MINNECHAUG SWIM AND TENNIS CLUB
SPRING 2009 NEWSLETTER
President’s Message: Ah, spring has finally arrived, and that means it is almost time for opening the Club. It
means it will soon be time for us to get out our tennis gear and take to the courts. It means it will soon be time to
take the kids to the pool for a casual swim or swim team practice. Moreover, it means it will soon be time for us to
have an opportunity to see some friends we might not have seen much over the winter and more time to relax and
take in the sun by the pool with our families, rather than the news of the day. With the challenging economic times
we have all had to endure for the past six months or so, I am personally looking forward to enjoying some
relaxation time at the Club this summer and hope many of you are equally excited about another Minnechaug
season. A special welcome to all our new members!
As noted below, the Club opens on Saturday, May 23 rd . To help get ready for the opening, we will have the
annual Spring Cleanup days for the pool, buildings & grounds on Saturday & Sunday May 2 nd and 3 rd from 8:00 a.m.
to 4:00 p.m., and tennis on Saturday, May 2 nd from 8:00 a.m. to noon. Sunday the 3 rd will serve as a rain date for
tennis. As always, we need the assistance and help of our members in getting the Club ready for opening, and this
is a great opportunity to get in some of your annual work hours. Remember, each member family is expected to put
in a minimum of 8 hours.
The Club just completed a big season having had the opportunity to host league swim championships, and it
was also nice that Minnechaug won the championships on our home turf. A special thanks and note of recognition to
Nancy Liscinsky and the rest of the Host Committee for an outstanding job and all their hard work. I am pleased
to announce that Ron Anderson will be returning this Season as the Pool Director and Ana Kopec will again be the
head life guard. I am also pleased to announce that Sue Husta will be returning as head Swim Team Coach. Shaun
Keane will be returning as the Head Tennis Pro, with Tim Fayed returning as the Senior Tennis Assistant. Based on
the very helpful feedback from the membership last year, and to be responsive to certain concerns raised by
members, the Board has updated and revised Pool Director Job description along with the Head Tennis Pro and
Tennis Assistant job descriptions. These new job descriptions are available on the website.
Speaking of the website, we have recently updated the site and are always looking for ways to better
improve it. If you have any ideas or experience in designing or maintaining websites, please let me know.
Yearbooks should be mailed out on May 15 th . Before they go to the printer, for returning members, please take a
look at your contact information in last year’s Yearbook to see if you have any revisions. If so, please contact Kara
Nelson at membership@minnechaug.org or Mike Mendoza at secretary@minnechaug.org with those edits by May
1st.
When your Yearbook arrives, I would encourage each member to take a moment and read through our By-
Laws, Rules and Regulations. After all, as the Club’s Mission Statement indicates, the Club is a cooperative and
self-governing non-profit Club. What that means in part is it is incumbent upon all of us to respect the Rules and
Regulations and in part to help enforce the Rules. If you see something being done wrong, feel free to point that
out to the person or report it to a Board member. The Board has received a growing number of complaints about
members failing to sign in their guests. As the Rules indicate, members are more than welcome to bring guests to
the Club (and in fact it is encouraged), provided the sponsoring member signs the guest(s) in the guest book that is
kept at the table as you walk into the pool area and then that sponsoring member is assessed a $3 guest fee.
Apparently this Rule is getting frequently ignored. The Board has chosen not to follow what other Clubs do by
having someone sitting at a check-in desk by the gate and asking for identification (and hence added personnel
costs). Rather, the Board hopes that bringing this issue to everyone’s attention in this Newsletter will be a
sufficient reminder of the Rule and will avoid further complaints. However, while the guest fee will remain at $3

per person (plus tax), after an initial one-time warning, any member failing to sign in a guest this season will now be
assessed a $10 fee (on top of the $3 guest fee).
I’m also pleased to report that we are having Savol, our pool contractor, install a safety vacuum release system and
main drain cover per the requirements of the recently enacted Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act.
While this was an unexpected expenditure, it ensures that our pools will be safe and ready for the start of the
season.
Lastly, while we currently do not have any major capital projects planned or underway, there are a number
of capital improvement projects looming on the very near horizon and probably cannot be neglected or ignored
much longer. As a cooperative Club, the Board is seeking to form in the coming months a Capital Improvements
Committee, which ideally would be made up of several members and Board members to start analyzing these
potential projects and coming up with a strategic plan for dealing with these projects. If you are interested in
being on this Committee, let me know. While the Board is cognizant of the need to keep our dues from increasing
and assessing members, we also need to make sure that the Club is being properly maintained to insure the health,
safety and comfort of the members, as well as keeping the Club a highly desirable Club for new members.
Looking forward to another great Minnechaug Season!
Regards,
Bob Kaelin, Club President President@minnechaug.org
SPRING CLEANUP
In order to have a successful spring cleanup and not be scrambling at the last minute to get things done before the
health inspector knocks at our door, we will be having spring cleanup on the following days:
May 2 nd & May 3 rd – 8am to 4pm (pool, buildings & grounds)
May 2 nd - 8am to 12 noon (tennis), with a rain date of May 3 rd
We are asking that you contact Robert Elovich at grounds@minnechaug.org, Drew Vaughn at
poolfacilities@minnechaug.org, Craig Larsen at buildings@minnechaug.org, or Tom Fayed at
tennisfacilities@minnechaug.org and let them know what day your family plans on attending. This will enable us to
schedule projects accordingly and get things in a timely fashion. Be sure to bring your rakes, tarps, leaf blowers,
shovels to move mulch etc……. Come out and get your work job done before the season starts and you can relax all
summer!!!!! Lastly, don’t forget to get your work job form signed before leaving!!!
YEARBOOK
This year we will be mailing the yearbook out
to all member families. Please read the bylaws
and rules of the club when you receive it.
Members are responsible for adhering to the
bylaws and rules as outlined in the yearbook.
This year we once again have ads in the
directory to subsidize the cost of mailing and
printing. We would like to thank all those who
advertised with us this year and ask that you
patronize these businesses.
Membership Summary
Here's hoping that by the time you read this,
spring will be in full bloom and summer will not
seem like such a distant reality!
As I write this we are nearing capacity for
membership, and will welcome over 25 new
families to the club this season. If you are a
new member you will be receiving an invitation
to the Newcomer's Social, which will be held
at the club on Sunday, May 31st.
Please feel free to send me updates to your
family information, when necessary. You can
email them to me at
membership@minnechaug.org.
I hope this summer holds much sun and fun
for you and your family!
Kara Nelson
Membership Chair
From The Building Committee
Welcome back to Minnechaug Pool and Tennis!
Lots of exciting news from the building
department. Well, OK. Not really exciting, but

hopefully you will continue to read this
anyway.
This year’s big plan is . . . (like the . . .
buildup?) PAINTING THE BUILDING. Our
major endeavor this year will be to get a
fresh coat of paint on the exterior of the
building, in hopes that alone will hold things
together for another few years. From what I
understand, it’s been a number of years, and
the building can certainly use the TLC. We
believe that this will provide our membership
with a bright new (yellowish) outlook on
things.
In addition, we will continue to work on the
inside of the building as well. Some work on
the upstairs is needed, including some
additional lighting - the lighting we have is so
old, we cannot even get replacement parts for
it. We will work on the bathrooms with some
fervor. I have a plan to throw out the rubber
floor mats (which have essentially become
petri dishes over the years) and replace them
with the non-slip strips. This will allow easier
and better cleaning of the bathrooms as well.
In addition, the women's rooms will get some
addition lighting in the shower and changing
areas. We painted last year, and it has held up
relatively well. As we move into the season we
will continue to do the little things to improve
the appearance.
I will also be doing some work on the grill in
order to make it quicker to heat up, and to
make it easier to clean. The grill is a great
way to socialize and get to know your fellow
members. And eat.
Yeah, I know. Exciting stuff. But I like to
believe it is the little things that make a
difference (besides, we don't have the
bankroll to do the big things).
As a last note, due to great feedback and
high demand, free WIFI will be back! We
think that the wireless internet connection
was well accepted last year. We received a
number of comments from members that it
allowed them to work from the pool club, and
spend more time with their families - which is
the goal of any such club. This year, with the
work to the guard house, I hope to be able to
move the main computer down there to
reduce downtime (as well as remove those
hideous wires that were hanging from the
building last year - not my best idea last
year).
The board has had a number of good
meetings, and has a lot of great things on the
docket for this year. We hope that you all
have a great spring, and look forward to
seeing you all when the season opens.
I actually made that sound sincere, didn't I?
Social Summary
The Social Committee is excited to kick off
another summer season at Minnechaug! We
look forward to many of our annual events,
plus a few new ones.
Due to popular demand, we have added two
new Adult Socials … Margarita Madness & A
Wine Tasting Event. What could be better
than kicking off the weekend with a happy
hour poolside!
To all of our future party planners ……. We
will be starting a Teen and Pre-Teen Social
Advisory Committee. The purpose of this
committee is to help in the planning of the
Teen and Pre-Teen Nights, as well as other
events that would be fun for their age
groups. The Advisory Committees will meet
Wednesday evenings on 6/24, 7/1, 7/22, and
7/29. Times are as follows:

6:00 – 7:00 Pre-Teen
7:00 – 8:00 Teen
If your child is interested in participating,
please email social@minnechaug.org.
Not only will this be fun to do, but it’s a
great resume builder!
Thanks to all who have volunteered in the
past and have already stepped up to Chair
Events …. It’s a fun way to get your work
hours out of the way and we are always
looking for volunteers.
MINNECHAUG TENNIS
FACILITIES
(2009 Committee: Ken Dorros, Tim Fromson
and Tom Fayed)
Putnam Tennis will once again be preparing our
courts for the season. They will scrape off
last year's layer of clay replacing it with new,
livelier Har-Tru clay. They will also roll the
courts and install the nets and lines. Barring
wet weather, we expect the courts to ready
by/before April 25.
As always, we will need volunteers to hang the
windscreens and court signage, install the
net-post baskets and courtside benches, etc.
This is an excellent opportunity to complete
half of your 2009 Work Job. Please mark
Saturday May 2 on your calendar for this
work. If you have any questions, please
contact tennisfacilities@minnechaug.org.
We are also planning to replace the white tent
canopy by the tennis courts with a more
permanent structure this year:
- Same location as existing tent canopy
- Structure would consist of posts supporting
a peaked roof. It would be open with no solid
walls at this time
- Roof would contain a few corrugated
skylights for natural lighting
- Floor would be crushed stone which could be
changed to a poured cement slab in the future
- Proposed size would be 24'x30' which can
accommodate 4 picnic tables side-by-side-byside
- Construction would start in early May,
utilizing club member labor to save $2,000
Tom Fayed
POOL SITTING
The master pool sitting list will be mailed out
with the Yearbook in May. It is up to each of
you to fulfill your commitment for this
critical role.
Please keep in mind the following rules with
regard to pool sitting:
• There will be one member present
during the pool sitting period who is
21 years of age or older, who for the
majority of the pool sitting period,
will remain physically in the pool area.
• Taking into consideration the
proximity of neighbors, no live or
excessively loud entertainment, (e.g.
DJs, Open Mic, Karaoke) is allowed at
the Club at any time; other than at
Club sponsored social events. Violators
will be subject to a fine up to $250 as
determined by the Board of
Directors.

Minnechaug Makos Swim Team
ABOUT THE TEAM – The Minnechaug Makos Swim Team provides a positive fun experience for all
levels of swimmers. We encourage all kids through age 17 to participate. No prior experience is
necessary! The only requirement is that a child be able to swim the length of the pool (25 yards) at
least 3 times without a break. Swimmers (ages 5 – 7) who are able to swim one length of the pool and
who show a strong interest in the swim team should join the Green Swim Team.
Swim team practice will begin on Friday, June 19th. Practice times are the same as last year:
10:15 –12:00PM Blue Swim Team: 11 and older swimmers
11:45 - 1:00PM Yellow and Green Swim Teams: New swimmers and all 10 & under swimmers
4:30 - 5:30PM Any swimmer who missed the morning session
AT THE DISCRETION OF COACH HUSTA, SWIMMERS MAY BE MOVED ACCORDING TO
THEIR ABILITY LEVEL TO A DIFFERENT SESSION.
The Green Swim Team will start the same day as the Blue and Yellow Swim Teams (6/19) and run until
the last week of July or 8/1 depending on the swimmer’s ability and development throughout the
summer. All Green Swim Team members will swim in the home swim meet on 7/14 and depending on the
number of swimmers and ability on 7/29 and 8/1 (Championships).
We will NOT be getting a new swim suit for this summer. However, all new swim team
members will need to purchase the team suit and yellow Minnechaug bathing cap. Metro Swim
Shop will be at the pool from 4:30 – 5:45 on Thursday June 18. At this time all returning
team members will have the opportunity to purchase a new suit or cap if needed, as well.
If you are interested in joining the team, please fill out and return the attached registration form to
Coach Husta by May 20th. The sooner you mail it the better. That way it won’t get filed and forgotten!!
If you have any questions or comments about the swim team call Okie Charla (Swim Team Coordinator)
at 430-9357.
A Note from the Coach –
This my 10th Season as Head Swim Coach at Minnechaug!!!! The time has sure flown. Welcome
back. We are fortunate to have both of our Minnechaug Makos Swim Team Assistant
Coaches, Kyle Munns and Kelsey Haught, returning this year. This will make for a very smooth
start to the 2009 swim team season.

We had another great summer, losing only to Glastonbury Park and Recreation and winning the thunder
and lightning shortened Championships. Our team, unlike all the other teams in our league, does not
have an association with a winter team that could funnel swimmers to Minnechaug. We have to rely on
word of mouth. So, please, if you have enjoyed the swimming experience at Minnechaug, be sure to talk
it up with your friends. Lastly, try to get into a spring stroke clinic so you are ready for the season to
start!!!
This summer we will continue with dry land exercises. I will once again be getting new music (If you
want to put together a CD of your own be sure that the lyrics are appropriate). Additionally, please
purchase a stretchy cord and bring it to practice.
This summer we are going to continue to focus on improving individual stroke mechanics and having fun.
If you can commit to at least 5 out of 7 weeks, 3-4 (preferably 4) days a week and swim at least one
lap of the pool three times or one lap for the Green Team, come on down to the pool. We look forward
to starting swimming at Minnechaug!!!
commitment that parents must accept in writing before their child will be allowed to attend their 1 st
official. A list of swim team work jobs will be posted at the start of the season on the bulletin board.
If you sign up for a swim meet and are unable to fulfill that obligation, please make arrangements to
Swim lesson sessions will be as follows for the summer:
Session 1: Monday June 22 – Friday July 3
Session 2: Monday July 6 – Friday July 17
Session 3: Monday July 20 – Friday July 31
Session 4: Monday Aug 3 – Friday Aug 14
Lessons will be 25 minutes in length and run from 9:00-10:25 am. There will also be limited
signups for the afternoon sessions which run from 5:30-6:25 pm. Sessions are two weeks in
length.
To provide each child with the opportunity to participate in swim lessons, we will guarantee
each child two swim lesson sessions during the summer. We will try to accommodate all
members with additional lessons, but, due to the number of participants, we may not be able
to honor all requests for a particular session. We also request that the afternoon sessions be
limited to children who are not able to make the morning sessions. Private lessons are
available for an additional fee.
Signups for the first swim session will be posted on Friday June 12 at 5pm. Stacy Bell is our
Swim Lesson Coordinator and she will be at the pool along with our returning head guard, Ana
Kopec, to answer questions that you may have. A complete description of swim levels will also
be posted to help you determine the best level for your child. Notices announcing the signup
times for all following sessions will be posted at the pool as well as emailed out to members.
Lesson times/instructors will be posted at the club no later than the Friday prior to the start
of the session.
Parents and guardians/babysitters of those swimmers under the age of 12 are required to
stay in the pool area during swim lessons.

TENNIS PROGRAMS
Junior Tennis Program
We are very excited to welcome back Shaun Keane as our Head Tennis Professional, Tim Fayed as our
SeniorTennis Assistant, and Jamie Sussman and Joe Dorman as our Junior Tennis Assistants.
The Junior Tennis Program consists of lessons, team, and pre-team for member children age 5 and up. Each
child participating in our Junior Tennis Program needs to bring a can of NEW CLAY COURT/REGULAR
DUTY FELT tennis balls or $3 to their first lesson or practice. All children also need their own tennis
racquet, and soft soled, smooth bottomed tennis shoes. No running shoes or shoes with uneven soles or ridges
are allowed as these quickly damage the Har-Tru playing surface. No bare feet, open toed or open heeled shoes
are allowed for safety reasons. If your child would like to participate in tennis lessons or team, please complete
and submit the enclosed registration form by June 5.
