POSTGRADUATE COURSES: GENERAL INFORMATIONN.B. It is important that students know <strong>the</strong> general <strong>University</strong>regulations and <strong>the</strong> Faculty regulations that apply to <strong>the</strong>ir studies.1.1 General <strong>University</strong> RegulationsThe general <strong>University</strong> regulations that apply to all students andfaculties are set out in <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> Calendar Book.1.2 Faculty RegulationsFaculty regulations that relate specifically to <strong>the</strong> degrees <strong>of</strong>fered by <strong>the</strong>Faculty <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Humanities are in this book.1.3 Degrees <strong>of</strong>feredThe three levels <strong>of</strong> postgraduate qualifications <strong>of</strong>fered by <strong>the</strong> Faculty <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> Humanities are(1) Baccalaureus Artium Honores (B.A.Hons.), Baccalaureus SocietatisScientiae Honores (B.Soc.Sc.Hons.),(2) Magister Artium (M.A.), Magister Societatis Scientiae (M.Soc.Sc.),and(3) Philosophiae Doctor (Ph.D.).1.4 General admission requirements to postgraduate coursesAs a general rule, students are admitted to postgraduate studies and toeach higher level <strong>of</strong> postgraduate study only if <strong>the</strong>y fulfil <strong>the</strong> universityrequirements for registration, have completed <strong>the</strong> preliminary degreewith a mark <strong>of</strong> 60% or more, and are accepted to <strong>the</strong> course <strong>the</strong>y wishto study by <strong>the</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> Department.1.5 The B.A.Hons. and B.Soc.Sc.Hons. degreesUnless o<strong>the</strong>rwise specified, <strong>the</strong> B.A.Hons. and B.Soc.Hons. degrees area one-year full-time or a two-year part-time study in a particular field. Ingeneral, <strong>the</strong> degrees require students to select and study courses forexamination, and to research and write a short mini-dissertation. Ingeneral, too, <strong>the</strong> B.A.Hons. and B.Soc.Sc.Hons. form <strong>the</strong> first year <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> two-year structured M.A./M.Soc.Sc. degrees. 1.6 The M.A. and M.Soc.Sc. degreesStudents generally have a choice between(1) a two-year structured M.A. and M.Soc.Sc. and(2) an M.A./M.Soc.Sc. by dissertation.(1) The two-year, full-time, structured M.A./M.Soc.Sc. require studentsto select and study courses for examination, and to research andwrite a mini-dissertation. In general, students can register for <strong>the</strong>structured M.A./M.Soc.Sc. degree immediately after completing <strong>the</strong>B.A./B.Soc.Sc. degree, with <strong>the</strong> B.A.Hons./B.Soc.Sc.Hons. degreeas an "exit" at <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first year.(2) The M.A./M.Soc.Sc. by dissertation requires students to write asubstantial research essay on a topic agreed upon with <strong>the</strong> Head <strong>of</strong>Department or a supervisor he appoints. In certain courses anumber <strong>of</strong> published or publishable articles are accepted instead <strong>of</strong>a dissertation.As <strong>the</strong> specific requirements <strong>of</strong> courses differ, students must acquaint<strong>the</strong>mselves carefully with <strong>the</strong> requirements <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> course <strong>the</strong>y choose.1.7 The Ph.D. degreeUnless o<strong>the</strong>rwise specified, a Doctorate is awarded to a M.A./M.Soc.Sc.graduate who writes a research <strong>the</strong>sis <strong>of</strong> noteworthy substance. Incertain courses a body <strong>of</strong> published or publishable articles are acceptedinstead <strong>of</strong> a <strong>the</strong>sis.
