tents. We were not long arrived before thechiefs of this second camp paid a visit to theGreat Road, who informed them of his intentionto visit the fort and recommended tothem to join his march. They consented,and orders were given as usual by a publicofficer.The night afforded me but little sleep, sogreat was the disturbance from noises of allkinds; feasting and dancing; the women chastisingthe dogs; the dogs of the two campsmeeting and maintaining against each otherthe whole night long a universal war.In the morning the two camps united in oneline of march, which was now so far extendedthat those in the rear could not descry thefront. At noon we passed a small wood, wherewe saw horses feeding. The Indians informedme that they belonged to one of their camps,or villages; and that it was their uniform customto leave their horses in the beginning ofthe winter at the first wood where they werewhen the snow fell, at which the horses alwaysremain through the season, and where theirmasters are sure to find them in the spring.The horses never go out of of the islandsightassigned them, winter or summer, for fear ofwanting its shelter in a storm.We encamped this evening among somesmall brushwood. Our fire went out accidentallyin the night, and I was kept awake by thecold and by the noise of the dogs.300
