There weretwo arrangements that year, one in Osloand the other in 'Kardemomme By' in theAnimal Park in Kristiansand. Childrenparaded with fire torches in both placesas a symbol of World Peace. When thetorches eventually went out the idea of acontinuously burning flame was born.A large boulder with a natural hollow init was placed in Kardemomme By. Thisis known as the Children's PeaceMonument. The flame was lit on the1st of September 1996 and will burnuntil no child is suffering the terrors ofwar. Around the flame are placed smallerstones with the names of countrieswhere war is still rife. When war is overin a particular country the stone isremoved. When there are no morestones the flame can be extinguished.'REDD BARNA's FREDSLYSbegins every year on the 1st ofDecember at the Children's PeaceMonument in the Animal Park inKristiansand. It ends in Oslo on the10th of December, the day the NobelPeace Prize is awarded. The'Fredsfakkeltog' (torchlight processionfor peace) congregates outside theRådhus (town hall) in Oslo and thewinner of the Nobel Peace Prize is presentedwith the last of a succession oftorches which have carried the PeaceFlame from Kristiansand. The idea behind REDD BARNA'sFredslys is to allow children toexpress their desire for World Peace in aquiet and very moving ceremony.Every year over 150,000 school childrenin Norway unite to show the worldthat this is what they want. They wanteveryone to think of the millions of childrenwho are suffering unbelievablehardships and having their families brokenup and the world as they know it inruins.Torchlight processions are held bychildren all over Norway between the1st and 10th of December. This yearthe candlelit Parade for Peace by IFG,YEPA, SWEC and the children in preschoolwill begin at 09:00 on Friday2nd December. Families and friendsmay congregate in the school lobbyarea.
