The long silk tasselsof the doctoral and master’s degree capscustomarily are worn on the left; however,bachelor degree candidates enter theceremony hall with tassels on the rightand, upon receiving their diplomas inhand, switch the tassels in unison tothe left, thereby taking their placeamong all the men and women whohave sought learning throughthe centuries.1O
