Infrastructure RehabilitationIn order to balance the budget some years ago, significant cuts were made from the budget allocated to maintainassets, rather than cutting back other services. This action has created a financial backlog of currently $9.8 million(down from $10.3m the previous year) which is needed to bring these assets up to a satisfactory standard for thecommunity.In addition to this backlog, significant plans are being prepared to spend funds beautifying and revitalising the manypublic areas and town centres in our City.As we couldn’t afford to do these works without cutting back other services, Council successfully gained a SpecialRate Variation in 2007/2008 of 5.11 per cent per year (which included the 2004/2005 rate increase of three per cent).This commenced on 1 July 2007.It is intended that four per cent of this Special Rate Variation (approximately $1.3 million will be used towards assetrehabilitation and upgrade works, with the other one per cent (approximately $300,000) used for continuing activityunder the Safer City Program.Rockdale City Plan | 22
