SECTION III.DEFINITIONSWhenever used in this Basic Agreement, unless otherwise provided:A. APPRENTICE - shall be defined as an ARTIST who has been so designated by the EMPLOYERin the Individual Artist’s Contract for Employment and/or the public announcements, programsand other literature issued by the EMPLOYER. Except as explicitly provided in thissubparagraph, all terms and conditions <strong>of</strong> this contract shall apply to Apprentices:1) There shall be no more than eight (8) Apprentices;2) Apprenticeship shall be no longer than two (2) contract years in length;3) Apprentices can be renewed only once and there will be a difference between the rate <strong>of</strong> payfor first year apprentices from that <strong>of</strong> second year apprentices. After the Apprentice hascompleted his/her second Apprentice Year with BSJ, then he/she upon reengagement will be<strong>of</strong>fered no less than a First-Year Dancer individual employment contract for his/her thirdcontract year <strong>of</strong> employment;4) Apprentice shall be assigned performance responsibilities only in roles equivalent, but notsuperior to corps roles. BSJ will advise all guest choreographers <strong>of</strong> this provision;5) If at any time an Apprentice is cast to perform a solo role or higher such BSJ shallcompensate the Apprentice:a) the In-Studio Rehearsal Company Member rate for each week such Apprentice rehearsessuch a role andb) the In-Theatre Rehearsal/Performance Company Member rate for each week suchApprentice performs such a role.6) Whenever BSJ casts an APPRENTICE for a solo ROLE or higher (role) BSJ shall contactAGMA in writing no later than forty-eight (48) hours after such casting is assigned. BSJ shallput $100 into the Career Transition Fund for each such role cast for which AGMA did notreceive such a notice.7) BSJ may cast each APPRENTICE in a solo or higher role one (1) time during his/her two (2)year Apprenticeship without additional compensation set forth in paragraph 5 above.8) Any controversy which may arise over the appropriateness <strong>of</strong> any role assigned to anApprentice pursuant to this Section shall be referred to Joint Committee for discussion.9) Once a Dancer is engaged as a Company Member they can no longer be engaged as anApprentice.17
