During the war, when labor wasscarce, the employees did not leave for otherjobs; of the 205 men and boys who went towar, four were killed and 196 came back tothe plant as "home," and during the manystrikes that have disturbed the printing industryin Chicago during the last sixteen years,not one man has gone out on strike. Thesefacts seem satisfactory evidence that TheLakeside Press is "a good place to work."The Apprenticeship School, the Taylorsystem of scientific management and weeklybonuses for increased efficiency, and the quicksettlement of all differences and grievancesby frank discussion between the officers andthe employees are all contrary to union rules,but are the very foundations upon which theorganization has been built up.Should the national unions in the printingindustry accept the principle of the open shopand recognize the right of every man to workregardless of his union affiliations, comfortablyand without molestation, an open shopwould be practical and the only one thatwould be fair. But the national unions do notrecognize the open shop except under compulsionand accept it only as a temporaryvii
