1 <strong>MAT</strong>-<strong>File</strong> <strong>Format</strong>Level 5 <strong>MAT</strong>LAB Array Data Element <strong>Format</strong>sThe <strong>MAT</strong>-file data type mi<strong>MAT</strong>RIX (14) is used to represent all types of <strong>MAT</strong>LABarrays, including:• Numeric arrays• Character arrays• Sparse arrays• Cell arrays• Structures• ObjectsThe mi<strong>MAT</strong>RIX data type is a compound data type. <strong>MAT</strong>-file data elements ofthis type are composed of multiple subelements. The subelements can be of anyother <strong>MAT</strong>-file data type, including other mi<strong>MAT</strong>RIX data types.Figure 1-5 shows a mi<strong>MAT</strong>RIX data element composed of three subelements.Note how each subelement is a data element with its own tag.
