PHASE LOCKED LOOP APPLICATIONSIt is essential that the resistance from each pin to ground beequal in order to maintain output waveform symmetry andto minimize frequency drift. When locking the VCO outputto the phase comparator (pins 3 to 2 for single-endedconnection), capacitive coupling should be used. If a signalexceeding 2V is to be applied, a 1 K n resistor should beplaced in series with the coupling capacitor. The base of 01 is the control voltage input to theVCO. This voltage is transferred to pin 8 where it isapplied across the external resistor R 1. This develops acurrent through R 1 which enters pin 8 and becomes thecharging current for the VCO. With the exception of thenegligible 01 base current, all the current that enterspin 8, appears at the anodes of diodes 02 and D3. When08 (controlled by the Schmitt trigger) is on, 03 is reversebiased and all the current flows through 02 to theduplicating current source 05-07, R2-R3 and appears asthe capacitor discharge current at the collector of 05.When 08 is off, the duplicating current source 05-07,R2-R3 floats and the charging current passes through 03to charge C 1.Figure 8-29The Schmitt trigger (011,012) is driven from the capacitortriangle wave form by the emitter follower Og. Oiodes06-09 prevent saturation of 011 and 012, enhancingthe switching speed.
