The designof new fonts is unusual, so thelaunch of Suez on the stamps initself is an important typographicevent.Nils Jarlsbo’s interest in typographyand the old maritimestencil texts began when hedis covered Gösta Werner andhis powerful paintings of boatsand oceans. In Jarlsbo’s hometown of Simrishamn in the farsouth of Sweden there is anentire museum devoted to GöstaWerner, and the young Nils wasa frequent visitor. “The shapes ofthe Suez characters are a boy’sromantic tribute to the sailor whotold the old sea stories betterthan anyone else: Gösta Werner,”Jarlsbo explains.One of Gösta Werner’s maritimepaintings was the original fora 1989 issue commemoratingauthor Evert Taube and others.

The Swedish summer is framed by two setsummer tables: the Midsummer Party in June andthe Crawfish Party in August.Dinner is served, bon appétit!The official start of the Swedish summer isMidsummer at the end of June, when the daysare at their longest. This is also when manypeople begin their summer vacation.The food on the Midsummer table, or picnicblanket if the weather’s good, is also anexpression of the light, fresh atmosphere ofsummer. Few things are so strongly associatedwith Swedish Midsummer celebrations thanpickled herring with newly cut chives, souredcream and freshly boiled new potatoes.Nowadays the barbecue is never far fromthe table, and a tasty piece of grilled meat isalso a common sight at this season. Chipolatasausages, meatballs and salad round offthe main course. Dessert usually involvesstrawberries in one form or another, such asstrawberry gateau.If Midsummer is the prelude to summer, thecrawfish party is its conclusion. Darkness mayfall a little earlier in August, but the lingeringevening heat makes up for it. Cheery crawfishlanterns light up the table.Eating crawfish with accompaniments suchas spiced cheese and crisp bread is just astasty and popular year after year. The ritualis to slurp and eat with one’s hands, whilesinging traditional songs wearing a silly hat.These days crawfish can be sold all year round,although most people still think of the classicmonth of August as the right time for thecrawfish party.

Thestamps have beendeveloped in consultationwith SwedenPost customersand agents, withexciting design byLars Sjööblom.“With the Winged Butterfly series we’ve taken a new design approachfeaturing close-ups of the wings,” says stamp designer and engraverLars Sjööblom.Two new stampsin the innovative butterfly seriesthorsten sandbergWhen designer and engraver Lars Sjööblomwas asked to create the new Winged Butterflystamp series, he took an exhaustive inventoryof butterfly stamps from around the world.He studied stamp catalogues, the Internet,and of course many original stamps. Butterfliesare one of the most popular motifs on stamps.“Almost all the butterflies are portrayedin a traditional way. This time we wantedsomething new, so we consulted our artisticadvisors and developed the different kindof design which was then set for the entireWinged Butterfly series.”Lars Sjööblom sketched various options,from slightly trimming the wings to extremeclose-ups. He finally settled on an elegantcompromise in which close-ups are combinedwith a small silhouette of the entire butterfly.“With this pictorial approach we advanceour position in stamp design, while alsopleasing those wishing to see butterfliesdepicted in a more concrete way,” he says.But the Winged Butterfly series is not onlyinnovative in terms of design. Security hasbeen another key aim. The wingspanis 45–58 millimeters.The Apollo (Parnassius apollo)was also named by Linnaeus in1758. The Apollo has dwindledin numbers and can nowmainly be found on Gotland, inStockholm’s southern archipelago,and in the archipelagoon the border of Småland andÖstergötland provinces.The wingspan is 62–87 millimeterstip to tip. The hindwingsfeature two large round red spotswith black rings around them,with or without a white center.It is this part of the wing that isdepicted on the stamp proof.
