total 507 and will have provided clean drinkingwater for almost 200,000 children. During thispast <strong>Rotary</strong> year we have installed or haveunderway 63 systems. Funding has come fromour own fund-raising events, from sponsors andfrom <strong>Rotary</strong> International matching grants.Each project includes a shed to house the system(paid for by the local community), the machineitself (each suitable for up to 400 children) anda maintenance fund handed to the local <strong>Rotary</strong> sustainability <strong>of</strong> the projects is vital and has beenan ongoing concern <strong>of</strong> those involved. In 2010-11a survey <strong>of</strong> participating clubs revealed that 90%<strong>of</strong> the systems are still producing clean, drinkablewater. Our supplier has also done a survey <strong>of</strong>schools in the north in the past 12 months withsatisfactory results.Embassy did another three this past year under itsDirect Aid Programme, and now has 19 under itsbelt. Rtn Prasert Mangkornkarn very generously Foundation from the Netherlands, in conjunctionwith Dutch <strong>Rotary</strong> clubs, did six. Dennis Kramerdid another two. New sponsors this year includedthe International Women’s <strong>Club</strong>, Cadeaux Jewelryand the Chaîne de Rôtisseurs. Those are just afew. It is not possible to name everyone here, butwe mention and thank each and every one in alater section <strong>of</strong> this book.Clean Drinking Water for Schools is a programmethat provides a basic human need and has animmediate impact on the lives <strong>of</strong> the children andthe villages in which they live. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Rotary</strong> <strong>Club</strong> <strong>of</strong><strong>Bangkok</strong> <strong>South</strong> is proud to be involved in this vitalinitiative.Sponsorship, both corporate and personal, isalso a key element <strong>of</strong> this programme, with manysponsors returning year after year. <strong>The</strong> Australian<strong>The</strong> Water Team: Volker Betsch, Marco Casanova,<strong>Rotary</strong> <strong>Club</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Bangkok</strong> <strong>South</strong> <strong>Yearbook</strong> <strong>2012</strong> 31
