Information on State Development Report - of Planning Commission

<strong>Information</strong> on State Development ReportThe Planning Commission has initiated, in coordination with the States concerned, thepreparation of State Development Reports (SDR) for a number of States. Each Report isbeing prepared under the supervision of a Core Committee, headed by a Member of thePlanning Commission, and including a senior representative of the State Government. Thereports are in various stages of progress. SDR`s for Assam ,Punjab and Orissa have beenreleased . Most of these reports will be finalised within the first two years of the TenthPlan.The objective in bringing out these reports is to provide a quality reference documenton the development profile and set out strategies for accelerating the growth rate of majorStates. They are aimed to be credible independent documents prepared with the assistanceof reputed expert national-level agencies. They are, however, not intended to be meredocuments. Behind the preparation of these reports is the recognition of the reality that,over many decades of developmental planning, wide differences in the growthperformance across States have emerged. Continuation of low growth rates into the futurefor a group of States representing almost a third of the total population, while the rest ofthe country enjoys robust growth, means that inter-state inequality would continue toincrease and poverty would become even more regionally concentrated than it is today.These reports thus respond to the concern of regional disparities. The SDRs are expectedto set out the medium-term strategies that need to be adopted to bring about theaccelerated levels of growth needed to lessen disparities and reduce poverty.The reports are expected to provide a useful reference. A typical SDR would set out theprofile of the State, make an assessment of the resources and provide growth perspectivesfor major sectors over the next Plan period and thereafter. It would bring out the regionaldimensions of growth in the State, which would seek to impart value for developmentpractitioners interested in the State. Ultimately, these reports would highlight the criticalresource gaps in the realisation of sectoral perspectives and articulate the desired policydirections, which in turn would set out a road map for accelerated growth and intensifiedpoverty reduction for the State in the future.State wise details on composition of the Core Committee, Partner Agency and ContactPersons for SDR`s are given below .1
