Provisional Technical Process BulletinGranocoat® 2840Aqueous Primer-pre-treatmentfor galvanised steel coilFeatures andrange of application:Granocoat® 2840 is a liquid, chromium-free product for the coating ofgalvanised, particularly hot-dip galvanised steel and „Galfan“ coil.Granocoat® 2840 forms, upon drying with warm air, a well-adhering, opaquecoating, that is suitable as primer for organic topcoats in the coil coatingprocess.Granocoat® 2840 is a single-package formulation based on aqueous resindispersion. The product does not contain co-solvents, so that there are noVOCs liberated during the drying / curing.Granocoat® 2840 is applied by means of a roll-coater onto the clean metalstrip. The process does neither involve separate pre-treatment norsubsequent rinsing.Recommended coating weight: approx. 10 – 13 g/m² (dry film)Components: Granocoat® 2840Make-up:Granocoat® 2840 is delivered ready-to-use. Or can be diluted with DI waterto reduce the viscosity.Application parameters:Process sequence:Granocoat® 2840 generates a uniform film when applied onto clean, greasefreemetal surfaces. The application temperature should be 20 – 25°C.Temperatures > 35°, as well as direct contact of the coater with warm airmust be avoided in order to prevent premature drying and scaling on therollers. The liquid film is dried in a convection oven at air temperatures of 60– 80°C.The entire process sequence consists of the following steps:1. Degreasing2. Rinsing3. Rinsing with DI water4. Drying (oil-free pressurised air or hover-dryer)5. Roll-coater application of Granocoat® 28406. Drying at 60 – 80°C in a convection oven

The strip must be free from scale and corrosion products. Cleaning isperformed with one of our Ridoline® cleaners. After cleaning, the strip must be thoroughly rinsed with water and fine-rinsedwith DI water. Finally, the strip surface is dried, e.g. with (oil-free) pressurisedair. A dry surface is mandatory to achieve a flawless, uniform coating withGranocoat® 2840.To obtain a dry coating of 5 µm, a wet film of 10.9 ml/m² (13.1 g/m²) must beapplied.Density (dry matter) 1.44 g/cm³Density (liquid product) 1.20 g/cm³Solids content 55 % +/- 2 %Process options:General remarks:Attention:Granocoat® 2840 might be diluted with DI water for application. It is notrecommended to store diluted product due to risk of sedimentation.Tanks, pumps and piping must be constructed from acid and fluoride-proofmaterials. The rubber coating of the coater rollers can be made from solventresistantmaterials that are common for paint application (e.g. Hypalon,EPDM etc.). The pick-up roll can have a micro-structured surface. It isrecommended to use a three-roller coater. After use all equipment surfaces that have been in contact with Granocoat®2840 must be cleaned with water and a suitable solvent, e.g. methyl ethylketone or preferentially acetone. The storing temperature of Granocoat® 2840 shall not exceed 40°C.Granocoat® 2840 contains acrylic polymers in aqueous dispersion, complexfluorides and organic and mineral acids. The expiry date of the product is given on the packaging labels. This information is based on our current level of knowledge.
