BETH TFILOH BULLETIN january 2010 TEVET-shevat 5770School NewsBT receives Good Neighboraward from BaltimoreCounty<strong>Beth</strong> <strong>Tfiloh</strong> was one of five schoolsin Baltimore County, and the onlynon public school, to receive the 2009Good Neighbor Week award presentedtoday in Towson by Baltimore CountyExecutive Jim Smith.According to the Baltimore Countynews release, "The event honoredindividuals and organizationsnominated for their volunteer serviceand for serving as 'bridge builders'among people of different races andreligions. Now in its fourteenth year,Good Neighbor Week is dedicated topromoting harmony and good deedsamong neighbors."At the award ceremonies, CountyExecutive Smith said, "We are allenriched by the compassion andcommitment of this year's GoodNeighbor Week award winners."Mrs. Nina Wand, Lower SchoolPrincipal, nominated <strong>Beth</strong> <strong>Tfiloh</strong>'s 4thgrade teaching team for the award lastfall. She described the "B'tzelem Elokim"(the spirit of G-d that is in everyone)curriculum which has been incorporatedinto the exchange program between<strong>Beth</strong> <strong>Tfiloh</strong> and St. Paul's School as thebasis for the award.In her letter of nomination, Mrs. Wanddescribed details of the <strong>Beth</strong> <strong>Tfiloh</strong>-St.Paul's exchange program as follows:“This year we joined St. Paul’s for aMartin Luther King Day celebration,where a group from the Smithsonianre-enacted scenes about differentAfrican Americans in history. Our musicteacher, who wrote a song in Hebrewand English about Martin Luther King,taught the song to everyone at theassembly.“This is a very worthwhile programthat promotes understanding betweenour two communities . . . as we seek toimprove our appreciation of our culturaland religious diversity.”<strong>Beth</strong> <strong>Tfiloh</strong> teachers, Mrs. JoyceGrand and Mrs. Sheila Lichter, were4present at the award luncheon to acceptthe award on behalf of <strong>Beth</strong> <strong>Tfiloh</strong>.Members of the 4th Grade teachingteam include Mrs. Sheila Lichter, Mrs.Robin Neumann, Mrs. Rona Zukerberg,Mrs. Shoshana Porter, Mrs. YehudisKrigsman, Mrs. Bracha Frankel, Mrs.Vered Mei-tel and Mr. Brian Singer(Music Specialist).Former NASA astronaut, Dr. Don Thomas.A visit from an astronautLast month, students in Grades 5and 6 were treated to a visit from SpaceShuttle astronaut, Don Thomas.Students were captivated by Dr.Thomas' slide presentation anddiscussion of his four space shuttlemissions, three on Columbia and one onDiscovery. In his career, Don Thomaslogged a total of 44 days in space,600 earth orbits and 20 million miles.On his last mission, he served as theInternational Space Station ProgramScientist overseeing NASA experimentsperformed on the International SpaceStation.Dr. Thomas is currently the directorof the Hackerman Academy of Mathand Science at Towson University. Hispresentation was scheduled by BTScience teacher, Mrs. Beeny Finkelstein,to coincide with the 6th grade unit onthe Universe.Mrs. Finkelstein invited Dr. Thomasto speak to students "to help them seethe value of math and science educationand how it directly impacts their choicesin life."
