Over his 10seasons and 11 years asthe Predators’ benchboss, Trotz’s mission hasevolved from fieldinga <strong>com</strong>petitive andhardworking expansionclub to directing a fast,skilled and hungry groupcounted among the <strong>NHL</strong>’stop contenders. His careerpoints percentage as an<strong>NHL</strong> head coach passedthe .500 mark in 2006-07,and based on the successof the club, Trotz earned fourth place in balloting (by the<strong>NHL</strong> Broadcasters’ Association) for the 2007 Jack AdamsAward, given each season to “the <strong>NHL</strong> coach adjudged tohave contributed the most to his team’s success.” He alsoserved as an assistant coach for the Western ConferenceAll-Stars at the 2007 <strong>NHL</strong> All-Star Game, and was namedthe <strong>NHL</strong>’s coach of the year by The Sporting News, an honordetermined through a vote of his peers.Trotz enters <strong>2008</strong>-<strong>09</strong> with the second-longest tenure amongthe <strong>NHL</strong> coaching fraternity, behind only Buffalo’s Lindy Ruff.He also ranks 10th in <strong>NHL</strong> history among games coached withthe same team and 13th among wins with the same club.By reaching the <strong>2008</strong> Stanley Cup Playoffs, the NashvillePredators became one of just seven franchises (along withCalgary, Dallas, Detroit, New Jersey, Ottawa and San Jose) toreach the postseason in each of the past four seasons. Nashvillehas recorded 398 points over the last four campaigns (91 in2003-04, 106 in 2005-06, 110 in 2006-07 and 91 in 2007-08)for an average of 99.5 points per season.The Predators have also been one of the top teams in the<strong>NHL</strong> since the start of the 2005-06 season. Their 141 winsranks sixth best in the league, while 83 home victories sincethe start of 2005-06 puts them second behind only Detroitin that category. The club soared to its highest level yet in2006-07, finishing the season with the second-most pointsin the Western Conference and tied for the third-mostpoints in the entire National Hockey League. The Predatorsestablished franchise records in points (110), wins (51), roadwins (23) and goals (272) and have now won 100 gamestotal in their last two seasons.The 46-year-old Winnipeg native reached his goal ofbe<strong>com</strong>ing an <strong>NHL</strong> head coach when he was named to hiscurrent position on Aug. 6, 1997. After a year aggressivelyscouting talent in North America and Europe, Trotz and hisstaff made the most of their opportunity by leading theinaugural edition (1998-99) of the Predators to a 28-47-7record. Starting with a 3-2 victory over the CarolinaHurricanes on Oct. 13, 1998, the Predators’ 28 wins werethe third-most in expansion history.On March 1, 2003, Trotz coached his 392nd game with theNashville Predators, establishing a league record for mostgames coached by a team’s original coach since the <strong>NHL</strong>’sfirst expansion in 1967. He surpassed current Nashvillebroadcast analyst Terry Crisp’s mark of 391 games coachedas the Tampa Bay Lightning’s first coach from 1992-1997.Prior to joining the Predators, Trotz spent five seasons(1992-97) as the head coach of the Washington Capitals’primary developmental affiliate in the American HockeyLeague. He was named head coach of the BaltimoreSkipjacks in 1992 after one season as an assistant coach.Following the franchise’s relocation to Portland, Maine in1993, he led the Portland Pirates to two Calder Cup Finalsappearances over the next four seasons. In 1994-95, Trotzcoached Portland to a Calder Cup Championship and aleague-best 43-27-10 record and captured AHL Coach ofthe Year honors. In 2006, he was honored with election tothe Pirates’ Hall of Fame.Trotz began his coaching career in 1984 as an assistant withthe University of Manitoba. He then served two seasons(1985-87) as the head coach and general manager of theDauphin Kings junior hockey club before returning to theUniversity of Manitoba as the head coach in 1987. In Jan.2001, Trotz was inducted into the University’s Hall of Fame.During the 1987 campaign, Trotz also served as a scout for theSpokane Chiefs (WHL) and a part-time scout for the Capitals. In1988, he joined Washington as a full-time western scout, andthe next season he became the Caps’ chief western scout.Before coaching, Trotz played junior hockey for Regina(WHL) from 1979-83, capturing a WHL championship in1979-80. The defenseman registered 102 points (19g-83a)and 490 penalty minutes in 204 games.In addition to his <strong>NHL</strong> duties, Trotz has answered the callfor Canada’s national team. This<strong>com</strong>mitment was recognized when Trotz washonored with the Community Spirit Award (inrecognition for <strong>com</strong>munity service) at the 2005O’Charley’s Dinner of Champions, presented bythe Nashville Sports Council. For the past severalseasons, the Trotz’s have donated $500 to MyFriend’s House (a United Way agency) for eachNashville victory.
