Level 5 MAT-File FormatEach variable in a MAT-file has a 56-byte header. Even if the data is stored inthe header itself, as can be the case for variables containing 1 to 4 bytes of data,no variable in a MAT-file can be less than 56 bytes. Thus, regardless of howrandom the data in a variable may be, it is unlikely (but not impossible) that acompressed variable will take more space than its uncompressed counterpart.This is because the 56-byte header always compresses to a smaller size. Notethat compression works best on nonrandom data. The more random the data,the less it will compress.1-13
