<strong>Lyon</strong> Initiatives 03Major Urban Projectthis <strong>project</strong> will profoundly change the face of the city,while proudly upholding the values of a sustainable andaudacious metropolis.in the <strong>Confluence</strong> districtby the end of 2010.A few restaurants whichhave opened in the<strong>Confluence</strong> are alreadybustling with patrons,paving the way for a trendynew scene in <strong>Lyon</strong>. Onesuch restaurant is Rue LeBec, an all-new concept of2,000 sq. m., designed bythe two-starred chef NicolasLe Bec and featuring amarket-style restaurantsurrounded by differentstalls: a fishmonger,butcher and greengrocer, awine shop, grocery store,coffee bar, cheese cellar,and more. There is also adelicatessen where you cangrab a quick bite to eat, twoclubs for cigar lovers andthe Place Rouge Bar. In thecoming months, about 20restaurants are expected toopen their doors across theentire site, many of themcatering to the clientele ofthe recreational facilities.In December 2009, it wasthe Swiss architect/<strong>urban</strong>planning team Herzog &de Meuron, associated withthe landscape architectMichel Desvigne, that waschosen to develop thesecond phase of the <strong>urban</strong>planning <strong>project</strong>. Theteam will essentially bein charge of implementingthe development planof the 24 hectares of thesoutheastern section ofthe <strong>Confluence</strong> district(including 17 hectares of theformer wholesale markettransferred in January2009 to the outskirts of<strong>Lyon</strong>) and supervisingconstruction of the “MainSquare” extending fromthe marina. In the longterm, the program, withits offices, housing, shopsand local governmentbranches, should leadKey figures of the <strong>project</strong><strong>≥</strong> Surface area: 150 hectares<strong>≥</strong> 600,000 square meters of office space,including 400,000 sq. m. under construction<strong>≥</strong> Net floor area: 1 million sq. m.<strong>≥</strong> Current population: 7,000 inhabitants<strong>≥</strong> Future population: 18,000 inhabitants<strong>≥</strong> Current jobs: 7,000<strong>≥</strong> Future jobs: 27,000to the development ofanother 1 million sq. m.in the <strong>Confluence</strong> district.This area is a true gatewayto southern <strong>Lyon</strong>, and45% of the 350,000 sq.m. of surface area will bededicated to the servicessector.<strong>≥</strong> Major <strong>project</strong>s on the move!Part-Dieu:Oxygène Tower wins a prizeThe Oxygène Tower, set to beinaugurated in 2010, has wonat the beginning of Februarythe prize for “most beautifulbuilding” in the Pierres d’OrCompetition, sponsored byproperty professionals. The<strong>Lyon</strong>-based architects Arteet Charpentier designed this115-meter-high skyscraper with28 floors. Launched in January2007, over time the program has builtup a strategy based on complementaryinitiatives: conducting press relations,using on and off-line communication,leading a network of Ambassadors andholding prestigious events. ONLYLYONis a brand recognized for its governance(it comprises the <strong>major</strong> economicstakeholders in the <strong>Lyon</strong> area), as wellas for its concept, serving as an examplefor many cities in France. Sometimes,it is even compared to brands such asI amsterdam or Think London.2009 was a productive year for ONLYLYON:the brand was featured in large displaysin European airports, train stations and inflightmagazines; it developed its onlinepresence by investing in particular insocial networks; it increased its visibilityin national and international media andattracted over 3,700 Ambassadors. Atpresent, the brand is starting out 2010in the spirit of continuity. Like every year, the festival willshowcase the many facets of <strong>Lyon</strong> through events in some 40different locations: concert halls, abandoned industrial zones,museums, galleries, movie theaters, squares and streets, barsand clubs, and more.Ben RetrospectiveAfter Andy Warhol in 2005 andKeith Haring in 2008, in 2010the Museum of ContemporaryArt (MAC) of <strong>Lyon</strong> is payinghomage in 2010 to the work ofBen Vautier, a <strong>major</strong> artist ofthe 20th century known for hisperformances, installations andpaintings. It will be the largestretrospective ever dedicated tothe artist. The exhibition willtake place from March 3 throughJuly 11, 2010. In a surface area of3,000 sq. meters, i.e. the entirespace of the MAC of <strong>Lyon</strong>, over 1,000 works will retrace 50 yearsof creation, from the very first productions in Nice to the mostrecent, including appropriations, performances, paintings andinstallations. All the themes that Ben explored in the seriesthat brought him fame are brought together for the very firsttime: Bananas, Ego, Gestures, Ethnicity, Sex, Truth, etc. Thisunprecedented show also presents new videos and workscreated especially for the occasion.
