ROTARYINTERNATIONALSakuji TanakaPresident, Rotary International 2012-2013The concept of peace is one that differs among people andcultures. It may mean personal tranquility, happiness in thefamily, and a sense of inner contentment — or it may meana situation of safety where basic human needs are met.through service. In Rotary, service is much more than a sideline or anoccasional pursuit. It is a way of life. It is an approach thatemphasizes considerationand caring for others, andleads to harmony amongpeople. Through embracingservice in all aspects of ourlives, we foster a spirit of others, and choose peace. In the 2012-13 Rotary year, peace will be our focus and our goal. I will ask all Rotariansto actively work for Peace Through Service, beginning withevery individual, family, club, district, region, and nation.A belief in the power of service lies at the very heart ofRotary. By making service our priority, we put the needs ofothers above our own and transform our perspective. Wewe feel a greater drive to reach out, to do what we can tohelp others live more happily. We become more generouswith our time and resources, and more open to new waysof thinking. Instead of trying to change others, we recognizethat everyone and everything has something to teach us —and every day, there are new ways for us to grow.Through service, we become more tolerant of our differences, and more grateful for the people in our lives. Our sense ofgratitude drives us to understand others better and to seethe good in everyone. Through better understanding, welearn to respect others. With mutual respect, we live withothers in peace. Our Rotary service fosters peace in many ways. In our clubsand our districts, we work to bring health, safety, and humandignity to communities around the world. As individuals, weare inspired to value cooperation over competition, and thewe recognize that none of us is perfect and that each of ushas something to learn from others. The motto that is unique to Rotary, Service Above Self, describes the highest form of service. It is a path that anyonecan walk — a path that Rotarians have built, and that thewhole world can follow. It is a path that leads to greaterkindness and contentment, tolerance and understanding. When we embrace Peace Through Service, we strive for agreater peace for ourselves, and for our world.Sakuji TanakaPresident, Rotary International, 2012-13Rotary Club of Bangkok South Yearbook 2012 7

ROTARY INTERNATIONALDISTRICT 3350Supong ChayutsahakijDISTRICT GOVERNOR, 2011-2012With the Rotary Club of Bangkok Southhaving now celebrated its half century community service, you are rememberedas part of a historic legacy … of sharingdreams, hopes and changing humanity forthe better in the Kingdom of Thailand.Congratulations to outgoing President MarkButters and RCBS members for successfully“Reaching within to Embrace Humanity”!And we greatly appreciate your work to helpco-host the 2012 RI Convention in Bangkokon May 6-9, that successful and great honorto the history of Rotary in Thailand.Incoming President Nick Pisalyaput willbegin a brand new chapter on July 1, 2012,to embark on the year of “Peace ThroughService”. I earnestly advocate wideningour circles of compassion to embrace evencloser to our hearts our New Generations, the physically and mentally challenged, andthe underprivileged.Supong ChayutsahakijDistrict Governor 2011-2012Alex P. MavroDISTRICT GOVERNOR, 2012-2013The Rotary family was strengthened when theRotary club of Bangkok South joined our rankson 7 August 1961. Since that auspicious date, ourmembers have worked tirelessly to make our cluban outstanding example of Service Above Self. There is much to be proud of in our Club’s history:with a service spirit, a spirit that is invigorating andcontagious – perhaps explaining why BangkokSouth has been the District’s largest club for thepast decade.Over the coming year, you are being asked tocontinue with the same energy and creativity. emphasize projects that are sustainable, whichmeans that they can carry on without the Club’sfurther intervention. Capacity building will be akey component of every proposal in the 2012-2013 Rotary year.We will all remember this past year for the historic103rd Rotary International Convention, a stunningsuccess thanks to the hard work of each andevery Rotarian in Thailand over the many yearsof preparation. For all the superb work that Rotary has donein the past, there remain challenges in thepresent. These challenges are not unique toBangkok South, but rather face all Rotarians, everywhere: the challenge of recruiting, training, and motivating the members who will continue structuring sustainable service projects whereverconcerning Rotary’s mission and successes. One good way to meet these challenges is toReach Within to Embrace Humanity as outgoingRotary International President Kalyan Banerjeehas suggested. And in so doing, we can beginto appreciate the wisdom in Rotary InternationalPresident-Elect Sakuji Tanaka’s advice that westrive to achieve Peace Through Service. With high expectations,Alex P. MESSAGE FROMTHE OUTGOING PRESIDENTMark ButtersRCBS President, 2011-2012Dear Fellow Rotarians,It does not seem to be one year since I wrote my commentsfor the 2011 Yearbook, looking forward to the year ahead. It has certainly been a very eventful twelve months – the Convention, in addition to my own 50th Birthday and thearrival of twin sons. But at the same time, it has been avery enjoyable year and I have to thank all of our membersfor pulling together to make it a successful one. While it isnot possible to mention everyone in such limited space, Ishould highlight a few notable contributions.I would particularly like to thank the outgoing Boardof Directors for their contributions during the year – Fundraising Director, should receive a special mention as hemanaged to exceed budget in spite of all of the challengesprior to the original date, the re-arranged Coins on Silomcame in at just over THB 2 million and it was pleasing to only a few weeks later, came the successful annual charitygolf tournament. Rtn Vinai Phuttinin once again providedthe prizes for our weekly charity lucky draw “Cosmos forSecretary, helping to maintain order at our monthly BoardMeetings and delivering minutes of these meetings in atimely manner, while Rtn Adrian Topham ensured that weUnder Rtn Rakesh Sodhia, Communications Director, ourPR reached new levels, with regular features in the BangkokPost, Pattaya Mail and Big Chilli. South Wind was deliveredon time every week and our website maintained up to date, while former member Gareth Marshall arranged for me tobe interviewed by the Bangkok Post. Rtn David Record, our Service Projects Director, ensured that we had plenty ofsuitable service projects on which to spend the funds raisedby Rtn Doug, while Rtn Jon Plate, The Rotary FoundationDirector, maintained our full allocation of matching grants. Our Administration Director, Rtn Dean Outerson, arranged anample supply of Fellowship events during the year, includinglast year’s Installation Dinner, the hugely successful 50thAnniversary Dinner and the Christmas Dinner Cruise, whileIPP Andrew MacPherson chaired the Program Committee, ensuring that we maintained a strong weekly program ofboth entertaining and informative speakers, covering a widerange of topics. As President-Elect, Nick Pisalyaput alsoassumed the role of Membership Director and maintained asteady stream of new members, including three under theage of 40, while SAA, Rtn Rudy van der Hoeven, helped tokeep order during our regular meetings (with able back upfrom Rtn Adrian Topham). I would also like to thank bothVice Presidents, Rtn Prasert Mangkornkarn and Rtn MichaelDoyle, for their support during the year and for standing infor me on the few occasions that I was unavailable. It was particularly pleasing to see several Past Presidentsplaying leading roles during the year: PP Philip Baechtoldstepped forward to chair the Flood Rehabilitation Wongsaengarunsri helped to manage our matching grantsand provided able assistance to PP Vibul PattarathammasNart Liuchareon produced numerous sponsors for Coinson Silom and PP Don Lavoie proved invaluable in helpingand 50th Anniversary Dinners. Which all goes to show thatat Bangkok South there isAnd of course, no report on the year would be completewithout mention of Khun Ratikorn Suekumnerd, who onceagain (with kind permission from PP Nart) provided ableassistance to make Coins on Silom a success, and Rtn GaryWhite, for all of his administrative support despite sufferingThere was, however, a touch of sadness during the year, asKhun Prakai Chongsithipol retired after more than 40 years’dedicated service to the Club, and it was no surprise tosee so many current and former members in attendance ather farewell lunch at the Dusit Thani. We welcomed KhunKomenvadee Ridthikerd as our new Club AdministrativeManager in January 2012.The aforementioned RI Convention also proceeded smoothlyand was a great success. The RI and Host OrganisingCommittee (which included IPP Andrew MacPherson, DGEAlex Mavro and PE Nick Pisalyaput) have to be commendedon the arrangements, as feedback from delegates wasgenerally positive and it was very pleasing to note that anumber of our members took the opportunity to attend this,Finally, I would like to wish Incoming DG Alex Mavro andIncoming President Nick Pisalyaput all the best for thecoming year. I hope that you have as much enjoyment as IYours in Rotary,Mark ButtersPresident 2011-2012Rotary Club of Bangkok South Yearbook 2012 11

MESSAGE FROMTHE INCOMING PRESIDENTNICK PISALYAPUTRCBS President, 2012-2013Dear Fellow Rotarians and friends, welcomed into our Club by President Nart Liuchareonas the youngest member of the Club. I remember thenfeeling a little out of place, not quite knowing what theClub was all about despite having been thoroughlybriefed by my sponsor, former Rotarian Ian Fenwick. That said, even before becoming a member, I was truly contribute towards the betterment of those lessprivileged than ourselves … all the while having a greattime doing so. And, after several years of serving onthe Club’s Board, I continue to be impressed by theprofessionalism and higher standards in which we asa club conduct our affairs – the level of transparencyand responsibility towards our stakeholders is a lessonto which both the private and public sectors woulddo very well to aspire. I am convinced these traits, combined with unrivalled fellowship, have formed thesolid foundation that contributed greatly to our Club’scountless successes for the past 50 years and musttherefore continue for our Club to excel well into ournext half century. Now, 5 years later, with a teensy bit more Rotaryexperience under my ever expanding belt, yet not(and, some may say, unenviable) position of beinghonoured with the opportunity of leading our Club inits 51st year. As most, if not all, Past Presidents willundoubtedly agree, saying that one’s year as Presidentwill be a challenge is an understatement. Yet it is ayear that I somehow look forward to with enthusiasm, especially in the knowledge that I am backed by thesupport of my enthusiastic and passionate Boardthat I have grown to increasingly rely upon as 1st Julydraws ever nearer. I hope, as the year progresses, Ishall also have the support of all our members whosecontributions, advice, and criticisms, however harsh, are always welcomed and sought – as the new DistrictGovernor, our very own Al Mavro, wisely reminds us: themost important people in any club are the members. Icertainly share that sentiment wholeheartedly and hopeit will be apparent to all through the actions of my Boardand myself.I cannot end without thanking the 2011-12 Board fortheir hard work in ensuring that the Club had verysuccessfully navigated an extremely eventful year. Inparticular, I am deeply indebted to President MarkButters for his constant advice and reminders in a yearthat has seen me abroad more than not, and I lookforward to continuing working with him on my Boardin his capacity as the Immediate Past President. Also,I would be remiss not to thank a very special manand a dear, dear friend, Gary White, whose growlsof disapproval, threats of catastrophe of galacticproportions, outright screams and shouts of frustration– all done in the nicest possible manner with the bestof intentions, I am certain – have only accelerated mypreparedness for the challenge of the year ahead.Lastly, on very personal front, I would like to bothapologise to and thank my partner for having put upwith me and my passions for all these tumultuous years.Perhaps I can make it up to her somehow …soon.Yours In Rotary,Nick PisalyaputPresident 2012-2013Rotary Club of Bangkok South Yearbook 2012 13

A CHAT WITHPRESIDENT ELECTNICK PISALYAPUTRotary is part of our lives, but it’s not the centre of the universe. It is ONE of our responsibilities. If you agree to do something, you do it. If you can’t commit to something, don’t say you’ll doit. I’ve learned that in my time in Rotary. Once you volunteer, it’sno longer just optional. It becomes an obligation, as importantas something you’re being paid to do.Do you have any goals or themes for the year? years, and build a foundation for the future. The turnover ofof our Club are sound. So we need to maintain our activitiesat the level that we are used to.So is that another theme – “back to basics”? younger members. We’ve just recently inducted 2 newmembers who are under 40. Considering our future, we needto attract new members AND younger members. The makeupa brief to explore new ideas and ways to attract youngermembers. We’ll try – and see what happens. Also, at a recent dinner with the new Board, we talkedabout how we want everyone to have fun. Of course, we still to be followed, especially considering we’re spending otherpeople’s money. But we also need to have fun, as a club. Howdo we make the club more enjoyable for everyone? That’sour challenge. I’m not talking about making changes justfor change’s sake. Maybe there just need to be some smalltweaks that will make the difference. Why are you a Rotarian? For me, the best part of being in our Club is being able tocontribute to a better community. There are so many peoplewho are less comfortable than we are, and we can help. Whatwe do as a Club gives value to why we all work so hard. If I’mcomfortable, people in my community should be comfortabletoo. What has being a member of Bangkok South meant to you?I’m an introvert. But the number of people in Rotary and inour Club that I consider to be my friends actually exceedsall my other friends. The genuine friendship and fellowshipthat is extended by Rotarians around the world and thatI’ve experienced as a Rotarian has been amazing. It wasn’texpected, but it’s always appreciated. It’s been a real delightto meet so many Rotarians, just because I have a Rotary pinon my lapel. In Thailand, the bond among Thai clubs is alsoimpressive. For me, it’s great to experience that goodwill andwarmth from other Rotarians in Thailand.Tell me something that no one in Bangkok South knowsabout you.I’m Thai, born and bred (laughing).Probably what I do. I’m an entrepreneur and educator. I’m aand I see myself moving into education more and more. At themoment, I teach new venture business plan development andlead teams to business plan competitions in Asia and NorthAmerica. I also lecture on Corporate Social Responsibility andsustainability studies, and I’m Head of Sasin’s SustainabilityCentre. We are trying to integrate sustainability into corebusiness thinking, instead of it just being a sideshow, an addonto corporate thinking. Sustainability is the new norm of doingRotary Club of Bangkok South Yearbook 2012 17

TREASURERANNUAL REPORT 2011-2012Adrian TophamTreasurerand Loss Statement and even Balance Sheet is somewhatmisleading. The vast majority of the funds in our accountsare held in trust or are designated for charitable purposes.Only a tiny fraction of our total annual income and outgo can rather than reviewing performance as a whole, it is far morepertinent to discuss the results of the various funds that makeup the club’s operations. This is done below, with a summary following.administration is run. For the 11 months of the 2011/12 Rotarya budgeted year to date surplus of THB 86. The shortfall is dueto lower member fees because of lower member numbers,an extra month’s salary from the overlap when Khun Prakairetired, and various expense overruns, mostly to do with the90 versus budgeted surplus of THB 14. COMMUNICATIONSANNUAL REPORT 2011-2012RAKESH SODHIACommunications DirectorIt was actually quite late in the lead up to the 2011-12 year that Iwas asked to head up the Communications Committee (ComComas it is known), when Rtn David Armstrong had to leave the clubdue to work commitments outside the country. But I was extremelyfortunate to inherit a Committee that was not only substantially thesame as that for 2010-11, but which had put in an awful lot ofgroundwork under that year’s Director, Gareth Marshall.Tim Cornwall continued his sterling efforts in producing ourmagazine, the South Wind, week in and week out. The publicationis fully self-funding from ad sales, and Tim looks after the contentand layout in what can only be called a labour of love. Tim has verykindly agreed to continue in this role in the coming year. The SouthWind now has over 2,400 issues to its credit. It issues electronicallyeach week and is sent to all members and those non-membersregistered on our mailing list. A small number are printed each weekand are available at our Friday luncheon meetings. Our Club website has continued to develop, with the additionof pages on Matching Grant Projects as well as a functioningcalendar plug-in. We can now add and amend events so that theyappear in very brief form on a small calendar on the Home page, with more details of each contained on the Events Calendar page.Rtn Gary White has been keeping this up-to-date and, of course, like any database or calendar, it is only as good as the informationgiven. The same goes for the website itself – it is a huge andnever-ending job trying to keep it current. We do rely in part onmembers to let us know of anomalies or items that need updating. is now working on a register of passwords and log-in details forthe club’s ever-expanding portfolio of software systems and socialmedia sites. This will be copied and stored in several safe placesreview and up-date, and several are now on the website, along withthe 2010 and 2011 Yearbooks. Our sincere thanks to Veritas for theirdonation of artwork and layout services for many of these. We have continued to up-date and circulate quarterly a list ofmember contact details (mobile/email), but we are reliant uponmembers to keep us up-to-date with their current details.Committee Members:Our Club Member database has also been transferred to Bentosoftware after the old Rotary International one started corruptingdata – and Rotary no longer supports its old Secretarial andFinancial systems.Another area needing attention this year (and next) is our ClubPhoto library. This is kept on Flickr, but had not been up-datedfor some time. Major events were there, but not weekly meetingphotos and lesser events. A mechanism was put in place to tag, catalogue and upload all photos onto Flickr, but has not workedout. This needs the concerted attention of the incoming ComComteam to get it working properly.External communications this year have been probably thebest in years, if perhaps ever, thanks in great part to the effortsof President Mark Butters, who has cultivated relations withpublications like the Bangkok Post, the Pattaya Mail and TV, andBig Chilli. Events like Coins, the Paul Harris Dinner and Kids Outhave received extensive coverage, and President Mark himselfwas the subject of an extensive interview (focussing on the Club, not himself, I should add) in the Bangkok Post. Many thanks toformer member Gareth Marshall for arranging this. Soon to be IPPMark has kindly agreed to continue with this job on the incomingComCom Committee. The Club Yearbook for 2011 was put together by former RtnDavid Armstrong and Rtn Gary White, and published by Rtn Ravi’sSehgal Group. It was very well received and was one of the morecomplete and extensive ones we have done. This year’s book isbeing done by Rtns Morgan Perkins and Gary White, and is againpublished by the Sehgal Group. Our thanks to Rtn Ravi for his andhis staff’s sterling efforts in doing that. And this report would not be complete without mention of theClub’s 50th anniversary History Book, whose production wasoverseen by a team led by PP Maarten Worp and published byRtn Jim Fowler’s Veritas. Our sincere thanks to them, and RtnDean Outerson, for all the work they put into making it such anexcellent publication.Nor would it be complete without my sincere thanks to all theComCom team: PE Nick Pisalyaput, Dean Outerson, GarethMarshall, Gary White, Ian Morris, Tim Cornwall and, latterly forthe 2012 Yearbook, Morgan Perkins. Our best wishes to incomingDirector Junior Shaw and his team for another successful year.NickPisalyaputDeanOutersonGary WhiteIan MorrisTim CornwallRotary Club of Bangkok South Yearbook 2012 23

FUND RAISINGANNUAL REPORT 2011-2012Douglas RiachFund Raising DirectorWith the Rotary International Convention this year being held inBangkok, and with all that would entail for our club and members,we decided this year to try and concentrate all our efforts into twomain fund raising events. Any others would be a welcome bonus. Our fund raising year has been both busy and fraught, what witharranging our biggest event, Coins on Silom, in the midst ofbecause we felt that holding the event during such a terrible timefor the Thai people would send out the wrong message. We weredelighted that none of our sponsors abandoned us, but stayedin to support our new date in January. What a great gesture, end our grateful thanks to all the team, sponsors, and the BMAfor their great support, which helped us raise over 2 million baht. Our budget here was 1.8 million, so well done to everyone. And aspecial thanks to 3M Thailand for their event sponsorship, for theOur next big event was our annual Charity Golf day, which washeld in March. Coming so soon after Coins, we did wonder attimes if we could pull this off. We were very fortunate that Ricohagain stayed with us as event sponsor, even after they had toon a slightly reduced budget, it is testimony to our Rotary workthat a company as large as Ricoh wanted to be part of this highlyimportant fund raising day. Just three weeks before the eventwe were still in doubt about raising not just sponsors but alsoplayers, as there was a host of golf charity days at this time (manyhaving been postponed from the end of last year with coursesunder water). In the end we managed to get almost 150 players, host of club members coming along to push the event. We set abudget of 600K – and raised 672K. This was only possible with allthe team working together, and we are also lucky to have a goodfriend in Les Walsh, who over the years has helped make this golfevent one that players want to support. Our club’s main annual project is of course Clean Drinking WaterSystems for Schools. This is a hugely successful programme. Ourand we are delighted that year to date we have raised over 1.5million, against a budget of 1 million. We will shortly pass the500-system mark, so well done the water boys. Our other sponsorships, like Kids Out and Library Fellowships, are coming along but the Library Fellowships need more promotion. With a budget set at 300K, we are forecasting only 237K.We are also very lucky to have Cosmos bar, through our memberbottle of kindly donated whisky. Year to date we have raised 250K.By the end of the year our forecast is 273K, as our weekly averageis up 8%. Great donations and very much appreciated. Our total net income so far this year is 4,784K. Our budget for theyear is 4200K, and forecast is 4,817K. With an expense/incomeunder trying times.I would like to personally thank all of the teams involved in bothCoins and Golf. They are:Coins. Gary White who, along with Khun Ratikorn i.e. Khun Tang, put in so much effort into the success of our main fund raisingevent, and have done so for many years. Fellow members do notunderestimate this strong team.Raising the funds through sponsorship, was a strong team andspecial thanks to Alastair Timblick, Tyrone Jenkins and JamesCummiskeyGolf. Sponsorship was done by Jamie, Alastair and Tyrone again, along with Arie Bloed, Stuart Lucani, Chip Bowness, and JuniorShaw. Many fellow club members, I also thank you for yourpersonal contributions. To all who helped in the background of both successful events, thecounting room, the manpower, logistics through Mike Ellis, and toall sponsors, a very big thank you from my heart.COINS ON SILOM (27/JAN/2012)ANNUAL GOLF DAY (1/MAR/2012)COSMOS FOR CHARITYWATER SPONSORSHIPSOTHER SPONSORSHIPS(LIBRARY KITS, KIDS OUT)OTHER (INCLUDING AUCTIONS)24 Rotary Club of Bangkok South Yearbook 2012
