That is whywe made quality <strong>and</strong> reliability top priorityin the selection <strong>and</strong> developmentof the system platform componentsas well as in the design of our systemsright from the beginning.Simple design principles<strong>The</strong> design of the <strong>TELEPERM</strong> <strong>XS</strong>system platform was guided by clear<strong>and</strong> comprehensible principles. <strong>The</strong>seinclude in particular the strictly cyclicoperation of the software <strong>and</strong> thecommunication means, the absence ofprocess-controlled interrupts, <strong>and</strong> thehighly st<strong>and</strong>ardized, simple softwarestructure, assured by automatic codegeneration. <strong>The</strong> stringent observanceof these principles not only ensuresmaximum reliability but also makes thestructure <strong>and</strong> operation principles of<strong>TELEPERM</strong> <strong>XS</strong> systems transparent toboth users <strong>and</strong> licensing authorities.Robust hardware components<strong>The</strong> majority of the hardware componentsare series-produced, serviceprovenindustrial components speciallyqualifi cation-tested for use in safety I&Csystems. During the design of the componentsspecially developed for<strong>TELEPERM</strong> <strong>XS</strong>, we paid particularattention to structural simplicity <strong>and</strong>outst<strong>and</strong>ing robustness.Reliable software<strong>The</strong> system software was developedin compliance with the quality <strong>and</strong>design requirements specifi ed in theapplicable international nuclear codes<strong>and</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ards. Thus, all stages in thedevelopment process were performed,documented, reviewed <strong>and</strong> releasedin accordance with the phase modelcalled for in these st<strong>and</strong>ards. <strong>The</strong> inhousetests <strong>and</strong> trials were backed upby independent inspections by externalexperts at all stages of development.<strong>The</strong> system software <strong>and</strong> the application-specific software are strictlyseparated. <strong>The</strong> project specifi c application-specific software is automaticallygenerated from engineering diagrams(hardware architecture <strong>and</strong> functiondiagrams).
