WHAT DO YOUHAVE TO DO?The idea is to arrange a clean upcampaign somewhere within the localneighbourhood, separate the materialscollected and dispose of themconsiderately.Step 1 – Planning• Choose a suitable local site e.g. a park, shopping area, school grounds,canal path, commercial forecourts etc.• Decide on a suitable date• Contact the owners (usually the Council) to gain permission to clean up• Put the team together• Visit a disposal tip to check what recycling materials can be disposed ofseparately (would be good to include the clean up team)Step 2 – Obtain clean-up kit pack from regional group• Reflective vests• Safety gloves• Litter-pickers• Refuse sacks – two types (rubbish & recycling)Step 3 – Carry out safety checkMake sure…• all team members have the correct safety equipment• chosen location is away from vehicle traffic• everyone is clear on what NOT to pick up e.g. needles and broken glassStep 4 – Carry out clean-up• Set a time limit e.g. two hours• Ensure that any residents are aware of what’s going on• Stay together… work as a team• Scout leader to make sure the team is putting the correct materials in thecorrect sacks


Did you know?The UK throws out 434 milliontons of waste every year…Enough to fill the Albert Hall inless than two hours.Step 5 – How have we done?• Measure the quantities of collected materials, either by:weighing the sacks, if scales are availableOrcounting the number of each type of sack• Take all collection materials for disposal to the local tip siteStep 6 – Work it outIf weighingTotal weight of rubbish (a) = kgTotal weight of recycling (b) = kgOrIf countingTotal number of rubbish sacks = sacks (full)Total number of recycling sacks = sacks (full)Then …100 x b = % recycling ratea+bDon’t forget!!Record your results by emailing the above details along with your groupname, the location and the date of your clean up campaign toscouts@serco.comP.S.
