As you think about summer and wonder how you will keep your child engaged, lookno farther than <strong>Reston</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>Center</strong>. <strong>Summer</strong> is one of the most exciting seasonsat RCC! Both the Hunters Woods and Lake Anne facilities are filled with smiling, happycampers and staffers.This summer, we are thrilled to offer 110 sessions of camp programs designed to appealto varying and unique interests. We made sure to add in more sessions of the camps thatrocketed in popularity last year – LEGO Engineering, Robotics, and Cooking – and weexpanded Paintball and Rock Climbing to full-week camps.While we have increased several popular specialty camp offerings, we are also very pleasedto feature a few new themes. From Textile Art to Minecraft, Sewing Sampler to SoccerBugs, and Trendy Jewelry to Multi-Sport, there is sure to be a camp that your child willlove. As always, our annual summertime favorites such as Young Actors Theatre (YAT),Lake Anne Art Rave for Kids (LARK), Road Rulz and <strong>Camp</strong> Goodtimes are returning foranother fun-filled season.We hope you enjoy the newly designed chart of camp programs featured in the first pagesof the guide. It was created to allow you to easily review and select camp programs thatbest fit your scheduling needs and your child’s interests.Finally, do not miss the <strong>Reston</strong> <strong>Camp</strong> Expo on Saturday, January 25. The event is FREE andwill be held from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at RCC Hunters Woods. Parents and childrencan visit with more than a dozen local, non-profit providers of summer activities andlearn about the thousands of summer programs available throughout the greater <strong>Reston</strong>area. Exhibitors will be on hand to answer questions and provide information about campofferings, scholarship and financial resources, and employment and volunteer opportunitiesavailable for teens and adults. Road Rulz(12-16 years old)Get ready for a fantastic summer of Road Rulz adventure camp.Participants will travel and engage in new and exciting activities eachday. Imaginations will soar, new skills will be learned, and tons of funmemories will be created. Young Actors Theatre(7 – 17 years old)The Young Actors Theatre <strong>Summer</strong> Program is a five weekcumulative program that trains young actors in the disciplinesof voice, dance, and acting. The 7-11 age group is limited to 50participants who will be split into two groups. The 12-17 agegroup is limited to 25 participants, who must be 12 years ofage on or before July 1, 2014. Cake Decorating Techniques(7 – 9 years old)<strong>Camp</strong>ers will learn to frost a basic, one-layer round cake, usefondant icing, and decorate using basic fondant icing techniques.They will use a variety of tips that will amaze family and friends.These activities are designed for independent student involvementand learning. They will prepare yeast bread, sweetbreads, muffins, cakes, pies, cookies, and even homemade jam. Thecurriculum includes the science behind cooking as well as recipes, tips,and ideas for making more baked goods at home. Participants will have the opportunity to cut their own glass with theapproval of the instructor, or they may choose to use pre-cut pieces. Theywill glue and grout their masterpieces which can then be displayed at homeor given as a gift. <strong>Camp</strong>ers must be able to focus and work independentlywith general supervision. <strong>Camp</strong>ers must wear closed-toe shoes, keep longhair tied back, and bring a bagged snack. Learn how to use jewelers’ tools and how to connect all theparts to make one-of-a-kind, cool jewelry pieces. Some skills that willbe taught: how to correctly and safely use tools; how to make jumprings to connect the main components of the piece; how to make aclasp to hold a bracelet or necklace together; and how to make earwires for earrings. Crime Scene Investigators(10 – 12 years old)Step into the shoes of a crime scene investigator. <strong>Camp</strong>ers will learnto process a crime scene by working hands-on to gather evidence.Working together as a Crime Scene Unit, they will take crime scenephotographs and search for clues. <strong>Camp</strong>ers will also start a casefile to keep track of the evidence throughout the week and spendtwo days learning real procedures for collecting fingerprints andother evidence from a forensic expert. Historical Swordsmanship(9 – 13 years old)Based on Renaissance and Medieval techniques, the sword-fightingdisciplines explored are the rapier (the traditional sword) and the twohandedsword (knightly Medieval European sword).
