San Diego Woodturners Page 7 Ocrtober 2010Get Ready Now for Gallery 21Once again, our club has secured Gallery 21 at SpanishVillage in Balboa Park for a month starting rightafter the December Nights event. If you are unfamiliarwith the opportunity, our Club occupies theGallery 21 site to display and SELL our woodturningproducts. This is a great chance for you to recoupsome small amount of the time, materials and effortyou put into your woodworking. It is also and opportunityfor you to get a feel for what the public wantsand is willing to pay for your products! The Gallery is open from 11AM until 4 PM daily unlessotherwise directed by the Spanish Village group(It is usually closed Christmas Day and New Years). The Gallery is “manned” by at least two club memberseach day. I will have a signup sheet ready forpeople to “volunteer” for positions during the month. If you want to display and sell your work at Gallery21 we require that you either sign up for at least oneday or make arrangements with someone else to workfor you. We feel this is only fair in that many of usend up working three or four days or more during themonth to adequately man the Gallery. Each year for the past 5 or 6, there have been differentitems that have been the “big sellers.” Someyears it is salad bowls. Another year it was smallhollow forms. One year the biggest seller was refrigeratormagnets and earring dolls. Another yearit was kaleidoscopes (we could not keep enough instock that year but the next year, we sold very few,if any). Pens and bottle stoppers sell sometimesbetter than others. Almost every year, items suchas small bowls and items priced in the just under$100 price seem to go well. However, every yearwe seem to manage to sell some items priced in theover $300 range. Recognize that most people comingto Spanish Village are looking for something fora gift for Christmas or for a friend or family. Theyoften are looking for a memento of their trip to SanDiego. Consequently, fewer high priced items aresold regularly but that should not dissuade you fromputting your best bowls, platters and hollow formup for sale. In addition to being an opportunity forall our club members to expose their products to thecommercial world, it is, foremost, an opportunity toadvertise our Club and our hobby. The general arrangement for showing at the Galleryis that for an entrance fee of $15, you get an areaapproximately 15 inches by 15 inches. Again, generally, you can enter three bowls, vases, platters, etc.for your $15. If some of you items are sold, we arehappy to have you “resupply” your spot. If you makesmaller items such as bottle stoppers, pens, ornaments, etc. you are allowed essentially as many aswill fit in a nice display. In recent years, we have experienced problems withartists pricing their products too cheaply – sometimesfor the purpose of just clearing out your home supply. We have found this to be very counterproductive toour members overall as it really “cheapens” the workwe all do. This year, we intend to “strongly encourage”you to price your offerings at a fair market price.During the day we set up the Gallery and take in yourwoodturning, we will have “experienced” Club Membersavailable to assist you in your pricing. We will have a lathe available at the Gallery forturning demonstrations. We find that turning topsor other small items just outside really draws peopleinto the Gallery and spurs business. Consequently, you will not necessarily be “bored” for the wholeday.I will have much more information on our Gallery21 effort but please come to the October meetingwith some dates in mind in December and the firstweek of January that you can volunteer for “manningthe Gallery.”Scotty

San Diego Woodturners Page 8 October 2010My Allan Batty Staircase CollaborativeAllan Batty is known aroundthe world as a Master Craftsmanfor his work as a spindleturner in England. He has stayedwith my husband Maury and Iseveral times recently during hisvisits here in California. Allanasked me during his last visit ifhe could make the balusters andnewel posts for a new staircaseduring his next visit. I, of course, jumped at the chance to workwith Allan on a new staircase.Josiah Heinz is one of our memberswho work’s as an architecturalcontractor. He makesand installs staircases. He hastaken both of Allan’s classes atmy shop and offered to prep thethe way. After Allan finished with his3 day class, we got started onthe balusters. Allan selected aRegency pattern he has usedfor years while turning “in thetrade”. I wanted to be able toassist with some part of thisendeavor, so we decided to adda twist to every third spindle. While the guys worked on thebalusters, I got to work on thetwists. I know that twists takea long time to complete so I’msetting a goal of finishing oneper day. I can only work on theseon my days off so stand by formore of these.Allan and Josiah worked out thelogistics of turning the newelposts. This is a 6x6 inch by 4foot long piece of solid cherry. In other words, it weighs a lot. They needed to drill a centerhole in the end, so they workedit out and away they went. Allanstarted out with the layout ofthe post and determined whicharea needed to be turned first. AsAllan says, a spindle is nothingmore than beads and coves butthe hard part is which one goeswhere. I know now that sizedoes matter!! Turning somethingthat large and heavy is a feat initself but it worked out beautifully.wood for my new staircase if hecould work with Allan on a customstaircase. Josiah was able tolocate some great cherry lumberfor a great price and we were onAfter the post was turned Josiahadded flutes to the bottomportion. On the balusters this isthe area I am adding twists to.During one of his classes, Allanshowed Josiah how to make aneasy to use fluting jig. He used(Continued on page 9)

San Diego Woodturners Page 9 October 2010(Staircase - continued from page 8)this jig on the Newel post andit turned out beautiful too. Itried to do one of the flutes but Ifigured out quickly that reachingover a post and holding the jigdown steady would be difficultsince I am vertically challenged.I left it up to Josiah who did itflawlessly. The top of the post was next. Wetried a shape that was a little toosquatty for Allan’s taste but hetried two other versions on somescrap oak that looked great.Allan used a method where heturns a dowel on the bottom ofthe top of the post, with an insidemount chuck hold to allowyou to finish the entire Newelpost top. Now it’s automaticallywill be a lot more custom staircasesin his future. I will sendout pictures when everything isinstalled. This has been a great experienceand I hope to see Allan againnext year but with health issuesyou never know. He is a wonderfulhouseguest and terrificperson and is welcome to comeback any time. If you have thechance to work with some of ourprofessional turners in a classthis is valuable experience andyou may never have again.centered in the top, centered onthe post hole you already drilled. We weren’t able to finish all 24of the balusters and the 3 NewelPosts but we are off to a greatstart. Josiah was able to haveall his questions answered by aspindle turning master and willbe able to finish the rest of thestaircase while honing all of hisnew found skill. Allan feels Josiahis a natural at turning and inparticular with spindles and withAllan’s instruction I think there
