a gliding record. He made his first everlaunch in the TIl on 21st April, 1964,and complet,ed his Silver C OD the 27thSeptember, 1964 - a shade under sixmonths. In this fine effort he was verylucky to be a.ble to fly from R.A.F.Bicester during his summer leave, wherehe completed the duration and heightlegs of his Silver C. The distance legwas flown on the 27th September in the<strong>Club</strong> Olympia from Yeovilton to Upavon.The season was nicely rounded offin <strong>No</strong>vember when John FieldeD, whoso successfully ran the Naval Competitionat Dunkeswen, was the Guest ofHonour at our Annual Dinner.Despite the problems which flyingfrom an operational airfield entails, wehope for an even better season in 1965.MENDIPS(R.A.F. Weston-Super-Mare)AVING completed our first year ofH not uneventful operations, it is timewe made ourselves known to everyone.The <strong>Club</strong> caters for the R.A.F. person·nel of Locking in particular and allR.A.F.G.S.A. members in general. Flyingis carried out at nearby Weston­Super-Mar·e Airport on Tuesday andSaturday afternoons and all day Sunday.Our start was a shaky one. with oneserviceable winch and tractor, of dubiousancestry and doubtful future; a T-21 andTutor. two instructors-AlIan Lovelandas C.Fl., and Jim Martin assisting. Duringthe year Peter Purdie and Ted Hallgave valuable help with flying training,but not for long. The usual servicedisease struck and resulted in Peter goingto Labuan and Ted to "Civvy Street".Allan also moved on to pastures green.We were lucky to obtain the servicesof John Williamson as C.F.I.. so ourcontinued operation is assured for thetime being. Although the instructionalstaff has dwindled, the membership hasgrown steadily as also has our equipmenl.We now boast a T-21, T-3I. Tutorand Grunau 3, two diesel and one petrolWinch, two tractors and a Landroverret rieve vehicle.The last year has seen many improvementsand a training achievement that ismore than fair. with more first solos thanany other O.S.A. <strong>Club</strong>. We look forwardto 1965 with eager anticipation -and afirm' resolve to improve on the past.Should any of you be in this area, comeround and make yourselves known. 'Pete Rickwood joined us from theEast Midlands, and together with JimR08.crs, has done a magnificent job ingettmg oar Granau back into service.We are continuing the circuit trainingaJ:!d our work in the hangar through thewmt~r months, with a view to some goodsoarmg next season.R.
