RSL NEWS – April 2011 Special Notice: ANZAC DAY Dawn Service Monday 25 th April. The committee has decided to break with tradition and hold a Dawn Service at 6am on the ANZAC Day proper. We thank the few who responded in favour of a march but, with the overall lack of interest from the community for a Veterans March and the ill-health of the president, it was felt that a Dawn Service would be more appropriate and meaningful. There will be a sausage/egg sizzle afterwards for a gold coin donation. Balaklava RSL Races 13 th April. Maureen has tickets which covers the bus trip, entry and a meal. It‘s a great day and we all look forward to it. Be there and grab your share! Help! Volunteers are needed to sell ANZAC badges on Easter Saturday. Please phone Liz if you can help. Meals - Due to the ever-increasing rise of food and groceries for Thursday night meals unfortunately we must raise the cost of meals to $7.00 per head. Best wishes to everyone laid low and to our president, Dave, who is, at time of writing, in hospital. We are always looking for new members – if you believe you could be eligible to join and have the RSL at heart, please contact a committee member to verify your eligibility. Champagne welcome us as envious eyes from the people on the bank watched Captain Dean make a perfect sailing. Blocking our ears, we warned the ferry we were on our way to Pelican Point for a fun day and to see the beautiful Murray at its peak. Birds sang, ducks swam past, eagles soared to the sky and shags landed to stretch and dry their wings, kangaroos eyed us warily from the shore. On the boat the riff raff of Morgan according to Trevor Carpenter (who is he?) sipped icy cold drinks and nibbled on finger food while Trevor video taped the wild life, beautiful trees and cliffs. Submerged shacks and caravans and hailed and insulted all of his friends on the river bank .Chris, Dave and Liz waved from the cliff tops, Geraldine and Merv Myers waved from their marooned house with the cruiser tied to the stairs. Sylvie gazed nostalgically at the river where she spent so many years ―BIG BUGGER‖ cruised by with Jim and Celia Johnson and Lucy Fry aboard and Lucy waving about a bottle of water (what was in the eski Lucy?) Anna and Margie posed titanic fashion off the bow, we sang along to good old Aussie classics. People waved from boats and shacks, Maur and Yak gazed sentimentally at their water surrounded homes. We returned after an incredible cruise just in time for more fun at the Commercial social club, welcome back to Morgan for your visit, Sylvia and Trevor. (special mention to gentleman Trev who gave up his seat in the shade to Yak who is sun sensitive, mind you I was not allowedd to forget it, Thanks Trev. Anna and Dean set sail again with people who had waited all afternoon for a chance to tour on the ―HAMA‖ EXPECTING VISITORS, FAMILY? BOOK A WATER TOUR WITH DEAN FOR AN INEXPENSIVE BUT GREAT DAY OUT. HAPPY BIRTHDAY Happy birthday to all the young girls of Morgan . The Terminus was the venue for celebrations of Rosie Mackereth, Anna Beard, Kay Burr, Georgie White and Geraldine Myer‘s birthdays. No ages mentioned but over 25 people turned up to see if we had grown a few more grey hairs or developed another wrinkle. Naturally none of the signs of aging were observed. A great lunch, delicious birthday cake from Marg and none of us even cared how old we had turned. Wish the parties would come around more often than the birthdays ! YAK. FISHY STORY UPDATE Following the long tale last month, the department of aquaculture have finally found one small nature fish suitable to stock garden ponds and dams with to ―fight the bite‖. The fish is the Murray – Darling Rainbow fish. Unfortunately they sell in the city for $11 per fish. However the department assured me it was legal to catch them in a net and they were to be found in plenty under willow trees. HELP? Where are the nearest willows? 7 MORGAN 2011 2011 ANZAC DAY DAWN SERVICE Monday Monday 25 th April 6.00am Will you be there to support the Vets? They were there for you! NASHO TOURING CLUB Our NASHO touring group has just enjoyed another week together, this time at the excellent Tanunda caravan park - 50 people staying in caravans and cabins plus 6 small dogs. Quite warm weather rather spoilt our usual ―sitting and chatting‖ but had plenty to keep us entertained. Bocce afternoons, sadly as usual the men trounced the ladies in the fun game & the rolling pin throwing is proving we have some very good ―eye on the target‖ Nasho‘s with our scarecrow being hit many times and several times had his hat removed. Several folk, including myself, visited Maggie Beers for morning tea (she was even there) and Lego Land was another attraction. Knitting was again a past time with 10 rugs being donated to various nursing homes – total of rugs has now reached 450. Some of our ladies are now knitting ―skull‖ caps to be sent to the soldiers in Afghanistan – these are worn under the helmets and much appreciated by the men to keep their heads warm. We enjoyed 2 lovely lunches and the last morning was hot scones, jam and cream – we have some enthusiastic cooks in our group. The final event was dinner at the Tanunda hotel and the presentation of the ―wooden spoon‖ which is given to anyone who ―misbehaves‖ during the week. Any little slip and you could be eligible for the spoon. At each rally, our club presents the caravan park folk with one of our touring club banners and it‘s great on a return visit to see them displayed in the reception area. I‘d like to thank the people who have given me wool, I can assure you it has all been put to good use in the rugs for nursing homes. Our next trip away will be to Port Broughton in May.
