Exhibition: June 11, 1999 - 9£J9.6el1-Cris Raymond, Portfolio EditorIllustration art encompasses many formats. Books, advertisements, corporate logos, limited edition prints, CD coversand many other visual displays impress images on theminds of the public.Perhaps the most fleeting of the thousands of images seenis that of the movie poster. This medium has to conveythe spirit and message of a film and convince the publicto come see the show. When the theater schedulechanges, the posters disappear. Although the movie mayresurface on television, the posters are relegated to historyor to the few loyal and knowledgeable fans of the genrewho collect them as prized items.Drew Struzan's images are universal touchstones inAmerican culture, and his extraordinary skill as a draftsmandefines the look of the contemporary motion-pictureposter with a distinctive blend of realism, stylization andemotion. His paintings for over one hundred fifty moviesincluding Back to the Future, Hook, The Flintstones, StarWars, E. T the Extra-Terrestrial and the Indiana Jonestrilogy have played an important role in the life ofthese films.Struzan recalls that even as a child, he could alwaysdraw and paint. While he was attending the Art CenterCollege of Design in West Los Angeles, his collegeadvisor asked him whether he wanted to concentrateon fine art or illustration, the young Struzan confessedthat he really did not know the difference. He knewthe art of Norman Rockwell but admits that he neverquite made the connection that NR's work was illustration.Given the advice that an illustrator gets paid forhis work and a fine artist doesn't, Struzan quicklydecided on the field of illustration.Today, he comments, "It was simply a matter that I wantedto paint and I knew I had to eat, so I took up illustrationto support myself and my family." He studied classicaldrawing and composition, and put himself throughschool by taking on small commissions. When asked if hehad sought out work in the movie industry, he commentedthat creating movie posters wasn't initially a consideration. After graduation, most of his colleagues went toNew York seeking work in the publishing industry: "Istayed in Los Angeles for one very obvious reason. I wastoo poor to go to New York." The proximity of living nearthe heart of the movie industry had much to do with hisinvolvement in the entertainment field. His early assignmentsincluded the creation of album covers for suchdiverse performers as Tony Orlando and Dawn, Liberace, and Alice Cooper. Eventually, his accomplished techniqueas a portraitist caught the notice of the movie studios.Drew StntzanStruzan readily admits that the high level of image circulationand recognition has made a difference in his career."If Rockwell had painted his pictures just for greetingcards, perhaps people wouldn't have paid as much attention.Publicity has so much do to with success. People6

art director to the producer, director, studio heads andstars. Satisfying all of the parties involved becomes part ofthe challenge. Meanwhile, the deadline for a completedposter can be as brief as one or two weeks from sketchstage to finished piece. His love of art and his dedication to his work is clear."It's like climbing a mountain one step at a time, notrealizing how tall the mountain is. The more you dothe better you get, and the more people trust you.Illustration has taught me that if the artwork doesn'tcommunicate, it has no value."Drew: Art of the Cinema at the Norman RockwellMuseum has been organized to coincide with thenational opening of the long-awaited Hollywood filmEpisode I-The Phantom Menace , the movie prequel toGeorge Lucas's Star Wars . This exhibition of originalcinema art by Drew Struzan includes 51 finished paintingsand 15 preparatory studies.Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, acrylic andprisma on gessoed board, 1989.The exhibition has been curated and assembled by JudyGoffman Cutler, Executive Director, American IllustratorsGallery, New York City; and organized and produced byART Shows and Products Corp.have to be told, 'Look at this! Pay attention. This is reallyworth taking a second look at.'"A young artist draws upon the history of those who camebefore him. "You stand on the shoulders of giants,"Struzan has said. "I learned to draw from Rubens andPontormo. But once you learn your craft, you don't lookat what was done before. Early on I painted my fair shareof Rockwells and Leyendeckers. Eventually you have tobecome yourself, a part of the century you live in.",Struzan begins the process of creating a poster by seeingthe film, reading a script or going over the general conceptthat is provided by the studio. All movies have apre-existing story line and direction. Struzan tries to findthe spirit within, and derive a composition that conveysthe essence of the narrative. After reference materialssuch a movie stills, props and photographic portraits havebeen assembled, the artist does a series of black and whiteidea sketches. These are reviewed by everyone from theE.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, acrylic and prisma ongessoed board, /990.7
