Busting Ambulance myths at Morgan
Ambulance services are mysterious. Most people don't really consider how they work until they
need an ambulance—fast. So the volunteers from SA Ambulance Service at Morgan would like
to let you know a bit more about how they operate and invite you to join them. Here are a few
myths and questions out there about your local ambulance service.
Do the ambos at Morgan ambulance station get paid?
All of the people who provide local ambulance service at Morgan are volunteers. They are just regular people
who have put up their hand to train to learn life-saving skills and then regularly go on the roster to provide local
ambulance services.
Why can it take more than 20 minutes for an ambulance to reach me when I live in the Morgan township?
SA Ambulance Service will always send an ambulance when needed. If there is no crew available at Morgan
when you call an ambulance, you will have to wait for the next closest available ambulance to reach you, e.g.
from Waikerie.
I don't like seeing blood. Could I be a volunteer ambulance officer?
The majority of ambulance cases don‘t involve blood. Very often we are called out to people with chest pain or
asthma, or to old people who have fallen or need to be transferred between hospitals or to a medical
appointment.
On those occasions where we do attend car crashes, the great training and support we receive means we know
what to do and can make a difference.
I‘m a shift worker. Can I still become a volunteer ambulance officer?
Yes. You are still able to become a volunteer ambulance officer because you can choose when you go on the
roster. Even if you are available for one shift a week, it would make a big difference. We need people for
weekdays, night times and weekends. Of course, you also need to be available for weekly training sessions.
I don't want to hang around at the ambulance station waiting to be called out. Is there any other way of
volunteering on the ambulance?
Yes. If you live within a six-kilometre radius of the Morgan ambulance station, you don't even need to come into
the station to cover your shift. You take a pager home and can go about your daily routine at home or in the local
area. You only respond if you are paged to a case.
Unfortunately, due to changes for our team members over the past few months, our volunteer numbers have
dropped dramatically. This makes it very difficult for us to fill the local roster, 24 hours a day.
You can change this by becoming a volunteer ambulance officer. You never know when your family, friends or
someone else in your community will need an ambulance. You can make a big difference to someone's life and
your own.
Call 1800 655 306 to find more about becoming a volunteer ambulance officer at Morgan.
RSL NEWS – April 2011
Special Notice: ANZAC DAY Dawn Service Monday 25 th April.
The committee has decided to break with tradition and hold a Dawn Service at 6am on
the ANZAC Day proper. We thank the few who responded in favour of a march but,
with the overall lack of interest from the community for a Veterans March and the
ill-health of the president, it was felt that a Dawn Service would be more appropriate
and meaningful. There will be a sausage/egg sizzle afterwards for a gold coin donation.
Balaklava RSL Races 13 th April. Maureen has tickets which covers the bus trip, entry and a meal.
It‘s a great day and we all look forward to it. Be there and grab your share!
Help! Volunteers are needed to sell ANZAC badges on Easter Saturday. Please phone Liz if you
can help.
Meals - Due to the ever-increasing rise of food and groceries for Thursday night meals unfortunately
we must raise the cost of meals to $7.00 per head.
Best wishes to everyone laid low and to our president, Dave, who is, at time of writing, in hospital.
We are always looking for new members – if you believe you could be eligible to join and have the
RSL at heart, please contact a committee member to verify your eligibility.
DOWN THE RIVER WITH YAK AND FRIENDS
A beautiful Sunday afternoon as we boarded Anna and Deans ―HAMA ― Scenic Morgan Cruise boat.
Champagne welcome us as envious eyes from the people on the bank watched Captain Dean make a perfect
sailing. Blocking our ears, we warned the ferry we were on our way to Pelican Point for a fun day and to see the
beautiful Murray at its peak. Birds sang, ducks swam past, eagles soared to the sky and shags landed to stretch
and dry their wings, kangaroos eyed us warily from the shore. On the boat the riff raff of Morgan according to
Trevor Carpenter (who is he?) sipped icy cold drinks and nibbled on finger food while Trevor video taped the
wild life, beautiful trees and cliffs. Submerged shacks and caravans and hailed and insulted all of his friends on
the river bank .Chris, Dave and Liz waved from the cliff tops, Geraldine and Merv Myers waved from their
marooned house with the cruiser tied to the stairs. Sylvie gazed nostalgically at the river where she spent so
many years ―BIG BUGGER‖ cruised by with Jim and Celia Johnson and Lucy Fry aboard and Lucy waving about
a bottle of water (what was in the eski Lucy?) Anna and Margie posed titanic fashion off the bow, we sang
along to good old Aussie classics.
People waved from boats and shacks, Maur and Yak gazed sentimentally at their water surrounded homes. We
returned after an incredible cruise just in time for more fun at the Commercial social club, welcome back to
Morgan for your visit, Sylvia and Trevor. (special mention to gentleman Trev who gave up his seat in the shade
to Yak who is sun sensitive, mind you I was not allowedd to forget it, Thanks Trev. Anna and Dean set sail again
with people who had waited all afternoon for a chance to tour on the ―HAMA‖
EXPECTING VISITORS, FAMILY?
BOOK A WATER TOUR WITH DEAN FOR AN INEXPENSIVE BUT GREAT DAY OUT.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY
Happy birthday to all the young girls of Morgan . The Terminus was the venue for celebrations of Rosie Mackereth,
Anna Beard, Kay Burr, Georgie White and Geraldine Myer‘s birthdays. No ages mentioned but over 25 people
turned up to see if we had grown a few more grey hairs or developed another wrinkle. Naturally none of the signs
of aging were observed. A great lunch, delicious birthday cake from Marg and none of us even cared how old we
had turned. Wish the parties would come around more often than the birthdays ! YAK.
FISHY STORY UPDATE
Following the long tale last month, the department of aquaculture have finally found one small nature fish suitable
to stock garden ponds and dams with to ―fight the bite‖. The fish is the Murray – Darling Rainbow fish.
Unfortunately they sell in the city for $11 per fish. However the department assured me it was legal to catch them
in a net and they were to be found in plenty under willow trees. HELP? Where are the nearest willows?
ANZAC DAY DAWN SERVICE
Monday Monday
25 th April 6.00am
Will you be there to support the Vets?
They were there for you!
NASHO TOURING CLUB
Our NASHO touring group has just enjoyed another
week together, this time at the excellent Tanunda
caravan park - 50 people staying in caravans and
cabins plus 6 small dogs.
Quite warm weather rather spoilt our usual ―sitting
and chatting‖ but had plenty to keep us entertained.
Bocce afternoons, sadly as usual the men trounced the ladies in the fun game & the rolling pin throwing is
proving we have some very good ―eye on the target‖ Nasho‘s with our scarecrow being hit many times and
several times had his hat removed. Several folk, including myself, visited Maggie Beers for morning tea (she
was even there) and Lego Land was another attraction.
Knitting was again a past time with 10 rugs being donated to various nursing homes – total of rugs has now
reached 450. Some of our ladies are now knitting ―skull‖ caps to be sent to the soldiers in Afghanistan – these
are worn under the helmets and much appreciated by the men to keep their
heads warm.
We enjoyed 2 lovely lunches and the last morning was hot scones, jam and
cream – we have some enthusiastic cooks in our group. The final event was
dinner at the Tanunda hotel and the presentation of the ―wooden spoon‖ which
is given to anyone who ―misbehaves‖ during the week. Any little slip and you
could be eligible for the spoon. At each rally, our club presents the caravan
park folk with one of our touring club banners and it‘s great on a return visit to
see them displayed in the reception area.
I‘d like to thank the people who have given me wool, I can assure you it has all
been put to good use in the rugs for nursing homes. Our next trip away will be
to Port Broughton in May.
„The Pickers Quarters‟
the view
Your hosts Julie and Sheldon invite you to come, relax and spend time enjoying the serenity of the Riverland at
this secluded B&B, ‗the pickers quarters‘ at their home, Watookya, Cadell S.A. You can spend time doing
activities such as fishing, yabbying, skiing or any water activity as you are only a five minute walk from the mighty
Murray or a short drive to the boat ramp. Bird-watching or photography is also on offer as due to the high water
we are fortunate to be inundated with many species that are normally absent. Spend some wind down time and
relax with a locally produced wine and perhaps some locally grown fruit and veg. The pickers quarters has a
relaxed cottage feel with all the amenities including queen size bed and cooking facilities if you choose to eat in.
A barbeque pack can be arranged for your convenience. Only 1.5 hours from Adelaide in the township of Cadell,
March has been another unkind month with further
natural disasters causing havoc across the planet. The
massive Japanese quake followed by the equally
massive tsunamis that pulverized fishing villages along
the coast, brought to us, sitting in the comfort of our
lounge room a chilling feeling. Just recalling the image
of that black wave of water spreading inland, destroying
everything in its path, is numbing. The nuclear fallout is
perhaps even more disturbing. No matter what the
experts say – we just do not know what this means for
our environment and the flow on impacts to those living
on the planet. We are now hearing of not just problems
with ‗radioactive‘ veggies at markets but what of the
produce from the oceans? It appears that the fallout is
going global being either swept towards our coasts by
the tides or carried in air by the wind.
We have barely recovered from the Christchurch
disaster and then Japan and now the Myanmar quake.
Given the closed nature of this third-world country we
can only hope that those in need receive it.
The other points of interest worth watching is the stealth
attack of the 2 supermarket giants as they attempt to
wipe out all corner stores with the huge reduction on,
firstly milk prices and seemingly now possibly beer. And
don‘t let your guard drop when it comes to petrol prices,
soon doom and gloom reports will start hitting the
airwaves, probably driven by the oil firms themselves,
letting everyone know that as the cost per barrel moves
past $100 we should expect prices to hit $1.80 per litre.
No mention of the fact that as the A$ rocketed past the
US$1.00 mark from its lowly levels of around 70c, whilst
the cost per barrel plummeted, yet somehow the cost
per litre seemed to always hover around $1.30.
Will we ever understand how petrol pricing works?
Monthly Meeting 2nd Tuesday 7.30pm
All welcome

WAKE UP TIME
When the shearing sheds are silent and the stock
camps fallen quiet
When the gidgee coals no longer glow across the
outback night
And the bush is forced to hang a sign, '. gone broke and
won't be back'
And spirits fear to find a way beyond the beaten track.
When harvesters stand derelict upon the wind swept
plains.
And brave hearts pin their hopes no more on chance of
loving rains.
When a hundred outback settlements are ghost towns
overnight
When we've lost the drive and heart we had to once
more see us right
When 'Pioneer' means a stereo and 'Digger' some
backhoe
And the 'Outback' is behind the house. there's nowhere
else to go
And 'Anzac' is a biscuit brand and probably foreign
owned
And education really means brainwashed and neatly
cloned
When you have to bake a loaf of bread to make a
decent crust
And our heritage once enshrined in gold is crumbling to
dust
The Story.
I was a very happy man. My wonderful girlfriend and I
had been dating for over a year, and so we decided to
get married.
There was only one little thing bothering me....It was
her beautiful younger sister.
My prospective sister-in-law was 22, wore very tight
miniskirts, and generally was bra-less.
She would regularly bend down when she was near
me, and I always got more than a nice view. It had to
be deliberate on her part, because she never did it
when she was nearanyone else.
One day her 'little' sister called and asked me to come
over to check the wedding invitations. She was alone
when I arrived, and she whispered to me that she had
feelings and desires for me that she couldn't overcome.
She told me that she wanted me just once before I got
married and committed my life to her sister.
16
And old folk pay their camping fees on land 16 for which
they fought
And fishing is a great escape; this is until
you're caught
When you see our kids with yankee caps and
resentment in their eyes
And the soaring crime and hopeless hearts is no longer
a surprise
When the name of RM Williams is a yuppie clothing
brand
And not a product of our heritage that grew off the land
When offering a hand makes people think you'll
amputate
And two dogs meeting in the street is what you call a
'Mate'
When 'Political Correctness' has replaced all common
sense
When you're forced to see it their way, there's no sitting
on the fence
Yes one day you might find yourself an outcast in this
land
Perhaps your heart will tell you then, ' I should have
made a stand'
Just go and ask the farmers that should remove all
doubt
Then join the swelling ranks who say, ' don't sell
Australia out'
Well, I was in total shock, and couldn't say a word.
She said, 'I'm going upstairs to my bedroom, and if you
want one last wild fling, just come up and get me.'
I was stunned and frozen in shock as I watched her go
up the stairs. I stood there for a moment..... then turned
away and made a beeline straight to the front door.
I opened the door, and headed straight towards my
car.
Good Lord! My entire future in-laws were standing
outside, all clapping!
With tears in his eyes, my prospective father-in-law
hugged me and said, 'We are very happy that you have
passed our little test. We couldn't ask for a better man
for our daughter.
Welcome to the family.'
And the moral of this story is:
Always keep your condoms in your car.
Historic Paddleboats are coming to Morgan
The river-port town of Morgan is getting ready to celebrate the arrival of an historic flotilla of river 21 craft on
Saturday April 9 th and Sunday 10 th , 2011.
Headlining the visit will be the 1908 Echuca built river freighter, P.S.Oscar W from Goolwa and the 1897
Milang built P.S. Marion from Mannum. It is hoped a number of other historic and interesting vessels will also
come to the party.
On Saturday April 9th Morgan Museum will host a special afternoon tea at 3.30pm in the historic Landseers
building, incorporating the presentation of the River Captains Honour Board by Captain Trevor Bedford.
On Saturday night the 'Hey Hey It's Morgan' Variety night, featuring many of our talented local identities, will
rock the newly renovated Morgan Institute. The $45 ticket includes a delicious 3 course meal, a
commemorative glass with wine of your choice, entertainment from assorted talented actors and music by
Warren Hardiman. Wine from Spook Hill Wines and Scott Creek Wines will be available with beer and soft
drinks. Tickets are limited and are selling fast. Phone 0419853534, 0427716560,Information Centre 8540 3114
On Sunday April 10 from 10am - 4pm, we will be doing our best to focus the spotlight on Morgan and her
historic past. Celebrations will centre on the beautiful Lion's Riverfront Park with a display of invited river craft,
historic cars, motorcycles and vintage machinery. We will have a selection of food and craft exhibitors and live
entertainment once again by Warren Hardiman.
The PS Marion & PS Oscar W will be open to the public so you can experience these historic vessels and view
the extraordinary restoration works which have been carried out by their dedicated volunteers.
Morgan Scenic Cruises will also offer trips from the riverfront and we encourage you to take a ride with Dean and
Anna to see the mighty river at it‘s magnificent best. Dean 0429402243.
MORGAN COMMUNITY VAN ART WORK
The M.T.D.C.A. would like to thank all the young
artists on their completion of the community van
mural. Also the staff, especially Renai and the many
helpers, who made the work so much quicker by
pouring and mixing paint, encouraging the students
and of course cleaning up.
Artist / co-ordinator DIANA ANGEL said she hoped
we could use their talents for other delightful art
EARTHMOVING

MURRAY DARLING BASIN PLAN Member for Stuart
First of all, there is a significant stretch of the River Murray and communities in the electorate of Stuart, particularly 31 in the
area around Morgan, Blanchetown and Cadell. That area has been particularly hard-hit by the lack of water over the last
many, many years. It is a tremendous part of the Riverland and has very proud communities.
I point out that Cadell, I think, has probably been hit hardest of just about any community that I can think of anywhere up and
down the River Murray in South Australia. The reason for that is not because there is anything wrong with the community of
Cadell; it is a very proud community with a lot going for itself, but it is near Morgan and Blanchetown, which have stronger
tourism businesses, connections and infrastructure. They are more reliant on irrigation and primary production than many of
the other towns, so they have suffered more because they have a bit less to fall back on.
The difficulties with the River Murray over the last decade, really, but certainly the last five years, have been particularly hard
on that part of the Murray and on Cadell. Of course, they welcome the rains
Another area within the electorate of Stuart that has really done it tough is the area below Lock 1, downstream from
Blanchetown. This is an area that not only suffered from the impacts of their ability to draw water for irrigation and the
drought, but they also suffered enormously with regard to the drop in the level. Upstream of Lock 1, while there was reduced
flow and reduced water running through the river, they did not lose their level, so tourism was still okay. They certainly went
through hard times, probably more because of perception than anything else.
There was very little rain falling on their country on either side of the river. There were drastic cuts to what they could draw
out of the river. Also, right in front of them, they really had the heartbreaking, very obvious hit-you-in-the-face issues of the
water just subsiding. From purely a Stuart perspective, I take these issues with the river very seriously, and of course have a
particular interest in the minister's motion that the Natural Resources Committee inquire into the Murray-Darling Basin plan.
We have seen enormous changes and great difficulty with regard to the drastic cuts in irrigation, lack of water and, most
importantly to my mind, the enormous impact on communities and the economy. The communities and the economies of the
people who live on and near the river, up and down the full length of it in South Australia, have been really dreadfully
impacted.
The other thing that is very important with regard to the River Murray, the drought and the lack of flows that we have seen
coming from upstream over recent years, and now the tremendous rains that we have had in South Australia and in other
places in the country which have led to the river levels rising and the flow increasing, and really boom times for the river, is
the whole question as to what is reversible. For over 100 years we have been taking water out of this river, and we have
caused difficulty for ourselves as a state and as communities. It is not as simple as to say, 'Well, if we change what we take
out of it, if we stop taking it out, if we decrease what we take out, that it is automatically reversible and the environment just
goes back to where it was 100 years ago.'
That is not the case. It is certainly not the case in my mind. In fact, we are seeing at the moment in that area, below Lock 1,
that I mentioned before, that they were in a diabolical situation in the last few years; now they are in a very difficult situation
because of the flooding. This is a vibrant, changing, up-and-down environment, and I think for us to think that we would just
put a plan in place that will ameliorate all of that, fix that, get things back to the way we want it to be, even if we knew the way
we wanted it to be anyway, is probably a little bit naive.
My second point is that every single South Australian should have a very intense interest in the health of this Murray and, of
course, our section of the Murray in South Australia is a key component of the broader Murray-Darling Basin area.
It may well become clearer, and the minister may well tell us in more detail down the track—that would be good—but to say
that he would like us to inquire into the Murray-Darling Basin plan is a very broad, wide-open statement. I would like to have
some confidence and I would like to have some commitment from the minister that, if he wants this committee to go through
all this work, the recommendations would be listened to, followed and implemented to the best of his ability, because
otherwise we would really be wasting our time.
Make no mistake, this would be an enormous job. Hundreds of people and millions of dollars have been spent already into
looking into this issue, and that will get us up to a point where whichever draft of the plan the minister would like a committee
to look into will be tabled, and then there will be another look at it. It just would not be worth anybody's time to go to all that
extra cost, extra trouble and extra time, and the minister would have to find some extra resources for that committee to do it.
It just would not be possible to do the work otherwise; but even if the resources were available it just would not make sense
to use the resources and get the committee to do it if it was not to follow whatever the recommendations might be that would
come out of that committee.
I will leave it at that, but I do have three very strong reasons to have a great interest in this. A significant part of the River
Murray is in the electorate of Stuart. This is a statewide issue, and as a member of the Natural Resources Committee—and I
do take my participation on that committee extremely seriously, and I know that other members of the committee do too—I
think it is important to have the resources, and it is particularly important, minister, to know that whatever that committee
recommends—and those recommendations would be coming at the tail end of an enormous amount of work by other
people—if it was worth us doing the work, I would like to know that the recommendations would be followed.
SPLASH DAY
A few weeks ago students attended
a combined Splash Carnival with
Blanchetown and Cadell Primary. Morgan competed in their
Blue and Gold house teams against the two other schools. It
was great to see everyone competing and encouraging their
team mates on. The start of the day was a bit cool but by the
end, we were all a little red! After lunch each team enjoyed
some time on the giant inflatable at the pool and then Morgan Gold, Morgan Blue and Blanchetown competed in
the annual milk carton regatta. Morgan Gold team was victorious ahead of Blue and then Blanchetown. Results
for the day saw Cadell the winning school ahead of Morgan Blue, Blanchetown and Morgan Gold.
YOUNG LEADERS/OVERNIGHT EXCURSION
Mid March saw the Year Seven students head off early in the morning to
Morphettville Racecourse for the annual Leadership Day. They
participated in a variety of leadership activities and interacted with
students from other schools.
The rest of the school (Reception to Year 6) left a little later for Adelaide
the same day. Their first stop was the Botanical Gardens for an
interesting tour and talk on trees and seeds and they were shown which
sticks aboriginals would have used to make fire. Next stop was the
Museum to experience the Backyard Adventures Exhibit. Students
participated in a variety of fun games and activities associated with insects, plants and vegetables. Later the Year
7‘s met up with the rest of the school at Glenelg beach where they were able to splash in the water, build some
sandcastles and participate in some beach games and races
(their practice for sports day!). Alicia Patton was the winner of
the sandcastle comp with a well crafted whale. After setting up
at Warradale Urban Camp, they headed off to Charlie‘s Diner
for tea. From the comments made at assembly, this was a real
winner!
Day 2 the school saw a fringe performance called ―Rosy Nose
and the Suitcase‖ before the school split up. Rec to Yr 3 went
to the zoo and the Yr 4 – 7‘s went to Adelaide Oval to the
Redbacks game. After watching for a while, the students were
able to have a hit of cricket amongst themselves on the oval
before their journey back to Morgan.
ACTIVE AFTER SCHOOL SPORT
Students were off to the Mobile Fun Box recently with their bikes and scooters for some fun on the Fun Box which
is supplied by Mid Murray Council. It rotates between the towns constantly. Everybody enjoyed getting ―air‖ up the
ramps – lucky we have bandaids though!
HARMONY DAY/ NATIONAL NO BULLYING DAY
Each class participated in Harmony day activities and the whole school came together to discuss the ―No
Bullying‖ and talk about how to incorporate the school values in school time to make Morgan Primary a safe,
caring and friendly environment.
HEALTHY LUNCH/BREAKFAST DAYS
Our CPS Worker Renee, continues to whip up yummy pancakes for
