The InformerPublished by ISS as a Community Newsletter11 November, 2005 Tel.: 51 55 43 22 Volume XXVIII, No. 5From the Director:It is in this issue of the Informer, we arevery pleased to send along our newlyapproved school calendar for the 2006-2007 school year. It is the Board ofTrustees who, by policy, approve theschool calendar that I send them everyyear as a recommendation. The 2006-2007 approved school calendaris very similar to our current year’scalendar. As previously, our fall andwinter breaks are the same weeks thatStavanger Kommune will follow. Wehave followed this procedure for manyyears now, realizing that many ISS familiesalso have children attending localschools. Additionally, many of ouremployees’ children are in Stavangerschools and the opportunity to enjoy thefall and winter breaks together is a cherishedtradition for them as well.We have added one employee in-serviceday, giving us a total of three for theyear. One of those days appears inSeptember and the other two are adjacentto the fall break. We believe thatparents will agree that this is a goodposition for those days. For those familiestraveling then, they will not be incompetition for precious (and moreexpensive) airline seats once the fallbreak begins for the other local schoolsas well. We have learned that the fallbreak is a very valuable time for manyof our high school students as well. It isa logical time for some to visit universitycampuses to see them in action withstudents filling classrooms. Manyseniors have also used the time to finishoff their university applications or to putthe finishing touches on their IBExtended Essays. And no, we have not forgotten to add theAscension Day holiday to the calendar. In 2007, it falls on May 17th, Norway’sConstitution Day. May 17th is always ahalf school day for us as the entireschool marches in the local parade. Tonewcomers in our school community, Iwould add that it is always celebrated on“the day” whether that day is a weekdayor a Saturday or Sunday. We are well aware that, while our calendarhas some aspects of a variety of differentnations, it is not a mirror image ofany other particular national schedule. As well, in the international school circuitone can find a wide variance of holidayschedules. What we have tried todo over the years is come up with aschedule that is a relatively good fit forISS and its divergent community. Whenwe make changes, it has a logical baseof reason behind it, acknowledging thatthe perspective of each family in theschool will be different. As always, I am delighted to receivesuggestions from anyone in our schoolcommunity. The next time the calendarwill be adjusted will be in November,1

The Informer 11 November, 2005From the Director.......2006 when the Board is asked toapprove the recommendation I submitfor the 2007-2008 school year. Soplease feel free to send in any suggestionsyou might have. Many of thechanges that have been made in the pastcan be directly linked to suggestionsfrom parents and staff members. Also at their November meeting, Mr.Jim Hatton, was elected to join theBoard of Trustees representing NATO.A Canadian citizen, Mr. Hatton has ason in the primary school. Welcome!place on the weekend of November 19-20. Good luck Regina! All the best, and start planning for thosefuture holidays!Regards,Dr. Linda M. DuevelDirectorLDuevel@isstavanger.noAnother of our ISS students making aname for herself on the television screenthese days is 10th grade student, ReginaZheng. Regina has made her mark onthe TV2 academic quiz bowl show,“Klisterhjerne.” While as a student atTastarustå Ungdom Skole last year,Regina and another student were selectedto become contestants on the show. The show, (which can be viewed onSaturday and Sunday on TV2), is filmedin Oslo and Regina tells me that it was afascinating experience to be able to seefirst-hand how shows are produced.Three teenaged contestants competeagainst each other and a celebrity guestis also introduced. On her first show, the celebrity guest was former cabinetminister, Hilde Frafjord Johnson, whocoincidentally was also our graduationspeaker two years ago.Regina won her first round, severalweeks ago, and now is slated for thesemi-finalist round, which will take2

11 November, 2005 The InformerFrom the Director.......Attenti on US Citizens:If you have a child whose passport is expiring in the next year, please read on.New US passport requirements state that children have to appear in person along with a parentbefore a US Embassy officer to renew their passports. Typically, this means a trip to the USEmbassy in Oslo.On November 15, however, US Embassy Officer Maria Silver, will be at ISS, and can meet withfamilies from 09:30 until 11:00 to verify the paperwork and avoid the need of an additional tripto the Embassy in Oslo. Those families interested in meeting with Ms. Silver must do the following: Call Anne Brit Fox at 51 554300 to book a time. At least one parent must accompany the child (or children). The parent who comes alongmust bring their US passport. If the second parent cannot attend, they must send along anotarized statement of consent form to the Embassy along with all the other completedpaperwork. If a parent has sole custody of the child, they must bring a valid custody decree. Ms. Silver’s task will be to verify the paperwork and sign the application. It is theresponsibility of the family to send all the paperwork, the expiring passport and theapplication fee to the Embassy in Oslo afterwards. Parents should review very carefully all the instructions on the Embassy website,(www.usa.no) about children’s passports. You can download the application forms at theembassy website that you will need to bring to school on November 15. Documents required, (see website for details) must be brought along, including the child’sold passport, original birth certificate, two identical proper photos, etc. The application should already be filled out before the family meets Ms. Silver. (Do notuse the Norwegian letters Æ, Å or Ø.) Ms. Silver will not accept the fee for renewing the passports—the payment is to be mailed tothe Embassy afterwards along with the application. The applications won’t be processeduntil the Embassy has received the payment for a child’s passport and application. In most cases, it is only children who must appear in person. Adult US citizens simply needingto renew their passports can do it all via mail with the Embassy. As mentioned above, should you wish to meet with Ms. Silver, please call Anne Brit Fox to booka time.Thank you.3

11 November, 2005 The InformerIT’S FLU SEASONNovember is officially the start of the”flu ” season. The symptoms of the fluare more severe than the common cold, often resulting in a person needing totake to bed for 4-5 days. The fever associatedwith the flu can be quite high andthe headache, muscle aches and lowerback pain are equally troubling.Seasonal FluIs a human disease which can be preventedby a vaccine. Everyone knowsthis disease and a part of the populationsuffers from it during winter. As thiskind of flu can be fatal, for the physicallyweak amongst us, the elderly, andpeople who have been rendered weakdue to a chronic illness, it is urged thatthese people be vaccinated first.Avian FluOr” bird flu” is just that- an influenzavirus that usually infects wild or domesticatedbirds (particularly poultry). There have been a number of cases (112globally) of the virus infecting humanswho have had very close contact withpoultry in the Asian Pacific Region. Thedeath rate from these infections has beenhigh at >50%Pandemic FluIs flu that spreads rapidly around theworld. A flu pandemic occurs when anew strain of virus appears to whichmost people have no immunity to.The reason that there is so much concernNews from the Nurseabout the Avian Flu is that this could bethe cause of the next Pandemic Flu.AT THIS TIME THERE IS NO EVI-DENCE TO SUGGEST THAT THEAVIAN FLU VIRUS CAN SPREADFROM HUMAN TO HUMAN.There is concern however that it couldchange to become a highly infectiousvirus to humans.FACTSWe DON’T know when the nextPandemic Flu will hit us.There will be a vaccine for a FluPandemic.IT will take a number of months for avaccine to be developed.Norway as well as many other countriesare stockpiling the anti-viral drugTamiflu. This will become availableimmediately to all if a Pandemic Flushould start.Remember that if you do get the flu thisyear, follow the common sense remediesof plenty of rest, lots of fluids, and overthe counter, non-aspirin pain relieverswill minimize your symptoms and helpthe body to recover. One last word of caution: Since theseinfections are passed from one person toanother through the droplets of breathing, sneezes and coughs, if a somewhatill child comes to school they are sure topass the infection on to other children. Therefore, it is wise to keep sick childrenat home until they have recovered.5

If you haven’tsent your child with a hood or hat oncold or rainy days, they will notice itwhen they get outside. Teachers onrecess duty want to keep your childrensafe and healthy. When it is rainy orcold, we have a rule—nothing on thehead, stay under the shed. It is almostalways fun to be outside when there istime and space for play, no matter theweather. It isn’t the weather outside thatcauses us to catch a cold, most likely theopposite. When thetorches eventually went out the idea of acontinuously burning flame was born.A large boulder with a natural hollow init was placed in Kardemomme By. Thisis known as the Children's PeaceMonument. The flame was lit on the1st of September 1996 and will burnuntil no child is suffering the terrors ofwar. When war is overin a particular country the stone isremoved. When there are no morestones the flame can be extinguished.'REDD BARNA's FREDSLYSbegins every year on the 1st ofDecember at the Children's PeaceMonument in the Animal Park inKristiansand. It ends in Oslo on the10th of December, the day the NobelPeace Prize is awarded. The'Fredsfakkeltog' (torchlight processionfor peace) congregates outside theRådhus (town hall) in Oslo and thewinner of the Nobel Peace Prize is presentedwith the last of a succession oftorches which have carried the PeaceFlame from Kristiansand. The idea behind REDD BARNA'sFredslys is to allow children toexpress their desire for World Peace in aquiet and very moving ceremony.Every year over 150,000 school childrenin Norway unite to show the worldthat this is what they want. They wanteveryone to think of the millions of childrenwho are suffering unbelievablehardships and having their families brokenup and the world as they know it inruins.Torchlight processions are held bychildren all over Norway between the1st and 10th of December. This yearthe candlelit Parade for Peace by IFG,YEPA, SWEC and the children in preschoolwill begin at 09:00 on Friday2nd December. Families and friendsmay congregate in the school lobbyarea. May we remind you that this is asilent parade.
