The entity of this valley is best appreciated from thevalley bottom, viewing the area ‘longitudinally’ both up-stream and downstream.The northern end of the valley flattening out into the chalk downlandDescriptionThe valley landscape extending from Wimborne St. Giles northwestwardsto Monkton Up Wimborne is of contrasting character from thesurrounding chalk downland. Nevertheless, the total landscape ‘reads’as one and there are no clear cut-off points between the respectiveThe Allen as it runs towards Wimborne St GilesThe profile of the valley is very shallow, quite different in character fromother settlements near the head of the chalk valley river system.
