MINNECHAUG SWIM AND TENNIS CLUB
SPRING 2010 NEWSLETTER
Presidents Message: As I sit down to write this message, I cannot help but reflect on the past while
thinking of the future when it comes to the Club. I know from a personal perspective I think of all the good times my family
and I have experienced at the Club over the years, from swim lessons, swim team, tennis lessons, family fun nights, pre-teen
nights, adult socials and just taking a cool dip on a hot July day. Before we know it, the Club will be back open for another
season and I hope to have similar experiences and memories. I do not, however, take for granted that the Club is a
“cooperative club” and having all these enjoyable experiences is the fruit of the labor and time of my fellow Board members
who put in countless volunteer hours. I must say that I was some what skeptical last fall when making the pitch for folks to
consider stepping up and volunteering for several Board position vacancies, but was pleasantly surprised with the quick and
energetic responses by members filling all of those vacancies. Therefore, I cannot go any further without expressing my
personal appreciation to my fellow Board members, as without you, and those who came before you, the memories may not
have even occurred or continue to occur—thank you!
A special welcome to all our new members! You have much to look forward to at the Club. I hope your Minnechaug
experience is everything that you had hoped for and I look forward to meeting you all.
In terms of thinking of the future, as noted in an earlier E-mail I sent out, I am pleased to announce we have Mike Crean, a
local school teacher at Hopewell Elementary, coming on board as our new Pool Director. Besides having observed firsthand
Mike’s energetic passion and dedication at Hopewell (he is like the Pied Piper the way the kids follow him around school – “Mr.
Crean” the scream), the Board was impressed by his interview and qualifications. Mike subsequently impressed us
volunteering his time to participate in the guard interviews this winter with Gina Raymond. I know Mike is eager to meet you
all and become a part of the Minnechaug family, and I hope you all get to know him. (More on Mike Crean in my interview to
follow herein.)
I am pleased to announce that Sue Husta will be coming back as head Swim Team Coach to lead our Makos to another
championship. We will have new co-head head life guards by Kathryn Hobert and Joe Dixon. Shaun Keane will be returning
as Head Tennis Pro, with Sr. Tennis Assistant Joe Dorman, and Tennis Assistants Kevin Demers and Jared Stratos. Glenn
Horowitz and Tim Fayed will be teaching adult tennis clinics.
Speaking more about the future, I am also pleased that the “Strategic Planning” Committee was formed (composed of Kim
Malz, Tom Mangiafico, Robert Elovich,
Andy Harris, Brian Jonas, Phil Spinella, Nelson Correa and myself) and has been busy at work and have much to do in the
coming months (i.e., meeting with architects, builders, evaluating financing options, etc…). While nothing is set in stone, the
Committee is hard at work on plans to either build brand new Clubhouse or substantially renovate the existing building,
perhaps closer to the tennis courts so things are more balanced in terms of the use and access by both the tennis oriented
members as well as pool oriented members. Please feel free to chat with any of us regarding these plans. More to follow on
this project with the ambitious goal of having something to present to the membership perhaps as early as June or July.
Lastly, as noted below, the Club opens on Saturday, May 29th. To help get ready for the opening, we will have the annual
Spring Cleanup days for the pool, buildings & grounds on Saturday May 1st 8:00 a.m.to 4:00 p.m., and tennis on Saturday, May
1st from 8:00 a.m. to noon. Sunday the 2nd will serve as a rain date for
tennis. As always, we need the assistance and help of our members in getting the Club ready for opening, and this
is a great opportunity to get in some of your annual work hours. Remember, each member family is expected to put
in a minimum of 8 hours.
Looking forward to another great Minnechaug Season!
Regards,
Bob Kaelin, Club President President@minnechaug.org

2024520v1
WHO IS THIS NEW CLUB DIRECTOR MIKE CREAN?
(Interview by Bob Kaelin)
Q. Where did you grow up?
A. I grew up here in Town; I went to Hopewell Elementary School and Gideon Welles Middle School.
I then went to Xavier High School in Middletown, followed by college at Holy Cross in
Massachusetts.
Q. What is your current occupation?
A. I am a 4 th Grade Teacher at Hopewell Elementary School.
Q. How long have you been a teacher?
A. 6 years.
Q. Why were you interested in becoming the Minnechaug Pool Director?
A. I had such great experiences attending the various Pool Clubs here in Town and working as a life
guard and head guard at Woodledge. When I heard this position was available, I was excited
about the opportunity to try to become involved in a Pool Club once again. Also, given my
friendship with all the other Pool Directors in Town, this opening really peeked my interest.
Q. So which other Pool Directors do you know?
A. I’m personally good friends with all of them: John Briody at Woodledge; Jason Lamay at Orchard
Hill; and Ben Weir at Pinebrook. I think between the four of us, we can share experiences and
ideas that can benefit all the Clubs and build some great camaraderie between the Clubs.
Perhaps we can come some “challenge” events between the Clubs, other than just swim meets.
Q. What is your favorite memory of being the head guard at Woodledge Pool Club?
A. My favorite memories are of the Teen Nights that I coordinated twice a month on Friday nights
and our annual “Family Nights.”
Q. Is there anything in particular that you are interested in doing with the kids at Minnechaug this
summer?
A. There are actually lots of ideas I have been thinking of, from water polo to water aerobics. I like
the idea of coordinating some story time (hours) for the younger kids, and perhaps some
basketball activities for others. I have a lot of ideas, but will need to see how much interest there
is by the members. Being new to the Club, I need to take things slow and get to know folks and
where their interests lie.
Q. What are you most excited about in terms of taking on this new type of summer position?
A. I am always looking for new challenges and am really excited about taking on this new leadership
role for Minnechaug. I look forward to working with the guards, particularly having participated in
the interview process. It looks like we a great group of kids coming on board this summer. Being
new to the Club, and knowing you had a Pool Director who had been there for many years, I am
anxious to get to know personally the members and build a relationship with as many of them as
possible, particularly since I live here in Town.
Q. Do you have any favorite hobbies?
A. I have a lot of things I’m involved in. I enjoy painting and playing music, mountain biking and
sports. I played division I soccer in college and continue to train and coach kids of various ages. I
play basketball in our Town league.
Q. Last question, do you have a preference in terms of how you want to be addressed at the Club?
A. Not particularly. The kids who know me from School can simply call me Mr. Crean or Mr. C. If
they like, the parents and older kids can call me Mike.
Thanks for your time Mike, and on behalf of the Board, we look forward to a great summer ahead with you as
our new Club Director.

YEARBOOK
Yearbooks will be available for pickup in the guard office. Please read the bylaws and rules of the club when you receive it.
Members are responsible for adhering to the bylaws and rules as outlined in the yearbook. Also we once again have ads in the
directory to subsidize the cost of mailing and printing. We would like to thank all those who advertised with us this year and
ask that you patronize these businesses.
How to Sign up for Work and Submit/Track Your Hours
1. When a work job notice goes out, you can visit the web site (www.minnechaug.org) to sign up! We have added an
application to the site to make signing up for jobs much easier. Instructions for using the application are on the site.
2. As always, please bring a work form to the job. You still need to have the work coordinator sign the form. Please
submit signed forms to the Treasurer. Please note that it is your responsibility to bring your own form to your
work job and to submit a signed copy to the Treasurer. For your convenience, we are including copies of the form
in both our Spring and Fall newsletters and on the web site. Getting a form is easier than ever!
3. The sign up sheet on the web will be cross-referenced against signed, submitted work forms and your work hour
balance will be posted online so that you can track what the club thinks you have done. If you don't agree with what
the club thinks, you can contact the Vice President or the Treasurer. Here's an important tip about submitting the
form: keep your original and submit a copy. That way, if there is a problem with anything you have submitted, you
can resubmit a copy.
4. We will be asking work coordinators to bring a sign in sheet to any work event so that there is a record of your
attendance. Don't forget to sign in!!! We want you to get credit for your hard work!!!
5. If you are short of your work hour commitment, you will receive an e-mail from the Treasurer on November 15 th
reminding you to submit your signed forms no later than December 1 st . Again, keep those signed originals handy, just
in case your account is inaccurate!!
6. Signed work forms are due no later than December 1 st .
7. Families that have work hour balances OR who complete their work but do not submit signed forms by December
first will be assessed a work fee as part of their annual dues. If you did your work, get that form in!!! We want you
to get credit much more than we want to assess a fee!
Again, we know how hard everyone works at the club and we want everyone to get the credit for their valued efforts. We
hope we have greatly simplified the work hour tracking process! If you have suggestions to make it even better, we'd love
your input! Please contact the Vice President. Please note, however, that because we are providing members with the tools
to easily submit the forms prior to December 1st and we are giving folks several ways to know their work hour totals well
prior to December 1st, the fee will be non-negotiable.
Questions or concerns about the work policy can be submitted to the Vice President.
Special thanks to the folks on the Board who set up the application!
Membership Summary
Here's hoping that by the time you read this, the rainy days of spring are a thing of the past and swimming and tennis are not
such a distant reality!
The Club is at capacity for membership as I write this; please join me in welcoming 23 new families to Minnechaug this
season. If you are a new member, you will be receiving an invitation to the Newcomer's Social, which will be held at the club
on Sunday, June 13 from 12:00-2:00.
You should have received a yearbook update form with your annual invoice this year. If you have changes or updates to your
family information, you may also communicate them to me via email at membership@minnechaug.org.

I am looking forward to seeing you poolside!
Kara Nelson, Membership Chair
2024520v1
From The Building Committee
Welcome back to Minnechaug Pool and Tennis!. For 2010 we want to make the buildings shine! They are in need of some
attention.
Last year we painted the outside of the building so this year we will power wash, clean, spackle where needed, paint to do
touch ups, paint the decks and do what ever else is needed. Mark your calendars for May 1st clean up, we need volunteers to
help us. This is a great opportunity to get some your work job completed. If you have any questions regarding the buildings,
please feel free to email us at buildings@minnechaug.org.
As a last note, due to great feedback and high demand, free WIFI will be back! We think that the wireless internet
connection was well accepted last year.
Social Summary
We have a great social schedule for this summer. Thanks to everyone that has already agreed to chair an event………this
makes for a much smoother summer! We are sticking with the Minnechaug favorites, such as Schools out Party, Family
Splash, and Labor Day party with a DJ. The Adult Social will be on August 24 and sure to be lots of fun, so book your
babysitters now. Some of the themes being considered are a clam bake, flamenco night, or disco eighties theme. We are
bringing back Family Movie Night and possibly a kid’s talent show. There are two pre-teen and teen nights planned that are
sure to be well attended with lots of music and fun. For the new members, we hope that you will join us on Sunday afternoon,
June 13 for pizza and to get acquainted with the club. We are looking forward to this season. Feel free to contact us with any
ideas or suggestions.
Heidi and Anne
MINNECHAUG TENNIS FACILITIES
Putnam Tennis will soon be preparing the Minnechaug courts for the season. They will scrape off last year's layer
of clay replacing it with new, livelier Har-Tru clay. They will roll the courts and install the nets and lines. Barring
wet weather, we expect the courts to be ready by/before April 26. As always, we will need volunteers to hang
the windscreens and court signage, install the net-post baskets and courtside benches,..etc This is an excellent
opportunity for families to complete half of their 2010 Work Job.
Please mark Saturday May 1st on your calendar for this work. From 8 am to 12 noon.
Please e-mail me at tennisfacilities@minnechaug.org if you have any questions.
To provide each child with the opportunity to participate in swim lessons, we will guarantee
each child two swim lesson sessions during the summer. We will try to accommodate all
members with additional lessons, but, due to the number of participants, we may not be
Swimmers (ages 5 – 7) who are able to swim one length of the pool and who show a strong interest in the
Swim team practice will begin on Monday, June 21st. Practice times are the same as last year:
11:45 - 1:00PM Yellow and Green Swim Teams: New swimmers and all 10 & under swimmers
TO THEIR ABILITY LEVEL TO A DIFFERENT SESSION.
The Green Swim Team will start the same day as the Blue and Yellow Swim Teams (6/21) and run until the
last week of July or 8/7 depending on the swimmer’s ability and development throughout the summer. All
Green Swim Team members will swim in at least two home swim meets and depending on the number of
swimmers and ability on 8/7 (Championships).
We will be getting a new swim suit for this summer. So, ALL swim team members will need to purchase the
team suit and yellow Minnechaug bathing cap. Metro Swim Shop will be at the pool from 4:30 – 5:45 on
Monday June 21. If you are unable to make this time, please make plans with a friend to pick up your suit and
cap.
If you are interested in joining the team, please fill out and return the attached registration form to Coach
Husta by May 10th. The sooner you mail it the better. We will be utilizing a new computer system this
summer and need everyone to get the registration form in as soon as possible. If you have any questions or
comments about the swim team call Okie Charla (Swim Team Coordinator) at 430-9357.
A Note from the Coach –
I am looking forward to another great summer at Minnechaug. We are fortunate to have Kyle Munns back as
our Assistant Coach. Unfortunately, Kelsey Haught, will not be returning this summer. She will be greatly
missed. We are very lucky to have another Mako take her place— Courtney Bogue. Courtney is currently
attending Clarion University and is continuing her swimming career. She set the school record in the 100yd
Backstroke last year as a freshman! Her strong knowledge of stroke mechanics will be a great asset!
We had another great summer, losing only to Glastonbury Park and Recreation and winning Championships.
Our team, unlike all the other teams in our league, does not have an association with a winter team that can
funnel swimmers to Minnechaug. We have to rely on word of mouth. So, please, if you have enjoyed the
swimming experience at Minnechaug, be sure to talk it up with your friends. Lastly, try to get into a spring
stroke clinic so you are ready for the season to start!!!
2024520v1

This summer we will continue with dry land exercises. I will once again be getting new music (If you want to
put together a CD of your own be sure that the lyrics are appropriate). Additionally, please purchase a
stretchy cord and bring it to practice.
This summer we are going to continue to focus on improving individual stroke mechanics and having fun. If
you can commit to at least 5 out of 7 weeks, 3-4 (preferably 4) days a week and swim at least one lap of the
pool three times or one lap for the Green Team, come on down to the pool. We look forward to starting
swimming at Minnechaug!!!
the meets, parents of all swimmers (except the Green Team) will be required to sign up and work at least 2
meets during the season. Failure to fulfill this commitment will result in a $50 fine. This is a commitment
that parents must accept in writing before their child will be allowed to attend their 1 st practice. Work
assignments consist of timers, runners, scorers, ribbon writers, a starter and an official. A list of swim team
work jobs will be posted at the start of the season on the bulletin board.
If you sign up for a swim meet and are unable to fulfill that obligation, please make arrangements to have
someone fill that position.
Thank you in advance for your commitment and assistance with the swim team. This is a truly rewarding
