Alexander M. PetersenCell: +39 340-146-1379 / Office: +39 0583 432-6547 email: petersen.xander@gmail.comwebsite: http://physics.bu.edu/~amp17/I am an assistant professor at the IMT Institute for Advanced Studies Lucca, a member of the faculty ofEconomics and Institutional change, in particular, a member of the Laboratory for the analysis of complexeconomic systems (AxES). I obtained a Ph. D. in Physics from Boston University as a member of H. E.Stanley’s Econophysics group. My dissertation research focuses on three subtopics: (i) dynamics in thestock market, (ii) quantifying longevity and success in competitive professions using methods from statisticalphysics in the field of quantitative sociology, and (iii) analyzing common scaling behavior in financeand macroeconomics. My curricula and research have focused on the field of stochastic phenomena withemphasis on high-frequency analysis of Trades and Quotes (TAQ) financial data, random walks, diffusion, network theory, sports statistics, and empirical analysis of macroeconomic variables. In addition to foundationsin Physics, I have become proficient in numerical analysis, Monte-Carlo simulation of agent models, statistics and probability theory, and simplistic reasoning.EDUCATION• Ph.D. Physics (Boston University, March 2011). Teaching: Spring 2012, “Mathematics precourse,” an introduction advanced mathematicaltools including theory of complex variables, Fourier transform, Legendre transform, differential equations, partial differential equations.Research Assistant, Boston University, Boston , MA 2006-2011• Analyzed dissipation of information in U.S. markets using extremely large data sets of TAQ data(intra-day Trades and Quotes) which I refined for 1-minute resolution time series analysis.• Developed exactly solvable mathematical model of career longevity in competitive professions.• Studied the Voter Model, a stochastic contact process describing two-state voters (eg. Dem., Rep.) Incharge of analytic calculations and programming large-scale Monte-Carlo simulations in C++.Teaching Assistant, Boston University, Boston , MA 2004-2006• Led discussion sections and labs in conjunction with undergraduate courses.• Developed blackboard and presentation skills.• Explained difficult concepts and prepared engaging and relevant presentations.Research Assistant, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT 2002-2003• Worked on (electron) spin transport in thin magnetic nanostructures (with Prof. Jing Shi).• In charge of photolithography and thin-layer deposition using clean-room and E-beam sputterer.
