MOUNT SINAI HOSPITAL, ONTARIOIn 2012, for the third year in a row, <strong>Mount</strong> Sinai Hospital was selected as one of Canada's BestDiversity Employers and also a Best Employer for New Canadians. Here are some key facts <strong>about</strong> thehospital and what it offers with respect to diversity:Workforce Census<strong>Mount</strong> Sinai conducted a workforce census in 2007 and will be conducting one again in 2012. Theworkforce census provides a comprehensive look at the total number of employees and data within thehospital, including percentages of those who immigrated to Canada. This helps the organization developintelligence around their workforce profile so they can better support their staff and reflect the populationthey are serving.Provision of Language ServicesWith a diverse workforce, <strong>Mount</strong> Sinai is able to provide language considerations in upwards of 40different languages.Human Rights and Health Equity (HR & HE) OfficeThis office was set up to manage and oversee the hospital's human rights, diversity, and health equitypolicy and goals.<strong>Mount</strong> Sinai has established a number of committees, frameworks and <strong>strategies</strong> that support diversity intheir complex environment:• Human Rights and Health Equity (HR & HE) committee: supports the development of<strong>strategies</strong>, policies and programs• <strong>Mount</strong> Sinai’s HR & HE strategic plan encompasses the following goals to ensure lastingimpact from their diversity and inclusion efforts:o Embed health equity and human rights in all the hospitals policies and programso Ensure a patient, family and staff experience that is respectful and free from harassmentand discriminationo Be a leader in human rights and health equity in health care and the communityo Identify and reduce health inequities to provide better health outcomes• Corporate Competency Framework – <strong>Mount</strong> Sinai has performance indicators on equityincorporated into and used in their annual performance management process.• Fair Employment Policy – <strong>Mount</strong> Sinai has a “Fair Employment Opportunity Policy” whichaims to ensure recruitment of qualified individuals on the basis of merit. All hiring managers andsupervisors are required to attend training on this policy• An on-line course on harassment and violence prevention, mandatory for all staff bi-annually.• <strong>Internationally</strong> Educated Professionals (IEPs) Strategy – <strong>Mount</strong> Sinai has an IEP Strategy toattract, integrate and retain qualified internationally educated professionals to employmentopportunities at MSH.


Diversity and Human Rights TrainingNew hires must complete a full day of diversity and human rights training within the first year ofemployment, in addition to mandatory cultural competency trainingPartnerships• Connected to community organizations: Toronto Region Immigrant Employment Council(TRIEC – www.triec.ca) and Career Edge Organization (https://www.careeredge.ca/en/home)• <strong>Internationally</strong> Educated Social Work Professionals Bridging Program at Ryerson University• Bridge Training Program for <strong>Internationally</strong> Psychologists and Allied Mental Health Professional• Participate in the CARE Centre for <strong>Internationally</strong> Educated Nurses Program• Work with counterparts at other hospitals (i.e. St. Michael’s Hospital) and share leading practices.
