Interesting Facts long-eared owl Our only owl to form communal roosts. The largest roostsfound (not in <strong>Ohio</strong>) have contained over 100 birds! Long-eared owls have some <strong>of</strong> the most acute hearing amongowls; they can capture prey in total darkness.ong-eared owl When threatened, long-eared owls can compress their bodies toincredibly slim proportions, and by also raising their ear tufts,assume a striking resemblance to a broken tree limb.Tips for Finding a Long-eared OwlPerhaps the best way to locate this species is to seek out winter roosts.The easiest way to do so is to first locate good hunting grounds, suchas fields that seem to have an abundance <strong>of</strong> prey like meadow voles.If you find a site that supports plenty <strong>of</strong> avian predators like shortearedowls, Northern harriers, and rough-legged hawks, the area mayalso have long-eared owls. Once a seemingly suitable habitat is found,look for good roosting spots. Thick groves <strong>of</strong> conifers, like white pines,are ideal. Stands <strong>of</strong> pin oak may be used, as will grapevine tangles.Searching such haunts may turn up owls.When searching potential roost sites, be sure to watch the groundclosely for pellets. Long-eared owls can blend with their surroundingsso well that they can easily be missed; sometimes, a pile <strong>of</strong> pellets isthe only clue that they are overhead. Also, be wary <strong>of</strong> mistakenlyidentifying flushed long-eareds as short-eared owls. The two specieslook extremely similar in flight. The upper wings <strong>of</strong> long-earedsare grayer, the buff-colored patch near the end <strong>of</strong> the wings isless prominent, and they are more heavily streaked below.
