Further studies commenced in2005 after which it was adopted by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) whowanted one single global standard for mobile phones.LTE, commonly known as 4G (fourth-generation mobile phone communication), hasbeen introduced in more than 85 countries across the world, starting in Oslo (Norway)and Stockholm (Sweden) on 14 December 2009.LTE has been commercially available since 2011 when the first 4G smartphones werereleased for sale.Fast, Effective CoverageLTE/4G is based on 3 different frequencies – 2.6GHz, 1.8GHz and recently 800MHz. By2015 it will be extended to also include 700MHz.The 800MHz band is a more attractive option than using 1800 and 2600MHz becausethe signals propagate further through buildings and over a greater distance. This meansTelco operators are able to provide better coverage using fewer transmitters.In urban areas, the 1800 and 2600MHz bands are used in conjunction with 800MHz byemploying Pico and Femtocell. These are located in shopping centres and other areasfeaturing high foot fall to ensure maximum coverage and enable Telco’s provide localisedhot spots.LTE/4G is normally considered to be four times faster than 3G services currently inwidespread use. LTE/4G features a ‘downlink’ peak data rate of 300Mbit/second and an‘uplink’ peak data rate of 75Mbit/second. LTE signals support scalable carrier bandwidthsbetween 1.4 to 20MHz and use Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) which means ittransmits and receives on slightly different carrier frequencies – making it possible tosend and receive simultaneously.In the 800MHz band, channels 61 to 68 are split into an ‘uplink’ and a ‘downlink’. Thedownlink operates at 791 MHz up to 821 MHz, leaving just a 1MHZ band guard betweenthe TV signals and the 4G mobile signals. The uplink frequencies start at 832 MHz up to862 MHz allowing an 11 MHz band guard between the bands. The frequency bands aresplit into 2 x 30MHz slots, with each of these being split still further into 6 x 5MHz slots,which are sold in corresponding ‘uplink and ‘downlink’ pairs labelled (for example) D1-D6and U1-U6, where D1 and U1 are sold as a pair.Triax focuses mainly on Band 20 – or UMTSLTE800EU to give its full title. The digitaldata streams aretransferred via the transceiver interface by Cat-5 cable oroptical fibre, as such the input and output modules canbe located far apart from each other; no data is lost indigital optical transmission. Within the system the coaxoutput signals can be combined in the usual manner viaa combiner. The HF output level of the integrated TDXoutput amplifier can be software-adjusted withinthe range 85 dBμV through 103 dBμV.Energy Friendly andlong term reliabilityCompared with similar systems, the TDX-Headend usesconsiderably less power. A fully loaded headend with 16tuners and 6x4 QAM outputs (that equates to approx.100 programs) consumes no more than 0.2 kW. Cable managementThe metal covering which is integrated into the housingcan be removed after opening the door. Allconfigurated data are stored on the integrated SDcard, thus newly installed modules are immediatelyrecognised and configured properly.
