Busting Ambulance myths at Morgan Ambulance services are mysterious. Most people don't really consider how they work until they need an ambulance—fast. So the volunteers from SA Ambulance Service at Morgan would like to let you know a bit more about how they operate and invite you to join them. Here are a few myths and questions out there about your local ambulance service. Do the ambos at Morgan ambulance station get paid? All of the people who provide local ambulance service at Morgan are volunteers. They are just regular people who have put up their hand to train to learn life-saving skills and then regularly go on the roster to provide local ambulance services. Why can it take more than 20 minutes for an ambulance to reach me when I live in the Morgan township? SA Ambulance Service will always send an ambulance when needed. If there is no crew available at Morgan when you call an ambulance, you will have to wait for the next closest available ambulance to reach you, e.g. from Waikerie. I don't like seeing blood. Could I be a volunteer ambulance officer? The majority of ambulance cases don‘t involve blood. Very often we are called out to people with chest pain or asthma, or to old people who have fallen or need to be transferred between hospitals or to a medical appointment. On those occasions where we do attend car crashes, the great training and support we receive means we know what to do and can make a difference. I‘m a shift worker. Can I still become a volunteer ambulance officer? Yes. You are still able to become a volunteer ambulance officer because you can choose when you go on the roster. Even if you are available for one shift a week, it would make a big difference. We need people for weekdays, night times and weekends. Of course, you also need to be available for weekly training sessions. I don't want to hang around at the ambulance station waiting to be called out. Is there any other way of volunteering on the ambulance? Yes. If you live within a six-kilometre radius of the Morgan ambulance station, you don't even need to come into the station to cover your shift. You take a pager home and can go about your daily routine at home or in the local area. You only respond if you are paged to a case. Unfortunately, due to changes for our team members over the past few months, our volunteer numbers have dropped dramatically. This makes it very difficult for us to fill the local roster, 24 hours a day. You can change this by becoming a volunteer ambulance officer. You never know when your family, friends or someone else in your community will need an ambulance. You can make a big difference to someone's life and your own. MID MURRAY COUNCIL MORGAN RIVERFRONT PRECINCT PROJECT PUBLIC MEETING Notice is given that a Public Meeting will be held on Thursday 14 April 2011 at the Morgan/Cadell Tigers Sports Club, North East Terrace, Morgan at 6.30 pm for 7.00 pm commencement. The purpose of the meeting is to allow members of the public to view the Morgan Riverfront Precinct Conceptual draft plans presented by the designers Hilary Hamnett & Associates and provide feedback/suggestions. The draft plans will also be available for viewing and comment at the Mid Murray Council Offices at the corner of Fourth & Eighth Streets, Morgan, 49 Adelaide Road, Mannum and Main Street, Cambrai from the 15 April to 13 May 2011 from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm. In addition, the plans will be available to view on line on the Mid Murray Council website www.mid-murray.sa.gov.au and comments can be emailed to postbox@mid-murray.sa.gov.au by 13 May 2011.
