MINNECHAUG SWIM AND TENNIS CLUB
SPRING 2007 NEWSLETTER
Presidents Message: Spring is just around the corner and I’d like to welcome back all returning
members and look forward to meeting new members. Your Board has been meeting monthly since the
Annual Meeting in November in an effort to be ready for a smooth club opening. For those of you who
missed the Annual Meeting, the decision was made not to raise annual dues for 2008. This was not a
unanimous decision but was done because of last year’s larger than normal dues increase and to force
fiscal self-discipline in a time of rising costs and a tough economy. As a consequence, we are running on
a strict budget this year and encourage all members to make best efforts to complete their work jobs and
pitch in where necessary to help keep costs even. We are, after all, a cooperative club and rely on
member help to maintain the facility and organize our swim, tennis and social programs.
The most significant capital project this year will be the reconstruction of the kiddie pool which
has cracked badly just below the waterline. The company that re-built the pool walls on the big pool last
year will be starting work on the kiddie pool soon. Additional items for 2008 include a new roller for the
tennis courts, some lighting improvements, and work on the tennis sprinklers. There is a wish list of other
items for the club but the priority this year and last has been to correct the structural problems with the
pools so that we can move on to some more noticeable improvements next year.
This is a big year for pool programs because Minnechaug is hosting the league swim
championships on August 2. More to come on this but we will need plenty of volunteers to help manage
what will be a very large crowd. Ron Anderson will be returning s our Pool Director and Anna Kopec
has agreed to serve as head guard. Sue Husta will also be returning as head swim coach and we are
planning to offer diving instruction again. On the tennis front, Shaun Keane will be head pro for the
Junior program with Tim Fayed, Jamie Sussman and Joe Dorman assisting. Adult clinic programs with
Glenn Horowitz will be announced soon and there will be an exciting new preseason clinic with Keith
Perron in May for adults and juniors.
To get the club ready for opening, we will have Spring clean up days on May 3 rd and 4 th from
8:00 to 4:00 and May 10 th from 8:00 to 12:00. We are asking that each family RSVP to Jim Thorsen,
Craig Larsen, Tom Fayed or Robert Elovich as outlined in the Spring clean up section of the newsletter so
that manpower can be scheduled for necessary projects. These will include some painting, leaf clean-up,
light landscaping and tennis court set-up.
Yearbooks should be ready for mailing by May 15. This will include a list of members, club
rules and the schedule for pool sitting. We are also working on a new and improved website that should
be operating by pool opening. If you think there are features missing from the website that should be
added, please let me know.
Finally, I’d like to ask that members who have not already done so consider serving on the Board
as an officer or committee member. Long-time members will recall that I served as president for two
years approximately ten years ago when we rehabilitated the clubhouse. Most recently, Nancy Martin
served as president for three years, which was above and beyond the call of duty. It is important to have
new blood on the Board and this is a good time to volunteer because important decisions need to be made
about such things as replacing the clubhouse, expanding our parking area, improving the play area and
perhaps adding some permanent structures to both the picnic and tennis areas. These projects need
planning and are a lot more exciting than fixing the pool walls. The pay stinks but new Board members
will have an opportunity to shape and prioritize these projects. Please let me know if you are interested in
serving.
Best regards,
David A. Haught

Membership Summary
Sun Filled Greetings to Everyone!
Think Summer! Our Minnechaug membership
continues to be full. We are welcoming
approximately 25 new families this year.
If at anytime you have an address or email
change please call or email me and I will take
care of it on our master list. I prefer to be
reached at malzfamily@cox.net or can be
phoned at 650-4878.
I wish our tennis and swim team a successful
season…dig deep and go hard!
Kind Regards,
Kim Malz
Membership Chairperson
From The Building Committee
AS LORENZO LAMAS (DONE BY BILLY
CRYSTAL) SAID,
"Looking Good is Much More Important than
Feeling Good!"
Such is the status of our buildings. We are
fighting the signs of aging and abuse, much
like its baby boomers entrusted to care for
them. 2007 was a year that we made a
number of cosmetic improvements, and I like
to delude myself into believing that most
were happy with what was done. The
underlying structures are not in total
disrepair, but they are in need of some
attention in near out years. For 2008, we will
continue to make things look as good as we
can, which does help their overall health. We
are going to repair some of the cosmetic
issues in the bathrooms before they become
bigger structural issues - some spackle (great
word, indicative of what it is - unlike speckle,
which is a big word for something small, but I
digress), Plexiglas to deflect some water,
some caulking and painting. We will also
attempt to do a new coat of paint on the
outside of the building, the deck (again) and
some other areas. For that, we will need some
luke warm, at minimum, bodies, and hopefully
some people who have no fear of heights and
some understanding of drywall and can use a
caulk gun without hurting themselves, or more
importantly, me. We have the cleanup
weekends, and I will continue the fine
tradition of pizza and libations on weeknights
to bribe you to help. Of course, feel free to
use the club's needs as potential punishment
for your capable children - "You better clean
that room Mister or you will be a spacklin'!"
Not my concern, and it gets you your work job
hours.
I am also open for any ideas you have for the
buildings - personally, I would like some level
of creativity to our look - be bold! be free!
I look forward to seeing you all again, and the
new people, who we will push the crappier jobs
on! - Craig Larsen
Social Summary
As this newsletter goes out, we are still
looking for a member or members to
volunteer and become a social committee
chair or co-chair. We have a tentative
schedule of events. These events can be done
as layed out or events can be added/deleted.
Heidi Hobert and Cathy Reynolds, social
chairs from last year have put together
documents for each of the events on the
social calendar indicating what needs to be
done for each event, including how many
workers, how much food, etc. They have also
recruited some members to already be chairs
for some of the individual events. Thanks to
everyone that has already agreed to chair an
event…..this makes for a much smoother
summer!

Social Summary Continued
We appreciate all of the help we received
from you in the past. Please consider joining
the Board as social chair/co-chair so that we
can have social events at the club. If you are
interested in the position please contact
David Haught or Nancy Martin.
MINNECHAUG TENNIS
FACILITIES
(2008 Committee: Ken Dorros, Tim
Fromson and Tom Fayed)
New for 2008 is a bigger and better Tennis
Roller. It will do a better job of rolling the
five clay courts than our old machine To
accommodate this new roller, two of the
existing gates will need to be widened.
Once again, Putnam Tennis will be
preparing our courts for the season. They
will scrape off last year’s old layer of clay
and spread new, livelier Har-Tru clay. They
will roll the courts and install the nets and
lines.
Weather permitting, we expect the courts to
be ready by May 2 nd .
Please mark Sat. May 3 and Sunday May 4 (
8am to 12 noon) on your calendars.
We need volunteers to hang the windscreens
and court signage, install the net-post
baskets and courtside benches...etc.
This is an excellent opportunity to get half
your 2008 Work Job completed.
Please feel free to call Tom Fayed 657-3761
with any questions regarding the tennis
facilities.
POOL SITTING
The master pool sitting list will be emailed
to everyone and be passed out
with the club directory. It is up to each
of you to fulfill your commitment for this
critical role.
Please keep in mind the following rules
with regard to pool sitting:
• There will be one member present
during the pool sitting period who
is 21 years of age or older, who
for the majority of the pool
sitting period, will remain
physically in the pool area.
• Taking into consideration the
proximity of neighbors, no live or
excessively loud entertainment,
(e.g. DJs, Open Mic, Karaoke) is
allowed at the Club at any time;
other than at Club sponsored
social events. Violators will be
subject to a fine up to $250 as
determined by the Board of
Directors.

Minnechaug Makos Swim Team
ABOUT THE TEAM – The Minnechaug Makos Swim Team provides a positive fun experience for all
levels of swimmers. We encourage all kids up to age 17 to participate. No prior experience is
necessary! The only requirement is that a child be able to swim the length of the pool (25 yards) at
least 3 times without a break. . Swimmers (ages 5 – 7) who are able to swim one length of the pool
and who show a strong interest in the swim team, should join the Green Swim Team. This team will
take the place of Mini-Makos.
Swim team practice will begin on Wednesday, June 18 th . Practice times are the same as last year:
10:15 – 11:45AM Blue SwimTeam: 11 and older swimmers
11:45 - 1:00PM Yellow and Green SwimTeams: New swimmers and all 10 & under swimmers
4:30 - 5:30PM Any swimmer who missed the morning session
AT THE DISCRETION OF COACH HUSTA, SWIMMERS MAY BE MOVED ACCORDING TO THEIR
ABILITY LEVEL TO A DIFFERENT SESSION.
The Green Swim Team will start the same day as the Blue and Yellow Swim Teams (6/18) and run until
the last week of July or 8/2 depending on the swimmer’s ability and development throughout the
summer. All Green Swim Team members will swim in the home swim meet on 7/15 and depending on the
number of swimmers and ability on 7/30 or 8/2 (Championships).
We will be getting a new swim suit for this summer. All swim team members need to purchase a new
suit and yellow bathing cap. Metro Swim Shop will be at the pool from 4:30 – 5:45 on Tuesday June 17.
If you are interested in joining the team, please fill out and return the attached registration form to
Coach Husta by May 20 th . The sooner you mail it the better. That way it won’t get filed and
forgotten!! If you have any questions or comments about the swim team call Ellen Cannon at 228-4361.
A Note From the Coach – I’m sure looking forward to this summer and my 9 th season as Head Swim
Coach at Minnechaug! We had another wonderful summer in 2007. We went undefeated and won the
League Championships by 70 points again defeating Old Saybrook! At Championships we had 65% best
times, 19 first place finishes, 7 team records and 1 Championship record by set by the Boys 17/U 200
yd Freestyle Relay; Elliott Mitchell, Corey Hedges, Teddy Swanson and Robby Husta. It is hard to
believe that we have won three Championships in a row and have gone four seasons undefeated in dual
meets. This would not have been possible without the dedication of both our swimmers and their
parents who have planned vacations around our meets and have carted our swimmers to all meets. As a
swim coach, the most awarding aspect of the last few seasons is the number of swimmers who have
decided to swim in the winter as well. Our team unlike all the other teams does not have an association
with a winter team that could funnel swimmers to Minnechaug. We have to rely on word of mouth. So,
please if you have enjoyed the swimming experience at Minnechaug be sure to talk it up with your
friends. Lastly, try to get into a spring stroke clinic so you are ready for the season to start!!!

This summer we will continue with dry land exercises. I will be getting new music (If you want to put
together a CD of your own be sure that the lyrics are appropriate) and will purchase another new CD
player – please help me keep this one out of the rain! Please purchase a stretchy cord and bring it to
practice. Our theme for the summer will be the Beijing Olympic Games. Our Minnechaug Mileage Club
will be swimming to Beijing! If you can think of any other ways we can incorporate this into our season
let me know.
This summer we are going to continue to focus on improving individual stroke mechanics and having fun.
If you can commit to at least 5 out of 7 weeks, 3-4 (preferably 4) days a week and swim at least one
lap of the pool three times or one lap for the Green Team, come on down to the pool. We look forward
to starting swimming at Minnechaug!!!
A Note to the Parents – As you all know, the swim meets are run by parent volunteers. To adequately
staff the meets, parents of all swimmers (except the Green Team) will be required to sign up and work
at least 3 meets during the season. Failure to fulfill this commitment will result in a $50 fine. This is
commitment that parents must accept in writing before their child will be allowed to attend their 1 st
practice. Work assignments consist of timers, runners, scorers, ribbon writers, a starter and an
official. A list of swim team work jobs will be posted at the start of the season on the bulletin board.
If you sign up for a swim meet and are unable to fulfill that obligation, please make arrangements to
have someone fill that position.
For anyone who is unable to work swim meets we do have number of other jobs this year to fulfill your
swim team work job and most of these will also fulfill your pool work job as well.
Concessions Coordinator – organizes volunteers, purchases supplies, monitors concessions during home
meets (not Championships). Fulfills 8 hour pool and swim team work job
Swim Team Party Coordinator – organizes volunteers, purchases, sets up and runs kick-off party in
June and Awards Banquet in August. Fulfills 8 hour pool and swim team work job.
Awards – purchase ribbons, trophies, organize volunteers during and after meets to fill out ribbons.
Fulfills 8 hour pool and swim team work job.
Meet Timer Coordinator – organizes timers for meets, assists timers during meets, monitors switch
of timers in middle of meet, distributes and collect watches. Fulfills swim team work job.
Please call Ellen at 228-4361 if you would like to volunteer for one of these positions. Thank you for
your commitment and assistance with the swim team. This is a truly rewarding experience for parents
and kids alike! We look forward to seeing you at the meets.
Championships
We also will be hosting Championships this year at our pool club and requiring all parents of swim team
members to assist with this challenging but rewarding event. We are so lucky to have Nanci Licinsky
again coordinating this event for us. She ran our Championship event back in 2002 and it was one of
the best run Championship events ever. We are also excited to have many of the same parents who
worked that event back again volunteering to head the various committees involved. Nanci and Sue will
be holding a Championship meeting on May 7 th at 7pm at the Club for all who have already volunteered
and for all those who are interested in helping with the organization of this event. If you can not
attend and want to help with the organization process please contact Nanci (633-3177).

Of note
Unfortunately Liza Welling will not be returning to work at Minnechaug this summer. She was a long
time member of our swim team when she was younger and then served as a dedicated member of our
coaching staff for many years. Our swim team benefited immensely from the many hours of training
and experience that she passed along to them. She also provided dedicated service to our pool as a
lifeguard and swim instructor. While we will miss her we realize that she has a bright future ahead of
her and wish her the best of luck. We hope she will stop by the pool this summer so we can all pass
along our thanks and good wishes to her.
MINNECHAUG MAKOS SWIM TEAM

Swim Lessons
Swim lesson sessions will be as follows for the summer
Session 1 - June 23 – July 3
Session 2 - July 7 – July 18
Session 3 - July 21 – August 1
Session 4 - August 4 – August 15
Lessons will be 25 minutes in length and run from 9:00 – 10:25 am. The swim program at Minnechaug
continues to grow in popularity every year. To provide each child with an opportunity to participate in
swim lessons, we will guarantee each child two swim lesson sessions during the summer. We will try to
accommodate all members with any additional lessons, but due to the number of participants, we may
not be able to honor all requests for a particular session. We do this to provide each child with the
best possible swim lesson experience. We also request that late day/evening lessons be limited to
children that are not able to attend morning classes. Private lessons will be available for an additional
fee. Sign-ups for the 1 st session will be posted on the poolside bulletin board at 5pm, June 13 th .
Notices announcing signup times for the following sessions will be posted at the pool and emailed to
members. A complete description of the lesson levels will be posted to help you determine the best
level for your child.
Also we are also looking for a Swim Lesson Coordinator. If you are looking for a pool work job that
TENNIS PROGRAMS
Junior Tennis Program
The Junior Tennis Program consists of lessons, team, and pre-team for member children age 5
and up. We are very excited to welcome Shaun Keane as our Head Tennis Professional. Shaun
is a CIAC certified tennis coach. He has coached the boy’s tennis team at RHAM High School
since 2002, and led them to win the NWC Championship in 2006. We welcome back Tim Fayed
and Jamie Sussman to our program, and introduce Joe Dorman, a Glastonbury High School
varsity tennis team player, as our newest tennis assistant.
Each child participating in our Junior Tennis Program needs to bring a can of NEW CLAY
COURT/REGULAR DUTY FELT tennis balls or $3 to their first lesson or practice. All
children also need their own tennis racquet, and soft soled, smooth bottomed tennis shoes.
No running shoes or shoes with uneven soles or ridges are allowed as these quickly damage the
Har-Tru playing surface. No bare feet, open toed or open heeled shoes are allowed for safety
reasons. Players need to complete and submit the enclosed registration form by June 2.
This will help us create the best lesson plans and groups.
Before you get on the courts or take a dip in the pool do you sign your family and guests in? If not, you
are doing a disservice to the Club. These sign in sheets serve as a resource guide for the Board to
determine the wear and tear on the Club and effectively manage the facility. Please remember to sign
in so that we can properly assess the usage of the Club and where we need to focus not only our
