Considering an approximate total of 5,100 ha of sugar cane going into GCH, this wouldrepresent a reduction in the generation of POPs in the order of 0.937 gTEQ/a (0.045 gTEQ/acorresponding to emissions into air and 0.893 gTEQ/a of emissions onto land).Considering the increase in area under BCH due to the expansions at LUSIP and KDDP, andthe reduction of emissions from land moving into GCH at RSSC and Ubombo Sugar estates, the balance indicates a net increase in the order of 1.006 gTEQ/a, which corresponds to a10.9% increase from the baseline indicated in the inventory. Under the scenario where anadditional 17,000 ha will be put under sugar cane at LUSIP and KDDP, the increase in theemission of POPs would be of 23,6% (net increase of 2.187 gTEQ/a).Figure 22:Changes in emission of POPs with increased land under BCH from SCGand increased GCH at mill estatesg TEQ/a1412+21.6 %+10.9 %+33.7 %+23.6 %Baseline108-10.1 %-10.1%w /new lands at LUSIPand KDDP6w /increased GCH42Balance w /increasedarea under sugar caneand increased GCH010,900 ha at LUSIP +KDDP scenario17,000 at LUSIP +KDDP scenarioAn additional 5,800 ha of sugar cane would need to go into GCH only to return to thebaseline levels for emission of POPs.GCH in Ubombo Sugar will most likely be done using mechanical chopper harvesters; thiswould imply a proportional reduction (38%) in labour from cane cutters. As for RSSC theirpreference is for manual green cane cutting, for which they have carried out pilot trials. Asgreen cane cutting is a more strenuous task than manual BCH, cane cutters would have apremium for GCH, which would have to be passed on to the cane cutters by the outsourcingcompany.5.6.4 Options to address the key aspectCane burning being the second source of unintended generation of POPs, <strong>Swaziland</strong> mustmake a commitment, through its NIP, to reduce cane burning.RDMU (<strong>Strategic</strong> Environmental Assessment of the National Adaptation Strategy) - Page 91
