4.2.20·,..Perceptions of accidentsThe table below shows that 62 percent ofthe respondents indicated that they fearedroad accidents. Only 43 percent feared wild animals and 46 percent fear otherforms of accidents like drowning (Table 2.5). Umlazi township residents are notexposed to dangers like drowning in a swimming pool or the sea, falling from amountain and others. This was shown by44.5 percent ofthe respondents. This could be attributed to the spread ofdiseaseslike AIDS in KwaZulu-Natal. With lack of education people end up beingsuspicious of anything that might expose them to diseases. More than 50 percentofthe respondents indicated that they do not fear bad weather conditions, hostilityand language barriers (Table 2.6).59
