SS-AGR-104Trade Names of Herbicides Containing a Given ActiveIngredient 1J. A. Tredaway 2Three types of names are listed on herbicidelabels. The chemical name is the precise chemicalidentification of the active ingredient in the product.Chemical names are useful to chemists and others thatneed to identify and communicate the exact name ofthe active ingredient. It is a legal requirement that thechemical name be on the herbicide label. The commonor active ingredient name is selected to simplify thechemical name and make communication easier andless technical. Most herbicide recommendationsinclude the common or active ingredient namebecause more than one commercial product maycontain the same active ingredient. The trade name, used for marketing purposes, is the specificcommercial product. Most farmers, homeowners, andothers use the trade name when referring to aherbicide. The trade name may also include various numbersor letters to further identify the product. For example, the number immediately after the trade name refers toconcentration of active ingredient in the product. Ifthe product is a liquid formulation, the numberindicates the pounds of active ingredient per gallon, but if the formulation is dry, the number refers to thepercent of active ingredient in the product. The lettersafter this number indicate the formulation of theproduct. For example, EC means an emulsifiableconcentrate, WP means wettable powder, and G meansgranular. There are several other designations for thevarious formulations. In the following list, the common or trade nameis followed by the known trade names.Acifluorfen: Blazer 2LAmetryn: Evik DFAsulam: AsuloxAtrazine: AAtrex Nine O, AAtrex 4L, Atrazine90 DF,Atrazine 90 WDG, Atrazine 4LBenefin: Balan DF, Balan 2.5 G, Clean CropBensulide: Prefar 4EBentazon: BasagranBromacil: Hyvar X, Hyvar X-L1.
