
this country to want to bum
the flag, why don't they
Two Earn Two-Year Certification
As Chemical Dependency Nurses
As the population of
persons affected by both
mental health and substance
abuse problems increases,
so does the need for
members of the nursin
gprofession to continue th eir
education and remain up to
date on the techniques for
treating dually diagnosed
patients At South Amboy
Memorial Hospital and
Community Mental Health
Center, the need for
specialized training has
increased greatly due to the
openings of the Atcohol
Detoxification unit and the
Mentally III Chemical
Abuser (MICA) :M
In response to the need for
continuous education and
training, two mental health
nurses and one certified
alcoholism counselor
recently earned certification
as chemical dependency
nurses. The two-year
certification was awarded
by the National Consortium
ofChemica! Dependency
Nurses, Inc , a group that
recognizes the expertise and
specialty practice oi treating
dually-diagnosed patients
Those receiving the
certification were Mary
All three have worked with
dually-diagnosed patients in
the mental health and
Alcohol Detoxification units
at South Amboy Memorial
Hospital for a total of 35
years. During that time,
they have seen the number
of patients diagnosed with
both a psychiatric disorder
and substance abuse
problem increase
substantially, according to
Mrs. Kelleher. In
recognition of the growing
need for specialized
treatments, the hospital
opened an Alcohoj
Detoxification unit two years
ago and opened the state's
first Mentally III Chemical
Abuser unit in April
According to Mrs
Kelleher, the nurses in the
hospital's mental health unit
are being cross-trained to
deal with dually-diagnosed
patients "Other nurses on
staff are eager to earn their
certification as chemical
dependency nurses to
enha-.ce their exper;ise in
the mental health field." she
said Keeping up with the
techniques for treating
dually-diagnosed patients is
also very important to
Rosemane Stern, a certified
approaching New Jersey
fro'n several Pennsylvania
counties. It will probably
enter New Jersey from one
or more of the counties
bordering the Delaware
R.ver within the next 12
moi.'hs Over time, it is
expected to spread
throughout the State
Wijd anima',, s-ich as
raccoons, foxes, skunks,
groundhogs and bats are the
animals most likely to carry
rabies. These wild animals
with rabies don't always
display signs of illness and
,sometimes appear perfectly
healthy All bites and
scratches from wild animals
should receive prompt
medical attention If
possible, the wild animals
should be captured and
tested for rabies
According ti» the Stiite
Public Health Veterinarian,
Dr Faye K Sorhage. a
recent case of animal rabies
reported in New Jersey
involved a horse transported
from Montgomery County.
Pennslyvania. to New
Jersey on April 14 The horse
if believed to have been
exposed to a rabid raccoon. :n
Pennsylvania, although it
didn't show rabies
symptoms until 15 days after
its arrival in New Jersey < )n
May dth, it was found to be
positive for rabies
That horse was destroyed
and four other horses in .
contact with i\,v rabid horse
are beinR closely observed.
Dr Sorhage saicU^ In
addition, two New Je*rsey
residents who were exposed
to the infectious secretions of
the animal required ariti
New Jersey health
. officials expect a rabies
outbreak to occur in New
Jersey as a result of rabid
raccoons crossing the
Delaware River from one of
several Pennsylvania
counties where rabies
outbreaks have occurred
Raccoons, which are the
predominate, animal
infectf.d with rabies in the
current outbreak, are very
mobile and have crossed
rivers wider .nan the
Delaware. Dr Coyesaid
Over the past five years,
about 5,000 of the more than
7,000 animals diagnosed with
rabies in the mid-Atlantic
other rabid animals include
684 skunks, 259 foxes, K;;
26 dogs, 20 horses aid a
smaller number of other
animals
What Has Happened to the Media?
An Essay
Come with me back to the essay-Wh«n does the media
good old days of the media... go too far? What it the news
Once upon a time the press and what is invasion of
Eddie's recent shows at
the Stone Pony, Birch Hill
I no, Empire Rock Room,
Obsessions and Joe
Pop's—venues where he first
achieved notoriety—served
to break in the new band and
sound The eight member
group is comprised of all
new players with the
exception of guitarist Joe
Sweeney
"Shake My Faith" has
moved into the opening slot
of the live show which sets
the tone quite effectively for
what's to follow. "Pay Day,"
"hich has been vastly
reworked than the familiar
version played for years,
Eddie alternates between
new songs and selections
from the first album and
some well-chosen covers
including Todd Rundgren's
'i New Somi IWt Shake Your FiHIi
"We Got to Find You a
Woman" which, obviously,
fits In the overall theme of
his own songs
The new single "Swear" is
a dance club oriented
sounding record with the
very catchy hook—"Put
your hand on your he*rt and
swear-SWEAR!" Like
"Shake My Faith. 1 "Swear"
also has some strong
religious imagery. "Comfort
me like an answered prayer/
L*y me down/ Put your hand
on my heart and swear."
At all of the above
mentioned shows, Eddie
ended with his traditional
cover of Rod Stewart's
"Maggie May " However, a
new twist has been
added—as 'the band sits
arour.d him, Eddie and
Sweeney alone perform an\
acoustic version of his song
"Busier, ' which was
included on his first album.
Bare but striking.
"Buster." a moving ode to
