The secondone we shared with few: a surge ofsuccess at the Regicnals.Cambridge pilots took part in fourregional contests. John Firth won theDunstable meeting in a Skylark 3F. andColin Pennycuick the Royal NavalG.S.A.'s contest at Dunkeswell in a Ka-6.In the Western Regionals, John Brennerand Siegfrid Neumann came 2nd in the<strong>Club</strong>'s Olympia 2, and in the <strong>No</strong>rthernChampionships Lionel Alexander andGeorge Whitfield gained 5th place inthe Olympia 460.Our mo~t successful pilot, of course,was Jobn Firth. Apart from winning thefirst contest in which he took part, hecompleted his Gold C with a 19()-miledog leg from Cambridge to Moreton via<strong>No</strong>rwich. For futl measure he proceededto bag tbe V.I(. 'ZOO-km. Triangle SpeedRecord on 20th AugustThe larger part of our mileage in 1964was flown in August and September. Amemorable day was nnd August whenseven sailplanes starting from Cambridgecovered a total of 715 miles. One of theseven pilots was Simon Redman whocompleted a 152-mile out-and-return tf'Witney in his Skylark 4.At the end of September GerardDowning flew tbe Swallow to Woodbridgeand thereby gained his Silver Cdistance. The last cross-country of theyear was flown on 10th October, a 52­mile triangle. Local soaring at Cambr,idgecontinued until 7th <strong>No</strong>vemberwhen R,ichard Fortescue reached 5,000 ft.in cloud, flying the Olympia 2.65
